When you say "thats why everyone starts to think their fuel pump is going out. When that happens Does the FRP. Fuel rail pressure at the Schrader valve drop drastically to like almost nothing? What exactly happens to make people think that? Any help is greatly appreciated 🙏 thank you. Im working on a 89 F150 5.8L guy brought it to my home shop and told me to fix it, he wanted the complete distributor replaced, the plugs and wires. And the starter relay(Solenoid) he never asked me to diagnose it. Now he's mad cause it's not running after i did the work he wanted. I just want to get it running so he can take it and pay me cause I'm getting hungry lol. Oh also I'm working on my buddy's 94 Bronco 5.8L it will start and run strong for a bit, like 5 to 10mins if you don't press the gas. But after that time it will die off like it's choking down and then will crank and crank but won't start. For a good 5mins or so. Checked the FRP will it was choking down and also when it wouldn't start and pressure Fluctuated from 20psi to 0psi mostly stayed near zero. Then all of a sudden trying to start it, doesn't turn over but the fuel pressure gauge stutters back and forth a sec till it stops on like 10psi. Still wont start. This times needle stutters up to roughly 20psi and so on till it got up to 30psi and started. Im like 99% sure thats the fuel pump needing to be replaced but always like to get a second opinion i mean its a pain getting to that pump. Thanks again for any and all help/advice you can throw my way. I'm just like you didn't go to college for mechanic, I went to military and Iraq. Everything I knew about automobiles I learned from doing it growing up in the sticks. The. After the service working on motors was the one job I found that was satisfying. And quite a few independent shops and dealerships later, I've learned so much its like i went to school anyways. It Sucks though when people don't really listen to you because of that and you know you're right. Drives me nuts lol.

I just completed this repair on my 1987 F150. A few observations: Don't buy a replacement unit. I honestly think Ford designed this to be serviced. I also broke the bottom bolt on the protection bracket when removing. I cut off the nut and drilled out the hole and replaced the bolt with a Stainless Steel version from Lowes. Completely remove mounting bolts before disconnecting fuel lines. Connect the fuel lines before remounting. The clips are easier to wrestle out and in with a little working room. The best removal tool for the clips I have ever found is actually a walnut pick from a nut cracker set. Change the filter on the bottom of the reservoir. No ford manual notes this even exists and auto stores don't seem to sell them, it is a WIX 33268 filter available online. The reservoir casing has an O-ring in the top to seal it, the WIX filter will come with a replacement! Lastly, the lid only goes on one way. I would advise against using sealant or gasket maker. The vacuum flap inside serves as an gasket, and a visual inspection will usually tell if the its set and sealed correctly. Also, the case itself is vented, in the lid is a TINY oring and vent hole that travels from body to lid. I would imagine this is for allowing the air to move when the fuel gasket does. Using a sealant may clog this hole. With out this video, I would not have attempted this repair. Excellent information about a poorly documented Ford issue!

Yeah I tried with gasket maker and it didn’t work. I let it set over night and put it on my truck and there was no gas going through the selector valve. So I took it off and found out the orange gasket was sealed to the top, and the sealant was clogging a breather hole. So I had to remove all the sealant which was a pain. Then I put it back on without any gasket sealant and it never leaked and my truck was getting gas.

You should show that the bottom is threaded and screws of to change that filter (that no one knows about ) no mention , not even in Chilton's Ford truck book . I've used this video a couple of times. I have a tip, and if someone has already added this, I apologize for duplicating. Before you separate the top from the base, and then have to figure out the alignment pins, if you use a screwdriver or a pencil, just score a line from the top down the side of the exterior part of the selector. Then all you have to do for alignment is just re-connect the line and you're hooked back up. Really enjoy your information. I'll be performing this same process on my 89 when the weather warms up later this spring.

It wasn’t a bad job at all, but I had lots of of room because it’s not a 4x4 After watching your video I put it all together and on the first try the rear tank finally worked. The inside valve was stuck in the up position. Worked it loose like you showed. On my truck Dorman # 800-015 clip kit. Comes with 3 5/16 fuel line clips and 3 3/8 clips. I pre lubed the fittings on the reservoir and I also put the clips on first before installing the lines. Lines Snapped right on No leaks Thanks again.

Hey just wanted to give you a shout out and say thanks for taking the time to make this video. I had a fuel delivery problem on my 89 f150 and started by changing the fuel filter which did not help. Changed the external fuel pump on the frame rail and then was getting ready to take the bed off to change the internal pumps on the tanks when I saw this video. It took like 30 minutes to remove, clean and reinstall the tank selector and it solved the problem and saved me a big headache of changing out the internal pumps. I appreciate you taking the time to put create this for us DIYers!

