This is a video showing how I rebuilt my 1988 Johnson 90HP carburetor. This is just a basic rebuild and NOT a full break down as the linkage was working very smooth.
This video shows you how long it can take to do the breakdown, clean, and reinstall.
These carburetors are pretty easy to rebuild. I used the Johnson service manual to guide me in rebuilding this carburetor. There are a few things that the manual says are not necessary to replace like some small parts on the linkage as long as the linkage moves freely or replacing the "plug/cap" if appears to look good and not loose.
I used blue Loctite for the OMC Screw Lock to make sure they do not vibrate out.
Carburetor cleaning is an important part of a rebuild and only use OEM Evinrude Johnson parts when rebuilding a Johnson carb.
Made for entertainment purposes and I take no responsibility if you attempt to do this on your own.

Great video.. very informative. Would this be the same setup for a 1983 evinrude 90hp v4?

I am wondering about the 2 silver round cap prices that come in the sub assembly kit with the gaskets. My gaskets under them seem to have some small visible gaps. What are those for? And how do you get them out to replace? I noticed you didn’t bother with them.

The caps you are referring to I believe are the Welch or core plugs. I didn’t replace mine because they were in great shape, no rust on them and they were seated very well. To get them out you have to be very careful on drilling a pilot hole being careful not to drill to deep, about 1/8”, then pry them out. If yours look bad, best to replace them. Once removed you will see small holes under the caps that will need to be poked to clean with a wire. Blow some air and carb cleaner in there, then replace the caps with a round flat punch. They will expand when tap them in place, but have to be careful doing this. Search carb Welch plugs, should be some how to videos. Drilling them out you can get shaving debris in the area that you want to keep super clean. Personally if I see they’re clean and in good shape, I will leave them alone. Some will disagree and say replace them, but if they’re good shape, I just leave them alone as you could start chasing problems if you get stuff inside or don’t seat the new caps on properly. Thanks for watching!

Great video thanks. On my carb there's a cutout by the float that says 1 3/16 which I assumed was ment as the gap for the float, however I noticed that you didn't adjust yours. Do you think it's worth doing? Thank you

First off, yes you are correct, I didn't adjust mine at that time in the video and that was by accident. I ended up opening it back up to level the float afterwards. Unfortunately YT doesn't let me fix this by adding a caption, but thank you for bringing it up. As for the float, measuring floats level to specs is good and should be done. But in saying that, for me I've always leveled the float by using the carbs body line to get the float level. Others will disagree, but I haven't had any issues in doing that way.

Can you link everything you used for lubes and cleaner
@SoCalSeaChaser
@SoCalSeaChaser 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! I don’t like adding links because usually in a year they might become unusable. But these are the parts I used: Gumout carb cleaner. (The 2nd I used was another carb cleaner spray) Johnson Evinrude OEM Carb Repair Kit 439076 with Float BRP/OMC Carburetor. Phillips head screwdriver and a pick.
