Have a 75 Evinrude that wouldn’t run in idle. Finally realized that the idle cycle ran from bottom of carb to top. It was plugged up at the main body to the point of complete obscurity. Once I found the hole in top, cleaned it up, and put it back together, it worked like a champ. Today I finished replacing the pull cord mechanism, and oiled it. This old engine ran beautifully! Love it

I just recently purchased a boat with a 20 HP Johnson Tracker. Runs good at idle and low speed has no top end power. Will not push my 16' aluminum boat over 10 mph and will not plain. I just pulled carburetor apart not knowing much about how outboard carbs work. Thing looked perfectly clean inside with one exception the high speed orifice was mostly plugged. At the time I didn't know what it was and what role it played in carbs function of carburetor. Was just crossing my fingers that it solved my problem when i take boat out in a couple weeks. After watching this video my confidence has grown that this will solve my issue. Thanks for your videos I have learned a bunch in a short time. Keep up the good work.

I can and did rebuild my carb with my eyes shut after so many times taking it apart and putting it back together only to pull up a diagram and see that orifice plug. Undid that thing and it was beyond chemical cleaning. It needed a needle to clean it. Engine runs like a champ now. Thank you sir!

Thanks a mill for your videos. I am new to the boating/outboard world and have a '78 Johnson 25hp that will start but won't stay running. I have isolated it to a fuel flow issue somewhere after the fuel pump. Most likely a clogged internal line or needle orifice. Your videos have given me the basic knowledge and confidence to pull the carb off and take care of business. Just started pulling it apart this morning after work. It is all gummy all over. Hope to have it fixed in the next couple days. Looking forward to fixing it and having this issue behind me.

@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Oh yeah - rebuilt the carb. Fired right up and kept on running. The carb rebuild definitely helped, but noted on the disassembly that one of the two nuts holding the carb on was loose, so it was sucking air, which I'm sure was the main source of the problem.

I have always tried to stay away from carbs, but these are more simple than I thought. The problem I have been fighting this last month was red gasket maker inside the plastic fuel manifold that the fuel comes out of to go to the primer solenoid and the 2 carbs on my 93 Johnson 40hp. Took me longer than it should have to figure that one out. Finally ripped every hose apart and make sure I had flow from 1 spot to the next and found that obstruction. Went through 4 fuel pumps, 2 primer bulbs and gas lines, plus several spark plugs, and cleaned the carbs over and over again, cleaned the gaskets between carbs and intake, checked reed valves, compression, spark gap checker. Was grasping at straws. Finally ready to get on the water without limping along and finally get up on plane. Thank you for your videos. They help a lot and it always is entertaining to hear Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong talk outboards 😉. Have a great week!

Me again (here in Michigan) with the 1992 15 HP Johnson. I've got a fishing story for you that you may be able to add to one of your videos or just tell to your friends and boat buddies. These old boys were out on the ocean fishing; their motor had died; it was blazing hot and they were dying of thirst. Next thing you know a bottle comes floating along; one of the guys snatches it up and said could it be? Puff! A genie pops out of the bottle and says all right fellas you got one wish; you better make it fast. The guy that picked up the bottle says okay I wish the whole ocean would turn into nothing but cold beer. Puff! Whole ocean turns into cold 🍺; genie is back in the bottle. One of the guys boat buddies exclaims, "you freaking idiot now we're going to have to pee in the boat!"

So I have. 1975 Johnson 115. It sat for awhile before I got it. It ran great in a barrel so I didn’t go through the carbs. It idles fine but on the water it did not like going above half throttle or so. Just cleaned the carbs and 3/4 ( I have two, two barrel carbs) of those little tiny jets were clogged. Think those jets could cause an issue like that?

Hey. Thanks for tuning in! Well sure, if its been sitting the high speed jets could be clogged. Once your convinced they're clean and you still have the same problem, I would recommend getting an OMC manual specific to the year/model. I appreciate the content!.. Thank you!... Was wondering, towards the end of the video when you were blowing cleaner through the brass tube back and forth to get a good spray. On my 78' 25 horse there are three holes where you have the two for the low speed. Trying to figure out where I need to spray to clear this tube. My question is do I cover all three holes and spray up the tube and if so where will it come out, where my low speed idle screw goes? And vice versa spray in low speed idle orphus and look for it to come out the bottom of the brass tube. Trying to get a good flow through that tube but it seems like it will spray one way. Any input is appreciated and if you don't get back to me in a timely manner no biggie I'll slap it back together and see what she acts. Once again thanks for the input there's always been two things I never wanted to work on #1 being a carburetor and #2 being a transmission!.. Sure aint screwing with a transmission!... 😂