Thanks. I have a 1990 F150 2 wheel drive with 230 k miles. I have had the fuel going to the front tank and over pressurizing the tank because when I open the fuel tank cap fuel can spew out. I am 70 and really can't get under the vehicle and work these lines etc so I am going to order the correct selector pay the big bucks and have my mechanic put it in. Then if there still is an issue will have him check the fuel pressures from the pumps and go from there. I bet this is my problem with the fuel system. It has been easier for me to simply replace things because the price of most parts are not too high. Appreciate the video. I bought the truck new 30 years ago and have replaced lot of things over the last 3 years since retiring.

Own my own shop for 40+ years. You did an excellent job. You save me a lot of time. Without a doubt the best help video I’ve seen. Thank you. Had an 89 Ford switch to a carbureted engine and put a 55 gallon auxiliary tank under my toolbox. What I understand fuel pressure from the tank side switches the valve. when I did switch it to the auxiliary tank it pump fuel into my main tank , same problem as you had. But thanks to you and this video I repaired it the same way you did and it worked fine. Again thanks for the great video saved me time. Just a little note there is a tiny O-ring that feeds the top diaphragm. I almost missed it. Without it the top would leak. I replace this little O-ring from a common O-ring kit and eliminated the need for silicone.

Nice! Thanx so much! Been driving me CRAZY for a while now lol! Been throwing parts at it however all the parts I replaced were quite old bur still had the same problems, like you did, would start up, I could even drive around a bit and then it would die. If I let it "cool" down, it would start again and I could chug home. I made sure I wouldn't drive to far... The rear tank never worked but I did replace the front tank pump and the rail pump. Finally tonight I removed the Selector, took it apart like you did and unscrewed where the filter goes, found out I had no filter and there was an extra little o ring on the bottom, one of the valves was mess up, a valve for the rear tank. I cleaned everything up, cleaned like u did with the WD40, moved the valves up and down, then cleaned the top really well since I don't have gas proof RTV right now, reinstalled, didn't install the clips as I'm just testing. Engine ran great, finally! Before it ran strange, kind of seemed like a vacuum leak at times but now it ran great until it stalled out and died. But I noticed the fuel gauge fell down which leads me to believe gas from the front tank is going to the back tank, and the tank doesn't seem to be leaking so maybe I just need a pump for the rear tank... anyway I let it cool and just fired it up again, it ran a bit then died so it seems like front tank is outta fuel and hopefully all I need is a new Selector! Pricey but then I'll be closer to getting both tanks working & I think I found a Ford oem selector on ebay for 200, just gotta make sure it's the correct one. I don't think I can repair the original Selector altho maybe I could try to block off the hoses going to the rear tank for a cheap quick fix until I get my new selector? I'll reply to my post whatever happens, this could help somebody out there like me.... Thank you! Thank You! Thank You Saul! You Rock!

Hey Saul, nice vid. I have an '86 F250 4x4. All I was doing today was changing the fuel filter on the tank selector. I have the same metal cover plate protecting the selector switch which I removed. Using just about every tool, I could not get the fuel filter threaded cup that holds the filter off. Rather than risking breaking the filter cap, I started the same procedure you just showed so i could try to remove the filter cap on the bench. My fuel line clips came out easy and the lines came off easy.......except the front tank return line that snapped the plastic nipple on the tank selector body. A real bummer. My tank selector was fine but now off to Amazon for one of the vendors selling a replacement for $176, ouch. So what turned out to be a simple filter replacement is now a costly selector replacement. I don't miss the salt and cold like you have here in the vid....I live in San Diego so my issue is the heat dries up parts and things get brittle which is what I think happened and why the nipple on the front return snapped. Keep up the good work.

Man, I can not begin to thank you enough for this wonderful video. I have been looking for this information for a while now and finally finding you has made my day, month, year. I just got a’90 from down south and it is in incredible shape, no salt and rust. I’m here in upstate NY, where rust is king. Within the first few days I had it on my driveway I’ve had two guys wanting to buy it. I have to clean up the interior, it was a farm truck, but not the main job truck. But he said that the dual tanks didn’t work, said he didn’t want to buy the selector switch. Watching your video makes me understand why he didn’t want to. I’m like you, I have always tried to fix everything myself, and being here in NY, there’s nothing but crooks and liars, to just plain lazy and stupid SOB’s So I really don’t want to go to any of them. I hear it from friends, how they get taken, and I have been too and it’s aggravated me to no end. Guys like yourself are becoming few and far between. It’s a lost art, being a shadetree mechanic, I think older cars are better than the newer ones, all the electronic bs drives me nuts. Being able to think on your feet and see what has to be done and then figuring out how, is a rare skill anymore, and you have it. Take care and keep up the great work.

