Sometimes to make life easier when aligning the timing chain cover at re-assembly, I have purposely omitted the installation of the crank seal until the cover has been secured. This allows me lots of play around the crank to position the timing cover. Regardless, the job you did looks good. Thanks for the video and sharing the knowledge.

I first thought my water pump gasket was leaking then realized it was the timing chain cover gasket leaking coolant. Before watching your video I was kind of intimidated since I never changed this gasket before. Your video gave me the confidence to do this job on my 1986 5.0 Mustang GT. Thank you!

I would highly recommend applying Anti-seize on each of the water pump bolts prior to re-installing them if you are fortunate to get all of the old ones out without any of them braking of do to corrosion!

the Video is a lot of help. all i wanted to do was replace my water pump but 3 bolts broke off in the timing chain cover. they were froze in the cover not the block, i had to bust it off and get a new one. 89 F-150 302/5.0. thanks for posting you video.

The book calls for 2.7 Hours + 0.4 for AC, and 0.2 with Power Steering, so a total of 3.3 Hours. It took us about half a day with shooting the video and taking breaks.

@98APCobra Yes, you want to make sure it is lined up correctly with the woodruff key. Also when impacting it on, go very slowly and carefully, the last thing you want to do is to strip out the threads inside the crankshaft, if it's not going on smoothly, stop immediately.
@APDTY11 жыл бұрын
no, you can replace just the water pump without removing the crankshaft pulley or harmonic balancer.

My 94 f150 5 liter is leaking in the exact same place. Crazy design. Having difficulty getting the timing cover off, don’t want to bend or break it. I’m going to take out all the oil pan bolts tomorrow to let it down a bit. Have a new Fel pro blue oil pan gasket I’ll try to slip in, if there is an inch of room. I guess I won’t have to use the cork corners.

@happyland221 your cylinder heads or engine block may be warped, repeated head gasket failures can be caused by a couple things, either A) The car is overheated repeatedly, or B) the head or engine block is warped due to overheating in the past

Very helpful video; thanks! I'm doing my 1996 Ford Bronco with 5.8L engine, but it's about the same. Four of the bolts that go through the water pump flanges and the timing cover and into the block twisted off just below the heads. Two of them came out with repeated rapping with a hammer and application of penetrating oil over a couple of days. I used a small pipe wrench to get hold of them, as someone else suggested; works great! The remaining two WOULD NOT loosen up despite several soaks with the penetrating oil, a good massage with an air chisel, hammering, etc. So I got out the SawZall with a metal cutting blade and sliced down through the flanges on the covers right against the sides of the bolts, stopping just short of the engine block. It was like cutting warm butter; I love my SawZall. Then I used a big screwdriver to break off the slices of flange, exposing the bolts along their whole length, right up to the block. A little spritz of penetrating oil and a bit of persuasion with the pipe wrench, and they came right out. True, I'll need a new timing cover, but after I removed the old one I found several cracks almost an inch long near two of the flanges, and one right out in the middle of the cover, so it was due anyway. Now I just hope I remember how to put it all back together! XD

And before installation of the water pump,,if it has bolts on the backside remove them and apply sealer on both sides of the gasket or it will most likely leak coolant,, I learned that by replacing mine,, it leaked like a siv ,, mine had no sealer on the gasket ,, check it first,, you will thank yourself later,,👍😊👍

Wow all the debris and whatever else from the wire wheel right into the engine. Nice.
@APDTY13 жыл бұрын
@CODxFUNxMAN Unfortunately if it's leaking, the probable cause is a pitted timing cover and the cover itself may need replacing. You can try snugging the bolts up a little bit more and hope for the best, but I hate to say it, but you may need to replace the cover itself. Good Luck

absolutley amazing haha been working on 88 gt all day to fix that gasket to fixx coolant leak in the exact same spot too bad i didnt find this video till after we had spent hours of wasted time to eventually get the cover off. i guess the seal was really tight but this is awesome and has reassured me that everything i have done according to owners manual has been exactly right too thumbs up for this :D

Thanks so much great video, I got an 86 GT that needs a water pump and while I'm at it I'll replace the timing cover gasket and Crankshaft seal.
@APDTY13 жыл бұрын
@CODxFUNxMAN yeah if it looked like a chunk missing in the cover (usually from corrosion) that is when you will need to replace the cover. The sealant I used was just a spray on gasket adhesive, you can pick it up at just about any auto parts store.
@APDTY12 жыл бұрын
@cubano1389 It's likely the front main oil seal behind the balancer that is causing your leak, that is the most common place for severe oil leaks on the 5.0 engine.
@APDTY13 жыл бұрын
@50316oscar On your car, you need a special puller, the balancer and pulley are a single piece. You can usually borrow one from a local auto-parts store that has a "Loaner Tool" program.
@APDTY12 жыл бұрын
That sounds like the distributor/TFI module on the distributor might be going bad,, that's my guess at least. When those start to fail they are heat sensitive and a heat-soak can cause them to not work until they cool down again. Heat-soak is after you turn off a hot engine, everything sits still and the heat radiates into everything and it can make components even hotter.

It took us about 3 hours to make the video, the actual time required will all depend on your level of automotive repair experience. To be safe, I would give yourself a full day to work on it. This is one of those jobs where you can run into unexpected problems that require more time.

When i did mine i had a bolt break off on the water pump, had to take everything apart and use a easy out tool. Spray bolts down with penetrating fluid and take your time removing the bolts. Broken bolts are no fun.

Hi, actually the 91 Mustang GT has a Timing Chain, and it is extremely rare for anything to go wrong with it. I would suspect something in the starting/charging system is the culprit. Most likely either the battery itself really is dead, or the starter is bad.

if you are going to do this ,there are only 2 bolts that hold in the radiator just take it out,always just get new bolts,they always rust and will be pain when they break the next time ,new bolt kit like 10bucks.also only two bolts for alternator ,just take it off,remove bolts for a c and it will lay on the passenger side of engine compartment out of the way,also just remove thermostat housing and replace thermostat ,the time spent removing and replacing all that will be saved by having so much more room to work and do the job right so you are not doing again because it still leaks

My 1994 Mustang 5.0 always has fresh oil on the front of the oilpan were the cover to oilpan seal goes, and it also has oil on the swaybar wich is right in front of it, my engine leaks oil cuz i have to add about a quart per week , could it be the front main seal or the rubber seal thats goes between the pan and the timing cover ? I need to replace my balancer because it wobbles so i might aswell replace them, it looks like they replaced the waterpump and they did not do the timing cover job.

Pull the oil pan plug and let it drain, but then, after you finish installing everything, I'd pour a couple quarts of oil into it, then drain it all out again. That would probably get all the water out.

@jamesd24824 жыл бұрын
Did you figure it out? If it's leaking coolant you need to find where. A internal leak may have coolant in the oil to check for, steamy exhaust and /or a clean spark plug in the cylinder that coolant is leaking into. Otherwise assuming fan and thermostat are good your down to pump and radiator. not much elese to these.
