The 90's were a peak for cars in the U.S...you get the reliability and fuel efficiency of fuel injection over carburetion, yet the rest of the car had simple gauges and an uncluttered look. Plus, if you got a modest inline 4-banger SOHC with a manual transmission from that era, you can afford to keep it going and going even 25 or 30 years after they were produced with regular maintenance.

My 91 Accord is a 4 speed auto but it has only 55k original miles and aside from swapping out the timing belt every 50k or so I will make this thing last

Oof I think the 90s were the worst decade for cars in history. Not including this car as this was pretty early. But so many 90s cars aged very poorly style wise. Are very bubbly and full of cheap interiors. Even luxury cars from the era just look awful the materials all looks so cheap. I can't imagine a day where people will commonly look back at 90s cats and think of them as cool as we do with 70s and before. Most of them have aged very very poorly.

My sister bought a DX 4-door 5-speed in 1991. She drove it for two years and traded up to a '93 EX. My dad bought the '91 and he and my step-mom drove it well past 300k miles. Great cars!

Hi Zach, I worked for a Honda dealership, when these cars were brand new. First: The DX trim level designation was the least expensive model of the Accord or Civic line. This trim level of accord didn’t come with factory A/C. That was an accessory that was dealer installed, at the time. What you refer to as automatic seatbelts were known as ‘passive restraints’. The auto manufacturers of the time were attempting to get folks to wear seatbelts. It worked, for the most part. These were eliminated with the addition of drivers and passenger airbags because having both would have been very expensive. The one thing that you kept saying was simplicity. Honda’s big ad campaign was “We make it simple”. At the time, Honda only had three models. The Accord. The Civic. The Prelude. Very simple. Love the channel and your passion for cars.

you didn't mention it, but there is an uncommon station wagon model for the 1990-1993 accords! called the cb9 by the accord community, they look so retro with the boxy front and the fat bubble back. I own a 1992 wagon accord with the 5 speed manual and everything else you said here is so true. It is so bare bones and functional that you feel everything -- the road, your shifts, the engine response, your comfy seating position. My car has a blue interior that is a lot less faded than the car featured in this video so it looks way more 90's dated and my passengers love the style. It is so cool to see a review for these accords because they rarely show up on youtube!

Programmed fuel injection 1990 lx, my grandma bought it in 1992 with 13k miles and then eventually gave it to my mom who took great care of it and finally wanted to buy a new car, so she gave it to me and we still have it, it runs great, needs some work little rust, trunk leaks, but I can't get rid of it for sentimental reasons

I had a 92 accord, I bought it at 115k miles and sold it at 305k miles. I didn't want to sell it, but sadly I needed the money at the time. I had it for 12 years. No major problems, just oil changes, filter changes, and timing belt.

I had a 91 LX in seattle silver - maroon interior. ha! This was a very reliable car. One thing to note, you had to put on the lap belt manually. If you didn't, the automatic top belt would kill you in a serious accident. I also had a Motorola bag phone permanently mounted with a rear window antenna for my phone. Good times!

After the cb7 review I found this channel... I still have my 93 cb7 how ever with a 95 prelude motor... And no it's not an H on purpose... It is a dual cam but it's an F22b non v and its being restored... It makes like barely 200 to the wheels... It will light up 3rd though... Great review my friend... Cb7 owners are a little weird...lol

0:53 Hi there! Fellow CB9 Wagon owner here! Just wanted to add a note that if you got the SE Coupe or EX Wagon, you could've gotten the 140hp F22A6. Alternatively if you bought a automatic EX CB in 1990-91 you got a four-speed with a "sports mode" button. Basically it just lengthens time between each shift. My wagon is unfortunately an LX automatic from '92 so no A6 and no Sports Mode. I'm currently in the process of doing a manual trans and A6 swap from an EX Wagon. With any luck maybe I can get the sunroof too!

I'm sure you'd like to hear that sports mode was actually built into the post-facelift CBs! I have an auto '93 EX and at a certain point of throttle it engages, and at WOT the butterflies open and I get an rpm jump of almost 3k! Too bad you don't have an EX, the intake really makes the car fun!

Some of the Rovers did have honda engines and styling unfortunately the electronics/ wiring were not held to honda quality and the cars had issues.

I still have a 93 SE model that looks almost new (one tiny door dent in the back). Unfortunately these models, while they were modernized with dual airbags, came only as automatic. I figure if the transmission goes out I can buy another one with a manual and do a conversion. But it is 33 years old and still all original, I see newer ones from the 2k era that haven't aged as well.

