The Redskins notched their first win of what would be a tough '88 season, surviving a scare from the scrappy underdog Steelers in what would be the only visit by Pittsburgh to Washington over the final 29 seasons played at RFK Stadium (the previous D.C. meeting being a 16-13 Redskins win over the Steelers at RFK in '68).
For the Redskins, nothing came easy as the defending Super Bowl Champions, including this nail-bitter win. The Steelers led 19-10 in the third quarter and again 29-20 in the fourth quarter but were ultimately undone by a momentum-changing turnover, a blistering Doug Williams passing attack that got red-hot late in the game, and a Redskins defense that, after surrendering two long-pass touchdowns, clamped down when it counted. In the end, after the fireworks finished and the dust settled, the difference in this high scoring melee turned out to be one bumbled snap.
It's Gibbs vs Knoll, as classic showdown of coaching legends, in this once-in-forever Steelers vs Redskins match-up at RFK.