After sitting down with it and actually taking a look at it good I believe I've got it sorted out now. On my carb see a hole to the left of my low idle screw that leads down to that tube so I think I got it. Much appreciated though everything else seems to be clear

Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Spray it through the ss needle hole. The needle is what controls what comes out those holes. Putting your finger over the holes is only to feel the spray coming out hitting your finger, that way you know they're clear. Once you do the puddle test and you can see each hole drain your good to go. That hole to the left is just an overflow/breather hole. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

i just bought an 87 johnson 150 v6. Lately i noticed something interesting. I can get her to 40 mpg no problem, i can be at a dead stop and punch it full throttle no problem. Once over 40 mph if i continue to push it down, my engine will bog and lose power until i throttle back and it recovers, usually around 30 mph. shes a two stroke and i took the sparks out to look at them and they are pretty dirty, but being a 2 stroke i figured as much. I dont know when the last time they were changed. I also heard it could also be a bad coil pack. I was thinking maybe dirty carb? This is my first boat and i am already learning so much! Any help or input would be helpful. Thanks so much!
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 3 ай бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in! Try this, check the "Link & Sync". Sounds like you may be going past full throttle and the butterflies in the carb are traveling to far. They should be perfectly horizontal at wide open throttle. If they're going past horizontal they will be pointing downward and restricting air/fuel mix which will cause it to bog until you recover the throttle position. On these carbs there is a roll pin on the end of the butterfly shaft, # 13 in the schematic, the roll pin is also an indicator to show the butterfly position. At full throttle the roll pins should be perfectly vertical which means the butterfly will be perfectly horizontal. Put the throttle in wide open position and check the roll pins position- adjust the link & sync. You may want to get an OMC service manual specific to your year/model. Check ebay for a good used one. It will save you time & money, it will have a great troubleshooting section too. It will show you proper procedures to set up the linkage synchronization, low speed stop screw and high speed stop screw, ect. Coils tend to break down once they heat up, I would think if thats the case you would know at all speeds not just wide open throttle, but never assume anything with these outboards. What may seem like a fuel issue can be ignition and vice versa. They tend to mimic each other. Here's the link to the schematics. www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1987&hp=150&model=J150TLCUR&manufacturer=Johnson&section=CARBURETOR

@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Its possible that these things have never been adjusted. I have become close friends with the seller. It was his brothers boat who passed. He couldn't run the boat as much as he wanted to. Now I take it out once or twice a week. I typically don't push her that hard, I like to now and then just to keep everything in strong working order. I typically only run 30-40mph which it performs perfectly on. Now that you mention the link and sync, I noticed that when in idle and in gear I do have to give it a little cause cause it seems like it wants to stall. I got me a 48 johnson and motor shakes on idle. I think carbs are dirty. I inherited this boat from family. I need to clean both carbs but I have a friend who tells me not to take them off to clean them because they are complicated and tricky to mess up when putting it back together especially the float. He says just leave them on and spray carb cleaner in them and let them work themselves out. Now I don't know what to do. Should I just spray carb cleaner in them and let them work themselves out, won't that send any gunk into the engine? Or should I try to soak them, take them apart and clean them with a new rebuild kit? I'm sure I can do it I can figure out pretty much anything just never done any carb work and have a friend telling me not to take them off let alone take them apart.

Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Yes take the carbs off! Hahaha. There's nothing to it! And there's no such thing as "work themselves out"! Haha I luv that! Best thing to do is get an OMC Manual specific to your outboard year & model. Try ebay for a good used one. That way you'll have everything, including a troubleshooting section. After a while you'll know your outboard like the back of your hand. They really aren't difficult to work on. Take pictures and/or video of everything you do then you'll have a reference in case you forget something. Start off with a good tune up. Carbs cleaned, new plugs, etc. A simple throttle linkage/timing adjustment may stop it from shaking. You'd be surprised what a new set of spark plugs will do. Don't forget to gap them! Take your time, get that manual! Your outboard will luv you for it. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

When I have my outboard running I get gas spitting out of that air Orifice? Or air bleed you might have called it hat normal? Thanks
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Yes I believe that was when I worked on that 87 70hp Johnson. I had read somewhere, that it was normal for those old motors. It's from the reed valves in a 2 stroke opening and closing. I also remember, after watching it very carefully that it only "appeared" to be coming from the air bleed when actually it was spitting out through the carb, a very tiny amount, it was like micro droplets. So it was not coming from the air bleeds. There was always a puddle of fuel in one or two of the carbs. I ended up swapping the reed valves on it and if I remember correctly it helped but didn't cure it from having the fuel puddles. I originally noticed it when looking straight at it, that made it appear to be coming from the air bleed. When I turned the motor and watched it from a side view then I could tell it was coming out the carb throat not the air bleed. Double check yours and make sure where its coming out. If it is the air bleeds you may just need to get a carb kit and rebuild. Could be worn float needle not seating or float not adjusted properly. Usually something simple like that. Thanks again & Stay Tuned !

Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Oh boy the dreaded bog/die at throttle up. I'm having the same issue with my 60 johnson. It just started, haven't had a chance to find out why yet. I was having hard start issues but a new set of plugs took care of that but still wants to stall after its warmed up. Anyway, could be 10 different reasons why. What may seem like a fuel issue could be ignition and vice versa. Do a compression test and a spark test. Don't just look at the plug firing, use a spark tool and make sure it can jump a good 1/2 inch or more. If everything looks good with ignition and timing is set properly check the fuel system. Fire it up, warm it up and put it in gear, after it stalls out pull the plugs and see if they're wet or dry. Sometimes you have to shake the plug off onto your palm or a piece of paper to see how wet it is. If its wet its getting too much fuel and fouling out, thats also a sign of a weak spark, so do the spark test! If they're dry then not getting enough fuel. Here comes the fun part. Hahaha. Fuel pump weak, fuel filter clogged, carb float not set properly at the right height or drop, vacuum/air leak somewhere, bad reed valves. I noticed on my fuel tank line, the primer bulb was running empty not holding fuel, so check that too! Unfortunately there is no one answer to this type of issue. It's a process of elimination until you find the culprit. What year/model is it? Thanks again !

Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Spraying the carb really does nothing but gets sucked into the motor and loosens up carbon that gets all over the plugs possibly fouling them out. Your best bet is to take it off and properly clean it. Go back to the basics. Give it a tune up! Get some new plugs. Check/test the fuel pump. Test for a good strong spark on all cylinders. That's where I would start. Thanks again !

@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Ай бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. I would start with the link & sync. If its not set right (slow speed timing) it's just gonna sputter out. It's crucial, you don't want more fuel before spark. These old outboards like to run where they want to run so an OMC manual isn't always to much help but it will get you in the ballpark! So there are other factors that can cause this problem and all you can do is go through it and a service manual WILL help! So what I'm saying is try and find a service manual specific to your year/model. Check Ebay for a good used manual. It will save you time & money !

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and tips. Just got a 1988 Johnson 28 SPL and I am new to outboard tech. After reading what ethanol can do to older carbs I'm a little hesitant to pull the carb off but the motor hasn't been run in years so I guess it's gotta be done. Someone else asked what you soak them in for solvent and you mentioned it was a combination of things. What are the ratio's of the solvents/gas/oil that you use. Thanks- subscribed!
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 2 жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. No real ratio, just a little of this and a little of that. But the more STP the less of the rest! It seemed to be the STP that's doing the work the rest was just filler to cover the carbs enough to soak. If I used 5 bottles of STP, probably wouldn't need the other stuff. It was something I had tried in a previous episode and I was impressed on how well the STP did. I buy a bottle every now and then for my van and one day I threw some in on a carb soak. So I tried it again and it worked! Yeah you need to clean that carb. But in reality the ethanol doesn't take a toll on these 2 strokes like it does on a 4 stroke because of the 2 stroke oil mixed in. But they do get clogged! I've seen the ethanol eat the finish off a carb bowl on a 4 stroke and they have to be replaced once that process starts, but never seen it happen on a 2 stroke. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Sounds like the upper crankshaft seal may be failing. It will usually leave a ring around the cover from being thrown off the flywheel and an oily residue on everything. Or, possibly, early stages of the exhaust gasket under the power head may be leaking. If over time it starts dying with the hood on but runs great with it off then thats the culprit. With the hood on the carbs can't get any fresh air due to exhaust gases. I would go after that crank seal first. Hope this helps! Thanks again !