Growing up in the 90s one of the neighbors had the SE and it was so fancy w the leather seats. I loved the low cowl and big side windows in the accord. We had a Camry and the accord felt sportier in comparison.

I love mine. I got a 1990 4d accord Ex with the a4. White with the spoiler. got the sunroof+cruse control. I agree with everything you said. The new cars are nice but they have to much stuff on them. Id rather have a down to earth drivers car. I have no abs, traction control, Stability control or air bags. I have had a lot of cars and i just find i enjoy the 90s cars better then pretty much anything else. other then my 2001 2d honda accord ex but that model came out in 98 so does that count as a 90s car still? I wish I still have my 01 and didnt sell it for a 2015 2d civic si completely regret doing it. sold the 2015 for a 2018 civic si lease but let it go back. ended up getting this 90s accord put quite a bit of work into it but it has cost really not much at all to get it running very well. also tons of forms for the cb7 and parts. Thanks for making this review. I sure do love seeing old hondas driving around. now only if i could find another 2 door accord that is in good condition id be set.

@@gregorsamsa1364 Airbags are nice for a daily driver car. Reading back i should have put that this isnt my daily car i have a toyota tundra for that. I actually gutted the interior out of the back of the car and am building it into more of a simi track fun car. I am just slowly building it up and prefer not having all the stuff for a fun car but it is a bit of a screaming metal death trap by todays terms. daily driving is always going to much safer in newer cars. I believe that the 92+ cb7 did come with airbags though. The 90 and 91 only had the sliding seat belts but still older cars just don’t have the safety all around that new cars do but that is also why a new civic is around 2900lbs and this 90s accord is around 2800lbs the new accord with the 2.0t is around 3300lbs. So about 500lbs more then this old accord.

My brother had a 1990 Honda Accord EXR... it was the normal not retarded auto seatbelts. The only car I saw in my life with those auto belts was an old Nissan Quest.

nice review. new accords are fun though, just not in the same way. i love the cb7, but i think you’re nostalgia is biasing you a bit. the new 2.0l turbo is a great engine that takes well to tuning, and sport trim comes with 6 speed manual. the aesthetics of the design is debatable but looks great lowered with wheels and tires. i agree its a much different accord, but can’t expect them to make the same car generation after generation. ✌🏾

92/93 ex is the one you want. Electric locks windows 5 speed. F22a6 (better cam and intake manifold from the a4) cruise control and a low spoiler on the trunk

Criteria BEFORE - Durability/Reliability/Ease of maintenance/Economy and cheap parts availability (Qualities for long term ownership and with DIY in mind) Criteria TODAY (More shallow to old school drivers) - Infotainment/Warranty/Fixed servicing costs/Automated conveniences/ automated safety (Little long term ownership or DIY in mind). In short the definition of Better has been transformed by manufacturers However if you were to judge based on criteria before (staying operational for life) it would be the 90 Accord > Newer cars However if you were to judge based on current criteria (gadgets and convenience) it would not be the 90 Accord BUT if the government really cared for the environment they would support retro fits/ right to repair laws and we could have the gadgets on these older accords giving the best of both worlds. There are retro fitting of ABS/Hybrid motors and even Full Electric conversions but without much if any assistance from the Government.

Hmm I might disagree with you on this. As the US automobile fleet is the oldest it had ever been in history. So I would say car makers have made it somewhat easier to keep their products on the road.

I own a 91 Accord LX 4 speed auto with 55k original miles. New Honda approved transmission fluid, coolant, serpentine belt, alternator, starter, valve cover gasket, distributor, water pump, timing belt, NGK spark plugs, spark plug wires, battery, Torex full length exhaust, an all aluminum performance radiator (no plastic side tanks), thermostat. And this thing is ready to go another 30 years (change the timing belt every 75k) Could use a new interior and paint but this baby is rust free at 30 years old.

Small yes, light yes, connected no. The car was very numb. It had the motions of driving manual but not the feelings. I would look into the corolla hatch (which I have a review of) which feels a lot better.

The 2.2 I4 was one of the most reliable engines ever made. If you had two of them blow up on you either you didn’t maintain them correctly or it’s one of the biggest coincidences I’ve ever heard

One more thing, that automatic antenna was trash. I went through three of the before I gave up. They were not very durable and certainly were not tested for ice - even light ice in the south.
