How amazing is it to see a 36 year old Corolla with only 30K on it! It'll last another 20 years and 200,000 miles if its cared for (and parts can still be found for it.)

@@derekbartlett6142 are you still enjoying the car 11 months later? This thing is just so cool. The only thing I would do is fix the rust on that fender, by re-welding in a new patch of sheet metal. That’s it. That’s all I would do to this car. One thing I noticed throughout Zack’s video driving it was that distinctive engine noise mixed with the humming from the tires. Super distinctive and nostalgic. I know it could be A LOT CLEANER for the super low miles, but hey, it’s transportation that never fails is the goal. I have a classic same year toyota, 1986 2 tone blue Camry liftback 5 speed manual. Absolutely LOVE IT. Blue interior still looks brand new after almost 37 years and 116,000 miles.

Nah. Up there in the rust belt it'll be folded in half in a couple years, especially with the rot you can already see starting on it. Too bad. Otherwise those are good for many hundreds of thousands of miles, but the Japanese weren't quite up to snuff on their metallurgy. As quick as a Detroit Big 3 car would rust, these ones were really bad for it. I had an '86 Celica, an '88 Celica a '90 Corolla and an '86 Nissan 4x4 pickup and they all irreparably rusted by the 150k mile mark. Every one of them still ran perfect though. Wait, except the '88 Celica. That one spit the diff out onto the pavement. It wasn't anything to do with the way I drove it though, I promise.

I remember in the early nineties, our Dodge Shadow was rear-ended and thereby in the shop. My mother had a 1989 Corolla as a rental. It might as well have been a Mercedes for all we knew... it just felt so solid, well-made, easy to drive, frugal, and spunky. In comparison, the Dodge was a dog, couldn't get out of its own way, and it was a fragile piece too.

Not too many 1980s cars would be suitable as a daily driver in the 2020s, but I can totally see this 1986 Corolla standing up well to that task. And yeah, I love the way 1980s Toyotas feel when you drive them. Light and nimble. And no extra 1000 pounds of safety equipment to save us from ourselves. We will never see cars like this made again.

In middle school, my best friend's mom drove an '86 Chevy Nova (same car). It was painfully slow, but didn't seem to bother her (she had a Chevette before it). I always found Toyota's very angular interiors a little odd (squares everywhere) but it's impressive that the seat fabric and door panels look so high quality on the one you're driving. I also remember that her Nova didn't have the squeaks and rattles that my mom's Olds did.

In a family of used cars dealers, generation after generation of comparable cars, Corollas, Camrys though often not the best looking, they outlast their competitions. That's why after 10, 15 years or more the Toyotas still hold the strongest value

The first year of this body style/generation was 1984. I had a 1984. It was a great vehicle. It got me from POINT A to POINT B and back to POINT A. I also used it for my job when I was a Delivery Driver for Pizza Hut. It had a surprisingly SMOOTH RIDE for CHEAP/BARE BONES VEHICLE. The A/C blew very cold. Probably colder than the A/C in my 2007 Toyota Avalon Limited, which I still have. I would love to find another Corolla Sedan from 1984-1987 in good shape with low miles.

Mine was a blue 5 door hatchback Owned it when young in the 1990s and didn’t know anything about maintenance. It was good and reliable, got me from A to B for a couple of years. While driving one day, the car suddenly died. Turned out the timing belt broke. Fine little car. Still think about after all these years.

Memory lane for me as this was my first car. Bought from a family friend for, I think, $350. I was at least the second teenage driver and I thrashed mine, but it got me around. It may have had no power, but I crept up to 105 mph a couple of times and it cruised up I5 at 90 for a good while. They're rare now and I get a little nostalgic when I see them.

Wow, what a great time capsule! I love it, I want it! I'm such a Toyota fanboy, lol! A bit of rust, but not much for a Chicago car. I guess the 30,000 miles explains that. Must have belonged to a little old lady who drove it to church once a week. Low trunk lift over that we take for granted today, but that was a bit deal back in the 1980s, even the early 1990s. Hard to believe this car was one of the vehicles setting the benchmark back then. Toyota came a long way in 10 years, let alone 20 or 30. My 2003 Corolla looks futuristic compared to this one, haha!
