I freakin love these full size station wagons especially the GM models. The very last year before they redesigned them to the more rounded body style. The wood grain model were my favorite compared to the non wood grain. These wagons have so much class even today. This particular model was heavily loaded out since it had option package #3. Great car Anthony. You are a true GM collector.

You don't see too many of them anymore. I remember in middle school, at the apartment complex we live in at the time, our neighbor had one just like that, though I don't remember if it was the Caprice or the oldsmobile or the year, but am guessing maybe late 1980s?? being that was about 20 yrs ago, but my fondest memories were watching mom struggle to see backing out of the parking lot when parked next to it, because that station wagon was enormously large, compared to her 1992 mercury sable sedan. 😁 Anyway nice find.

Cars back then had to either come with airbags or had come with those stupid automatic front seatbelts via gov mandate. Gm found a loophole around the gov mandate by putting the front seatbelts on the door. The theory was that if the seatbelt could remain buckled while at the same time allowing the driver and passenger to get in and out of the car without having to unbuckle the belts, then it was just as good as the automatic seatbelts were.

I've got a 1989 Caprice Estate in the rare (1 of 47) dark maple metallic / woodgrain. It came with the anemic Olds 307. This was removed and replaced with an Olds 403, which is a direct fit, with all accessories and wiring harnesses being in the same location. To wake up the Olds 403, heads from a 1969 Olds 350 were installed, which raised the compression ratio to about 10:1, and the complete Olds 403 build is making about 380 HP. The Caprice Estate has factory posi with 3.08 rear and can burn both tires for a block with the 403. The 307 couldn't even chirp the tires!
@davidgarris25135 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we had a Buick Electra Estate Wagon with that piece of shit Oldsmobile motor. It literally limped to Blackwell Chevrolet in Jackson Mississippi , and we traded it in for a brand new 1992 Chevrolet Caprice Wagon which was light years ahead of the Buick. That 307 was a motor that no matter how well you took care of it, it just wouldn't make it past about 150k. EVERYTHING else on the car worked great. But that motor just wouldn't make it any farther. We literally limped that car the 18 miles to the dealership at less than 35mph. One of the mechanics bought it and replaced that motor.

For anyone wondering why the seat belts are mounted on the doors in the front seating position, this was actually a Federal requirement. You see, beginning in 1990 all passenger cars for sale in the U.S. must be equipped with a passive restraint system, this criteria could be satisfied by either airbags OR automatic seat belts. In the GM models typically from about 1988 to 1993 that were not equipped with airbags, the seat belt buckles were supposed to be used only as an emergency release, and you'd open the door, slide under the belts and upon closing the door you were buckled, of course 99.9 percent of drivers and passengers treated them as manual belts. Beginning in 1995 passenger cars must have at least a drivers side airbag, and these door mounted belts (and the motorized shoulder belts common on Ford and many Japanese models particularly Toyota) were a thing of the past. In 1997 passengers cars (1998 for trucks) dual front airbags were required.

Exactly! Another hint, the Olds engines have an oil fill neck at the very top front of the engine, while the Chevrolet engines are on the valve cover, passenger side, I believe. The air conditioning compressor and the alternator are also on opposite sides on Chev. vs. Olds V8s.

It's funny how the 90's and 2000's generation of people are so longing for cars like those from the 70's and 80's! My very first car I got to drive was a 1979 Pontiac Grand Prix, going to High School in early 80's! Been driving ever since! I can say this, that Grand Prix was an amazing car! I miss that car! Sure, what I drive today, a 2015 Kia Soul, is head and shoulders above that Grand Prix in tech, build quality, and even somewhat, in styling, but that Grand Prix was bad ass, and I had many a great time with friends in that car! And it was in the 80's, before cell phones, social media, internet, and all that crap that has ruined social standards! Back then, we actually HUNG OUT together for many hours on the weekends, at malls, movie theaters, heck, even some random field in the middle of nowhere just being together as friends! I miss those days!

Kool! I wonder why it has an Olds 307, and not a Chevy 305...
@AlexanderCrump3 жыл бұрын
GM was consolidating engine production in the late '80s. At this point, sales of the B-body wagons was waning. I think the Chevy 305 was being allotted to other models like the Camaro, and it was easiest/cheapest to put the same engine in all three wagons (Chevy, Olds, and Buick). The Caprice sedan got the fuel-injected 305.

@AlexanderCrump4 жыл бұрын
Not sure. The buzzers and chimes were interchangeable across the GM line (they plugged into the fuse block on the firewall). The Ford electronic chimes sounded little different so they were probably sourced from a different manufacturer and might have had a different connector than the those used by GM. I would not be surprised if they were interchangeable, though, same as the thermal signal flashers across all GMs, Ford, and Mopars.

I've got a 1986 Chevrolet Caprice Estate with the 305 / 700R4, and neither have been apart after 530,000. The 305 actually moves this car pretty good because it has 3.23 (trailer tow) axle ratio. It is a rare Canadian version of the 305 for 1986 _without_ a computer controlled Quadrajet. It has factory E4MC instead of E4ME like on most US cars. there isn't even a simple ECM, no exhaust oxygen sensor etc. it is a rare enough oddity, I have hung onto it, even though it is very worn out, and the paint and woodgrain have essentially faded off. The A pillars / windshield have been leaking water into the area behind the dashboard, and under the carpet, and this would need a lot of work. The frame, rear floor, footwell, and spare tire well behind the right rear wheel are still in great condition.

Fuel injection on the 307 would have fixed most of the performance gremlins. Dual exhaust would have been good for another 10 ponies. Overall, the Chevy EFI 305 was a better performer, with much better throttle response which IMHO makes a car feel powerful.
