1988 Fox Body Mustang Review & Test- Drive

This here is one clean Foxbody Mustang, and Coyote Classics is more than happy to present it for your consideration! With all the cues a Foxbody is known for, this 1988 Ford Mustang LX comes with a 5.0 Liter V8, a hatchback bodystyle, air conditioning, power steering and more. The Ford Mustang for 1988 was largely a carryover from the groundbreaking previous model year in 1987. '87 brought a fresh facelift to the Mustang, including an all-new dashboard, revised door and seat trim, and center console. This Foxbody is powered by the famous 302 C.I. Windsor V8, featuring multiport electronic fuel injection. Power from the 5.0 gets to the Ford 9" rear end through a 3-speed automatic, making this car feel as if it constantly asking its driver to go faster, to push it farther. The black paint shines beautifully over this hatchback's straight bodylines and it has been buffed to a brilliant gleam. The interior cloth bucket seats are very comfortable and befitting of a Mustang, making this Foxbody not only a great performance car but a great cruiser as well. This '88 is fitted with options such as power steering, power brakes, power windows, power mirrors, air conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, cruise control, a maplight, an updated Kenwood AM/FM/CD headunit, and a sweet-sounding dual exhaust. The Fox Body in question rides on some nice Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/T tires, accented by some stock-looking Mustang LX steel wheels that add to the '80s vibe of this Mustang. I loved my 88 5.0 LX. Bought it in 95 for 7k. It was fast, and fit me like a glove. Wrote it off when some woman in a Mercury Grand Marquis cut across both lanes and I T-boned her. I was bummed out for months. I had to be cut out of the car. Glad it didn't catch fire.....

From 1987 until the end of the Fox run in 1993, Ford produced and sold FAR more Mustang LX 5.0's in coupe, hatchback, and convertible models, than they ever did GT's, which were heavier, more expensive, and to most, did not look as good as the more simple, LX 5.0. So, the 5.0 HO was not rare in these cars. Much to the contrary. And, those 15 inch "phone dial" wheels were standard equipment on 1985-'86 Mustang GT's, and were moved down to standard equipment on LX 5.0's, when the 1987 Mustang GT debuted, with the then new 15 inch "turbine" wheels. The AOD automatic transmission was somewhat rare in these cars, as far more of them were built and sold with the Borg Warner T-5 manual transmission, which was in stark contrast to GM, who built and sold far more 700R4 automatic equipped Camaros, than they did with Borg Warner T-5 manual transmissions. GM drivers were lazy, I guess, LOL. That's why, in a straight line, 5.0 Mustang drivers with any decent skill at banging gears, ate them for lunch for so many years.

This is your best perfomance per dollar value. The LX 5.0 was actually quicker than the GT in '88. Great car! Ford got wise soon after and made the 5.0 only in the GT soon after the secret was revealed.

Not true. Ford made and sold FAR more Mustang 5.0 LX models for the entire 1987-1993 Fox run, than they ever did GT's. Where did you get this crazy notion from ?

The lx was nicer than the gt in my opinion. The gt was a little to over the top with the ground effects. They were slightly lighter also I believe

A carfax will verify miles, owners and if it’s been wrecked. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t use one for late model cars. Nice Mustang but if it’s 127k miles the price seems a bit high.

Nice Mustang!!! By the looks of it's clean condition, i would say 27K miles. Carfax it for sure. These we're the sh*t back in 80's. So many of these in around the Boston area i grew up in, hanging down the beach watching them race back and forth. Peace!
