Not everyone can afford a new fuel tank. A new tank for a BMW e38 7 series is around £800. The technique shown is really useful and can also be used on a plastic fuel tank. I had to do this on a 5 series where the fuel had emulsified and a combination of thick varnished petrol and rust from the sender unit had coated the insides. I used lots of nuts and bolts and agitation to loosen the coating inside the tank and it restored a plastic fuel tank which was otherwise perfectly serviceable. Great technique for those who may not be able to source a new tank for an obscure classic or on a tight budget.

Starting in 1988 when I was young and full of energy I took a car I loved apart down to the bare frame. I sandblasted it myself then epoxy primed it and repainted it. I refurbished every nut, bolt, wire, hose, pipe, component and subassembly, just EVERYTHING on that car! So when I FINALLY got through it looked like it was on the showroom floor. Better, actually because it was a labor of love and it took me right at ten years. Couple of quick questions. Why don’t you (or didn’t you) just take the wheels off? You seem to be working around them with difficulty. Secondly, we know the Rover is a field find. But with a few minutes or even an hour of a scrub brush, soap and water would have given you an almost clean work space with out cobwebs, dirt and whatnot that will cause you to take additional time to blow out lines and connections after they fact…
@janosnagyj.95403 жыл бұрын
All the time I was repeating these words: why not remove the wheels? Wouldn't it be more easy to access the places where the tubes are bent the most??? And the other is: all the dirt from the chassis is now inside of the brand new fuel lines, AFTER the filter...

The mess with the water when removing rust from tanks can be avoided if, instead of water, screws and nuts, you simply use abrasives for sandblasting or aquarium gravel. Finally, rinse the tank again with phosphoric acid and the tank is protected from rust from the inside (rust converter principle)

Once Wheeler Dealers went to the US and replaced Edd with Pants Pantstead, they had a whole team of mechanics - a head mech and at least 3 or 4 "grunts" and a fabricator, to do all the work. I seriously doubt that Pants EVER did any actual work on the vehicle, he was just the pretty face of the workshop and filmed just removing or replacing the part as the last action after the REAL mechs had done all the loosening or before any tightening. He certainly never had any dirt on his hands other then the "artfully placed" fake dirt added by the makeup dept.

The explanation about the noisy reverse gear is very clear although I think that there may be another factor in addition - diff whine. When travelling in forwards gears the crown wheel and pinion will mesh together and find a sweet spot but in reverse the end float on the pinion shaft might allow them to adopt different points of contact which are not so well bedded in.

As a chemical engineer we were taught to put loops in pipes to allow for thermal expansion and contraction. I wonder if that is why the fuel lines had those steps in them?
@subwooferbone3 жыл бұрын
Enough kinks and bends in the pipes for that not to be a problem, also they’re only a few meters long, not hundreds as they can be in a factory. My guess is that the factory bends/steps have something to do with the assembly jigs in the factory or access to bolts marrying body and frame.
@MAMDAVEM3 жыл бұрын
@@subwooferbone I think you are right, the Linear thermal expansion coefficient of Copper is only16.5 µm/(m·K) so going from -10deg C to +40 deg C with a 4m pipe would only change the linear dimension by only about 3.3 mm.