Thanks for this video, though I have been working on cars and trucks for over 20 years and did go to college to become a tech, I have never done this procedure before. I noticed when I run the front tank on my 95 f150 5.0 auto, 2wheel drive, there is a big leak that not just drips but sprays and soaks the muffler. Now I have an idea what is involved in this fix. Thanks again!

Thanks for taking the time and effort to do all of this so we can do it too and hace our trucks running properly. I'm gonna put this into practice tomorrow since the one in my '86 f-150 started to leaking like crazy and the rear tank hasn't being in use for a while due to a porous line. And I'll share my experience to others as well...! Again, thank you very much!!!

Thank for posting....I'm dealing with a leak between the top lid of the selector and the selector body and I think your sealant idea will probably do the trick. I hate that they use plastic components in a high pressure fuel system, the potential for a fire is greatly increased. Gas has been squirting out for who knows how long, only noticed when I pulled the truck into the garage for maintenance. Glad I didn't burn down my house, garage, the 9 vehicles inside and everything else I own !!!

I was having the same problem on my '86. I am fortunate to have found a deal on a running donor truck with a good front tank but also bad selector valve. It took me all weekend but i was able to swap out the tanks and clean the valve, following the steps detailed in your video. I won't know for sure 'till i make a couple of trips to work but so far it appears that everything works as it should. Thanks for the video! It really was a huge help!

Thanks for the video. It has really helped cause I've been scratching my head with the weird fuel transfer problems on a used 89 F-250 that I bought a little while back. It has the same canister / valve and my gas has been just pouring out of the front tank, (cost me $30.00 to go from I.F. to Mud Lake yesterday). I too live in Idaho, up in the middle of nowhere (30 miles north of Howe) and was raised the same way, take it apart and look at it before just throwing your hands in the air and buying a new one. Lot's and lot's of scraped knuckles! Again, Thanks a bunch! Great Video.

I inherited my dads old 87 f150 in high school we had issues with the truck cutting off and the front tank not working. Ive always knew it was dilling with the fuel and I thought it was a fuel tank selector switch. Until i found this video. I appreciate it!

Thanks Jonee, You made an awsome video. I know at least some of my fuel issues are with the fuel selector. The underside of my truck was sprayed with tar and whoever just filled the area around the selector so I just kept cleaning. Five times I fiddled with it, scraping and brushing to work it all off. Now it looks like the one in the video instead of a BLOB O' TAR

Son of a! Where was this while I was troubleshooting my sffr? Thanks for this. A bonus tip for anyone dealing with this, there one fatal flaw in this reservoir, if the rear pump in the tank isn't working you won't get fuel into the reservoir, it has a pressured valve within that has to be pushed by a pump to open the path. The solution, assuming you don't want to drop the fuel tank for repair, you can grab an external pump like the front side uses and install it just behind the reservoir on a short fuel line. This creates a full fuel situation where the pump in the front and the back generate symbiotic pressure at the resevoir. I had to buy a dually like yours, for the second tank I put I just looped the gas line on the bottom channel and pinched the hose together.

Thank you for the video. I’m having similar issues with my 97 F-250. I can run off the rear tank fine but switch to the front tank and the engine stalls. I was considering replacing the fuel sending unit. I’ll pull this first. Thanks again.

Got 1989 f150 with only the back working now I have both working. Thank you for the information. I found that if you go under the night before and spray Fluid film on the clips it helps them the next day only broke 1.

My 1986 F-150 has sat for 6 months due to this issue! I will be taking it down tomorrow and I hope this is the fix I need! I thought I needed a special tool to remove the lines but you cleared that up! Thanks for this video! I will let you know how things workout! T/Y

Really helpful to see this video, Thank you! I, too replaced my high pressure pump on my 1988 F150, still low fuel pressure. Will do this next, or repair a junk yard one and swap it out. One critique, I've read elsewhere that there is supposed to be a small O-ring in the hole under the bump on the lid. sometimes they swell shut, can be opened with a 1/16 drill bit- remove it from selector valve first, of course. Regards! Terry

Hey thanks, I've got a F-350 7.3L diesel that has two tanks, not drawing off the saddle (front) tank. This gives me a place to start, even if it turns out not to be the problem. Very well done-
