1990 Dodge Ram 250 Van, washed and fix high idle

Had a problem out of the van's automatic idle speed control module. Took it off and fixed it, it worked for a while but then messed up again. I eventually ended up having to pony up the the 75 dollars or so for a new one. It was worth it.

In the older carburated vans, there was a fast idle screw on the idle cam and electric choke. If you didn't warm them up enough the engine would stall and die. When I got the 88' I was glad this problem was solved by this little device.

I feel your pain lol, I have an '87 b150 and a '77 w100 both with 2 barrel 318s and I've had to fiddle with the choke and high idle on them both

Yeah that thing was really easy to work and the parts for it were cheap for the most part too. I remember buying calipers for it for like 13 dollars a piece or so haha.

idle air control motor, prone to that, you are lucky to have fixed that, usually throws trouble code and shows out of tolerance, i have had one for fifteen years, and every now and then,, it does that

Can that part being faulty cause a crank, no start as well?

I don't know for a 100 percent fact that it would but I imagine that it could. At one point I had adjusted mine so it wouldn't idle high but then it wouldn't idle period without giving it some throttle input. However it would still start with a tiny bit of throttle.

I have a 1990 D150 , 5.2 318 , about 93k , power train and drive train have been well maintained and feel healthy for the most part . Aside from 0-25mph (normal acceleration) it wants to somewhat stutter and shake (unless given hard gas) ..... and about 50-55mph (overdrive on) bucking back and forth between drive and overdrive . But if I have overdrive off at about 50-55mph its perfectly fine ... just does not like an easy acceleration .. but runs great at idle or on a pull .. read a forum where a guy had this same problem but a new distributor fixed his ?!?! I dont want to pull the dizzy and set the timing so I'm going to try a few things. Just putting some of my problem info out into the world lol

It could be! Sounds like when it's out of OD it's winding high enough to smooth out and have the power to pull itself. Of course I'm not certain on any of that, but it could very well be.

@@CrazyWoody1989 Yeah thats kind of what it's doing , although in overdrive with a decent pull , high enough wind it will get up and throw into that higher gear . It's just at annoying times (keeping speed, passing) u know the drill ill keep ya posted on whatsup

My info yeah I lubed them up before I put it back together, I can't remember exactly what I used though. Mine had a few plastic chunks in it haha

Hi Stuart, I have the same van but 88´ I cant pin point the problem but seeing this video makes me think it might be the same component. My van will start and run fine but once i take it around the block and come to a stop it simply dies and maybe after the 3rd time it wont want to start back up. Any ideas if it may be the idle control. Ive took it to the mechanic and they cant figure it out. Id hate to sell the Van for this reason

Jose Porcayo It could very well be the same part going bad. The next best thing I can think of that could be a problem would be fuel system related. Like it has a pump relay going bad or the filter is stopped up or something.

It is the Idle Stop Solenoid

I know this is an old post, but another culprit could be the fuel pressure regulator in that scenario.

That idle speed solenoid is not coming up at autozone. What year and model did you search as well as part name

it's the automatic shut down relay it's also called ASD relay it suppies power to ignition coil ,power to injectors,& fuel pump for a period of 3. seconds key on engine off and needs a crank signal from distributor to stay on when it's running it stays on continually of course

+Andre Grier There is a bolt that sticks out of the automatic idle speed controller that also acts as a stopper for the bracket on the side of the throttle body, you can screw it in or out and it will adjust it some.

+Andre Grier It may just need a new idle speed motor on it. Mine idled way high, but if that thing is shot, it could cause it to do all sorts of stuff, especially if it is an electrical component that is worn out; where as mine had the gears stripped out inside.

+Andre Grier At one point I had actually tried to just unhook that controller and at that point it wanted to sputter out and die. It wouldn't idle at all, I had to constantly rev the motor a little bit to keep it running. If the contact points are corroded or something it could be causing it to not get a good connection. If I still had that van where I could play around with it some I could help you out a lot better haha

this is the procedure to adjust isc motor, engine warmed up shut eng off this will make actuator fully extend, disconnect coolant temp sensor disconnect isc motor cnnector have a tachometer installed start eng and adjust rpm to 2750 2850 shut eng off reconnect coolant temp sensor and isc motor now you are done note this is for a properly working isc motor

Lol nope! When I made this video the van wasn't exactly road ready yet, I ended up putting some used but better tires on it. When I sold it it had yet another used, but alright tires on it lol

hello i had Knee surgery so i couldnt do a simple repair on my i have a 1991 dodge 318 that operated smooth. But every time it rained after the fact the engine wouldnt start, So i had to place a hair dryer on the cap for 40 minutes,,,then it would start. So i had the Truck inspected up here in massachusetts by the RMV1 DOT Station passed with flying colors. Then i figured i bring it to the Dodge dealership service station. They said it take 1 hour to fix it be $129.00. i said ok . The young Service tech brought it in took off the plug wires and Cap then i notice he was laying flat on top of the motor to replace the cap and wires ? 3 hours went by. I ask the service Clerk Whats going on. He Said the service Tech didnt know how to set up the cap and Firing Order ? I SAID WHAT ? I said i going out to the garage to see what the hel is going on. i limped out there said whats up he said the engine doesnt fire up. i looked into the hood viewed the Cap it was backward told to remove it place it on right. HE RIPPED OUT THE PLUG WIRES PISSED OFF Then tried to step on the gas pedal I screamed Dont do that its fuel injection just turn the Key Jack ass'',,The engine fire Chugging miss firing The tech said i am done not working on this shit box no more. The service said its $99. DOLLARS I GOT IN MY 91 DODGE TRUCK it didnt even make it up to the gas station. I called dodge they come back. i slowly drove back. The tech said not working on it. I Had to bring it to another old timer that knew Dodges like me He said TheJack ass did something to my 1991 dodge d150 to disable the idle is chuggung and the performace surgers up and down. Never done that before. I ve had my 1991 truck since New.

He probably unhooked the idle control motor, or he adjusted the screw all the way in to where it doesn't make contact with the throttle linkage. I did the same thing to mine so I could drive it to the parts store to get a new one. But that is ridiculous and I hate that for you; it's insane to me that a dealer technician couldn't do a task as simple as replacing plugs/wires/cap

Also if it wouldn't start after raining, I wonder if it could be that water is running down under the cowl onto the distributor cap and getting it wet inside or something
