The second 305 in the fleet, i did not need this car, but as a big fan of the 305 i couldn't resist it. This is a 1986 with 108,000 miles, it may be more than the S5 but this car has been extremely well looked after, with one owner from new and an extensive service history, the car was also used regularly up to the point when i bought it.
This car was on the Isle of wight, and i went over to buy it, and drove it back home to northern ireland, almost 600 miles without any problems, it returned 34MPG overall on that journey which was better than i expected.
The automatic gearbox (quite rare to find in a 305 today) is very smooth, initially i had planned another XUD conversion for this but having drove the car i think it wouldnt be right to do anything to change its originality, so it will remain an Automatic and Petrol, as it won't be used on a daily basis fuel economy isn't a massive concern.
The bodywork for a 305 is very good, of course its 28 years old so there are bits and pieces of rust but they are generally all small bits of surface rust, the worst bit being the tailgate which leaks a bit. i am now storing it in a well ventilated shed so the rust will not get any worse but the plan is to strip the car back to the metal and give it a full respray to get rid of the rust.
The interior of the car is like new, seats have had covers on them and the upholstery has been very well preserved, the dashboard does have a bit of a region where it is delaminated but it hopefully will be easy enough to fix with the dash out of the car.
Mechanically everything seems fine, it starts up without any problem, revs smoothly and changes gear nicely, although there doesn't seem to be any kick down function, the gears can be locked in a lower setting i am not sure if kick down was simply not offered at the time this car was made, or perhaps it is currently not functioning.
The suspension at the back of the car is quite squeaky which is most likely due to worn bushes, at slow speeds it is very noticeable but once up to speed the noise disappears.

The company I worked for in the 1980s had one. It was like driving a bouncy castle full of cutlery. I'd love to have a go in one again.

That description beautifully describes them, very few modern cars actually none of them provide that experience and they are a lot worse for it. The 406 or 607 was possibly the last big Peugeot to have that big Peugeot feel

For the 28 years old car, this is very good. The engine and bodywork look's good.

Hi mate...just to let you know i changed my cam belt and water pump including new crank pulley on my citroen xsara picasso hdi which is the same engine as the 406 hdi engine that you did a video on. just a big thanks to you, as i virtualy copied your instructions and it turned out great, so a big thanks for the instructional video there are no other videos online for the 2.0 hdi engine so your the only source...many thanks....nice 305 by the way sounds and looks cracking for its age.a good find there...thanks again.....Si....U.K.

Great stuff, glad to hear it worked on the picasso, they use identical mechanicals to the 406 which makes them handy for finding parts. Is there any difference to access in the picassos engine bay? Thanks for the comment about the 305.

peugeotCitroen2CV As regards access its a little easier as mine is the 90bhp model so the ecu and a few other bits of pipework on top of the engine are located elsewhere so they dont have to be disconnected, other than that it was exactly the same. it took me about 5 hours but i took mine time watching your video step by step as i went along....Si

simon w 5 hours is good time to get all that work done, i think this 406 may have taken me 2 days although that was with the additional time required with the camera. Its good to hear the access is good on the picasso, i think they are a nice car, the interior is very airy with very comfortable big armchairs as front seats.

peugeotCitroen2CV Hi mate...as i mention that i changed my cambelt and crankshaft pully for new, i was just wondering if i could pick your brains about the crankshaft pulley, as i said it is a new one but the pulley is still vibrating alot, theres no rattling noise coming from it like the old one its just vibrating quite badly. Would you have any idea what could cause a new pulley to continue vibrating?..ive took it off twice to make sure it was seated correctly and it seems to be seated fine. The new pulley didnt come with a new bolt so i used the original one, could this have any effect on it?....cheers...si

Are you going to make the 305 your daily driver and get rid of your 406? Or keep this as a weekend and special occasion car and keep the 406? Great work so far mate :)

I still use the 406 as an everyday car, i like 406 too much to sell it. The 305s are something for occasional use, i had this green one out this week driving about as the weather was nice and dry, but i wouldnt take the 305 out in wet/cold weather, at least not before the bodywork is properly addressed. currently the red 305 is stripped back to a shell and will get either sandblasted or acid dipped to sort out the rust.

Hi mate..as i mentioned the other day that i changed my cambelt and crankshaft pulley i was jut wondering if i could pick ur brains for advice?...Even after putting a new CRANKSHAFT PULLEY ON, THE PULLEY STILL VIBRATES QUITE BADLY IT DOSENT MAKE ANY RATLLING NOISE LIKE THE OLD ONE IT JUST VIBRATES QUITE BADLY, would you have any idea what could cause this?.. I took it off twice to make sure its seated ok and it seems fine however, the new pulley didnt come with a new bolt so i used the original one, would that have any effect on it?.sorry bout the caps:-( cheers...si

How can you tell it vibrates? Is there any irregular noise being produced. Could you record a video of the car running and upload it which is the handiest way of seeing the problem from here. It may be possible that the replacement pulley is not correctly balanced but i have never seen it happen, as for the bolt I've done a few timing belts on these engines and always reused the old bolt.

peugeotCitroen2CV Hi mate thanks for the reply...aye i'll try and upload a clip and message u when its on...the pulley itself is wobbling side to side as it spools up (even tho ive checked it twice to make sure its on flush) and it makes a slight drone noise. after a bit of reading online i found that it possibly could be a crankshaft bearing? hope not tho so thought id get advice from someone who's worked on one before,like urself...Si

simon w Does the pulley wobble when its out of the car? Its possible that the replacement pulley is faulty. I suppose the other thing that could be wrong is the crankshaft bearing but I've never really done an engine rebuild on a DW10 engine, they are a strong engine, the biggest job I've had to do on one was change a fuel pump.
