I started collecting in 1985 at the age of 9. But 1986 Topps was the first complete set I put together. 1987 Topps was the first full wax boxes I would buy. I really can't pick which set I like best between 85 and 87...I think all 3 are my favorites. I stopped collecting in 1991 and didn't pick it back up until 2017. I never lost interest however. I think our collecting stories are very similar...and that's why I can relate to you and your channel. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Oh yeah, we bought a ton of these. I still have an autographed 1987 Topps McGwire. My brother was a big fan of McGwire. He went to a card show years ago in Atlanta Ga., Mcwire was there and signed for a small fee, he bought 2-1987 Topps, 2-1987 Donruss and 2- 8x10 photos, sometime in the late 80s to early 90s.Thanks for sharing.

1985 was the first year that I got a chance to collect. I recall getting a pack here and there of Topps, Donruss and Fleer - depending on what my mother would get at the grocery store at the time. 1986 was kind of the same as 1985 as I got packs here and there. 1987 was the first year I really got into collecting. The 1987 Topps set was the first that I put a full set together by hand with my parents so the set will always have a special spot for me. I ended up trading that set away to get Griffey Jr. cards in 1989. At some point I will sit down and open packs from 1987 Topps to put that set back together. I have some 30 or so rack packs of 1987 Topps that I never opened when I was a kid that I just found from rummaging through my childhood collection that I think I'll use as the base for putting that set together. Just a simple walk down memory lane that I think would be fun.

I Busted a couple of these Boxes open myself. Amazing how they can still be found at flea markets and thrift stores. The Last time I saw Gum included was 2007. Rack packs, and as you said the gum was wrapped individually so that the gum caused no damage to the cards. in one box there were 3 of Bonds and 3 of McGwire. I have a box of 91 Donruss (another overprinted set) the Elite Cards are the only ones worth anything.

Mr. Jabs thank you for dredging up the old memories of chasing RCs from the late 80’s! I think you should give the Topps 1991’s a shot in turn back the clock box busting. Searching for the Chipper Jones RC or a Mark Whiten Error. If you lucky enough to locate a box with the Desert Shield cards that would be Super awesome. Another great video, and I really enjoyed the look back at the Beckett’s guide from the time period. Nice job!

My uncle had the complete set of 87 topps among others. First time I ever looked at baseball cards was going through this set (in 1998 when I was 7) and it's what first got me into collecting cards. My uncle let me keep the McGwire which I still have to this day which was obviously huge to a kid in 98. I have a lot of cards from this set but I have to put the complete set together one day.

Here's my suggestion for another "Throwback Thursday". I had fun opening a couple cello boxes of 1988 Fleer Baseball that I bought on ebay a couple months ago. Perhaps that box could be opened for folks not familiar with that set. I liked the card design and honestly didn't buy any packs that year as it was hard to find in my area in the U.P. of Michigan at that time.

When my brother and Inwere younger, we would go through the cards and select a player at each of the 9 positions and we would set them up in a baseball diamond. We would then read off each statistic from every category from the most recent year. Whoever had the most “wins” for each statistical category won that position. Whoever had more position wins won. We would do that for hours! Thinking back on it, we basically invented fantasy baseball!

Great video Erik. I love these throwback Thursday videos. This set brings me back to when I was in 8th grade going into 9th grade. I bought many wax packs in 1987 and some rack packs that year. I ended up buying the complete set directly from Topps at the end of the year and still have it to this day. I'd love to see a video of bad cards that were made of players looking horrible or silly. Ed Lynch looks like he's passing gas is hilarious. Remember the 1984 Fleer Jay Johnstone card of him wearing the Budweiser umbrella hat? Silly in my opinion.
