I got an 89 Civic DX in August 1989 and loved the hell out of it. Drove it until 2003, when I got tired of fixing it, and then for at least 10 more years I saw two or three more owners in town driving it around. I could always recognize it because it had a (ridiculous, dealer-installed) black *luggage rack* and "spoiler" on top of the trunk. I insisted the dealers not charge me for that garbage. Also, regarding the factory-installed radio/tape deck: I had them get rid of that, since in 1989, the factory-installed sound systems were usually pitiful, so it was common to save money at the dealer's on the base price, then go to Silo or wherever and buy a sweet Blaupunkt (or Jensen, JVC, Alpine, Pioneer, etc.) system instead. And have a friend install it. Finally, regarding the cup holder: first, you could buy cheap little hooky gizmos that slipped into the slit for the window, and those sufficed for common fast-food cups or soda cans, though don't slam the door too hard. Second, I found I could easily wedge my coffee travel mug or whatever between the parking brake and the seat, and it stayed put. I had my 89 Civic in Phoenix (hot-hot-hot!) and in Montana (with an engine block heater!), and it did great, though it lacked oomph in the mountains, especially with a/c running. It was a great car, and I would have bought another one just like it if they were available. I enjoyed it more than the 2003 Civic that replaced it. THAT car finally died last year at 280,000+ miles. Now I'm on to my third Civic, a 2023. Very happy.

I used too see this Generation Civic everywhere on the road in the late 80's through out the early 2000's the Y2K era. The 80's & 90's cars were made better. The quality, the body styling. Everything lasted longer, they didn't have a bunch of useless technology garbage.

I owned this exact car, but in blue, in about 2004, for an upstate NY Winter rat. It is still one of my favorite little cars. At this point, I’ve owned 43 vehicles, from a Maserati all the way to a Geo. This little “go-kart with AC” as I used to call it, was a champ. You knew it’d start every time, you’d get great gas mileage, and if you didn’t take yourself too seriously, you could have a lot of fun. So glad you did this video, thanks for the memory flashback!

My first Honda was a charcoal grey '91 Civic DX with automatic. I loved it, and am now on my third Honda. I bought cup holders that fit into the windows. After 11 years, I gave the '91 to my nieces, who drove it for 3 years.

Had a 1990 Civic Sedan Ex, had power windows and locks, light blue exterior (badly faded) and interior. Powered by a B20Z2 out of a ~2000 CRV and an early 90's Integra GSR 5 speed. Was fun, different looking, and cheap to operate. To date it is the only car I truly regret selling.

I just found a 90 DX. For $1000.00.Well taken care of. All original with 108k original miles with maintenance records and owners manual. It died on the original owner. I got it home, did some investigating, and the screw backed out of the distributor rotor button. I simply put it back together, and the car runs perfectly now. Nice little car. Thanks for reassuring the reliability. I think I'll keep it.😊

Zack if you love the EF line of civics, you absolutely must drive a 1990-1993 DA or DB Integra. I think you will also be quite impressed with them as well, as they are the cars that brought B series, vtec, and Formula 1 engineering to the American masses.

I had the 89 Civic LX in Grey with the power windows mirrors and a 89 CRX-SI. They were fun cars when I was in my early 30s in San Diego very zippy. Now they seem way too small or I have gotten bigger,,,nah I think they shrunk the cars! 😂 I had the LX the longest to 2003 and 319K miles. CRX far shorter it was stolen twice ! I was told at time of purchase that the Honda 1000,2000,3000 factory radios were made by Alpine I didn't believe that later found out it was true until 91 when Clarion replaced Alpine as Hondas factory radios. Result I bought a Panasonic Head unit with anti theft that cost as much as the Honda/Alpine 2000 🤕 A note on the keys I had two the LX had a locking fuel door and trunk release on the floor left of Driver seat so you got a valet key that wouldn't work there. I agree on the look I think the 88-91 Civic Sedans had the best styling of the era. I just wish I had bought the 90 EX when that came out it had the 105hp SI engine vs the 92hp 1.5 my car had.

I had a 1991 black sedan 1.5l gli automatic and it's one of the few cars I miss. It was very slow but otherwise very fun to drive when I was a teenager because you could throw handbrake turns even on dry asphalt without feeling like it would tip over and in winter it was even more fun.

Thank you for the review of the 1991 Civic DX. I bought a 5-speed one used in 1993 and drove it 250,000+ miles before it succumbed to Hurricane Katerina in 2005. I loved that car and missed it so much that I bought a replacement one at the end of last year (2022) and had it shipped to me. It has a 5-speed manual, and is white like the one you demonstrated. And it has only 210,000 miles on the odometer. Greatest little car ever made! I am restoring to as close to “new condition” one can make a 32-year old car.

I know it’s a little bit before your time, but let me tell you that in the United States in the early 90s four-speed automatic was not the norm for compact cars. The Dodge Colt and Chevy Cavalier were only available in 3 speed. Even the Hyundai Excel and Toyota Corolla still offered 3 speed even though 4 speed was available at the time. Ford and Honda did have 4 speed boxes as standard but I remember growing up in Australia where there seemed to be a lag in four speed take up. The Neon was directly exported to Australia in the mid 90s and junked by the press for a three speed auto in 1996.
