This is a review of the GI Joe's Information Specialist (War Reporter) Scoop. First available in 1989 and re-released in 1990, this Hasbro action figure is best remembered from his appearances in the DiC animated 5-part mini-series "Operation Dragon Fire" as a traitor being hunted by Low-Light! Based on real-life NBC journalist Mike Leonard, who (as far as I know) doesn't have any connection with GI Joe, Hasbro or action figures.

Scoop is one of the few Joes left that I need to complete my 80's collection They have one at Heroes Comics here in London without his gun, hose or elusive mouthpiece. I almost bought him for 10 bucks which is a fair price but thanks to your thorough review Kevin, I'll hold out for a complete one.

He looks like Danny Tanner from full house, who was a news anchor on the show played by Bob Saget!

On the other end of this, in the '80s, an embedded reporter was unheard of. Today it's commonplace. Plus, if you're a "highly trained, special mission force," you want to collect as much information as possible, and control who all, and how much of it is seen. Scoop working as the Joe's PR rep to the Jugglers, Pentagon and other top brass, or at least helping Hawk edit that information and present it to them is a major role that we as kids didn't realize the team was lacking.

Great review as usual! I never had this guy as '89 was about when I stopped collecting. I regret that now as I've always had an affinity for these background supporting characters that really helped flesh out the line.... a GI Joe war correspondent. Brilliant!

Yes, I read about the change somewhere on a collector forum. I posted a photo of the original jumpsuit design on my Facebook page - he had camouflage on his arms, legs and waist.

I would actually consider him more like a War Journalist, getting in alongside the Joes to get the scoop. I'd think that the Yellow might actually help Identify him as a Journalist, and while I don't want to really date this, but I saw on Vice News here on YT some of the Ferguson Riot coverage, and the Reporter had what looked like a Bullet-proof vest on that was Labeled "Press" across the front. So instead of outright saying "Press" or "Reporter" on him anywhere, I'd think that wearing such a bright color like yellow might give warning to others that hes primarily a non-combatant, and is filming. Though to a Terrorist Group like Cobra, I don't think that'd really stop them.

You could change Scoop's function a bit by making him a spy plane/drone pilot. Put some GIJOE repro labels on that Super Saturdays Griffin Jet and I bet Scoop would probably look pretty good next to it.

Hey Kevin how long were Joe's left on the peg at retail. Seems like scoop was around in my area up to 91-92. I also wonder what month of the year series was released. Thanks keep up the great vids.

As Scoop was released in 1989 and re-released in 1990 (in what we would call today a "refresh wave") its not surprising you could still see him up into 1992. The retail structure back then wasn't the same as it is now either. Places like TRU and KMart could have old stock on the shelves for up to five years. Things changed in the late '90's to early 2000's, where these stores started to send off anything two years old to discount chains. Unfortunately finding out what month certain figures came out in depends on which stores you check (big department stores released stock early) and which part of the country you check (south west getting stock later).

formbx257 Thanks Kevin. That makes sense I remember seeing the Vamp here in Western Maryland at our Kmart right around the time the Havoc came out. Those were the days for sure.

Scoop was my favorite G.I. Joe figure as a kid. I still have mine, but it's broke, and all his accessories are gone. In fact all of my Joe's are broke thanks to those stupid rubber bands that held them together. I'd like to replace my collection if it didn't cost so much to do so.

scoop is another bad GI joe character. he's a commissioned officer. The purpose of scoop is not needed for a "top secret" special ops unit.