@@Badwolf6466 yes pretty easy, sometimes hahaha, just be careful not to beat up the housing. you can tap a small hole in the top of the seal and screw a screw in it, then pull on the screw is one way. another way, that I like better is to use a screwdriver or small chisel and tap the top of it inward towards the crankshaft all the way around, what this does is pulls the outer edge of the seal away from the housing by imploding it. to put the new one in, gently tap it in to get it started, be sure it's in even, then you'll need something roughly the same diameter as the seal and long enough to go over the crankshaft to tap it in the rest of the way. I usually use a piece of pvc pipe, the thick stuff. the "imploding" method is best. stay away from the housing side, angle the chisel/screwdriver on the inner side of the top of the seal and tap it towards the crankshaft, don't be afraid to hit it, go all the way around until its loose. ez peezee

Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Yeah, if you go to marineengine .com you can compare the two models. Looks to me that the 93 25 and the 05 30 use the same manifold. So you dont need to swap them. I don't think the bowls are interchangeable, but might be with your models. I'm doing the same build, different years but basically the same. The "Beef it Up" series. It's almost done, just got a little sidetracked with these smaller outboards. Anyway, instead of running two primer hoses just run one to the intake nipple. On my build I also swapped the bypass cover. I see the 25 high speed orifice is a size 51D and the 05 is a 67D. Wow you should feel a bump in speed with that 67D jet. I just picked the basic models from 93 25 and from 05 30. Just to be certain you may want to check your models as to what matches and what don't. On mine I went with the 30hp bypass cover. Yours may or may not match. Check out my build if you get a chance. I'm in the middle of kind of the same thing with a 6 horse right now. The manual should help, you can get a free one at boatinfo.no. You say you cant get it to run, does that mean idle or run in gear? Is this a motor you just got or you've had? Have you tested your fuel pump? Compression good? Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Yes it probably is an easy fix. Take the carb off and clean it, get a rebuild kit and replace the needle, float & gasket, be sure the float is set properly and set the slow speed needle at 1.5 turns out, that will get it started and then you can dial it in later. Also check the primer, it may be leaking the extra fuel in. Just pinch the line off going to the carb. But don't forget to check the compression before you buy it, you don't want to end up with a 1996 9.9 anchor ! Thanks again & Stay tuned !

Hey Kyle. Thanks for tuning in. Sure, I was a first timer. I just started a 71 20hp, same motor as yours, I'll probably make it a 25. Follow along if you'd like. These things aren't that difficult. I think of them as a big weedeater with a cooling system! Hahaha, come to think of it, I've had more problems getting a weedeater to run! Check out my latest video, 71 20hp johnson build. if you do enough of em', i recommend a $40 ultrasonic cleaner with heater. Put 1/4 of the pan degreaser (oil eater or whatever) and a bottle of fuel system cleaner (i use OMC carbon guard or Yamaha ring-free) and the rest water. turn the heater on and just let em' soak for a few hours, then turn on the machine for a 15 minute cycle. gets the thing looking like jewelry! Definitely take out the core/expansion plugs if you think they are clogged. don't use those cheap Chinese kits as the gaskets just disintegrate and the brass seat isn't threaded properly. factory kits only!

What do i need to do. To get to start in. Start position. Seems like needs air. Hence butterfly has to be open
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 3 жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Well. It's hard to say as to what's going on based on your description. But I'll go with "will fire on choke" first. Assuming everything else is good, more than likely its not getting fuel through the slow speed idle circuit in the carb. With the choke closed its just pulling fuel straight from the carb bowl and may even be flooding it also. Plus, yes, it does need air to fire. Fuel, air, spark and timing. Start with the basics and clean the carb properly, put a rebuild kit in it if necessary. Set the carb slow speed needle at 1 + 1/2 turns out. Set your carb/timing cam follower linkage properly to the throttle cam so the carb butterfly is just starting to open between the two marks on the cam. Also, you should check for good strong spark at both cylinders. In neutral, turn the throttle handle to start position and start it!

Hey. Check the carb needle, sounds like its not seating and the motor is sucking to much gas. The float may need adjusted and/or its getting stuck and not closing the needle. Also check the choke solenoid and linkage, the butterfly may not be opening all the way and flooding out the motor. Double check that your getting a good strong spark. You can find a manual at boatinfo.no. It should tell how to set the float measurement. Curious to know what you find out. Thanks

@@Santy9zThat wouldn't be causing wet plugs. You say it sounds good so I'm assuming its running. Are you sure both cylinders are firing and spark is strong. I had another guy with similar issues, he put new coils in it and that cured the problem. The coils will test fine when cold but will weaken as they warm up. Are you using the correct spark plugs. May even be just a bad condenser. Try running it on one cylinder at a time like its two separate motors, that will help narrowing things down. Its a pain diagnosing these things, what may seem like a fuel issue can be ignition problems and vice versa. Then it becomes a process of eliminating each system one at a time. You can try taking the plugs out and cranking the motor, be sure and move the plug wires out of the way, if you see a heavy presence of fuel shooting out then you'll know its a fuel issue. Wet plugs are to much fuel or not enough spark, Or there is a possibility that the head gasket is leaking water, thats why the top plug is wet and looks clean. Get some STP Total Fuel System Cleaner for the carb and soak it a couple of days.
