Monteverdi was the last winner Winston "Chronicle" Wilson rode before his death in 1991. Monteverdi rounded off Chronicle's triple after a stirring stretch duel with Calypso Music (Fanna) from the Philip Feanny barn. Monteverdi sported the silks of Mayer Matalon and Pat Rousseau and was conditioned by Jose Pinchin. Another winning machine for that owner/trainer combination was Nankipoo, who won from 5F round to 10 furlongs. Nankipoo (Bartley) beat Mastermind in a Saturday opener during that era, going 10 furlongs. Interstingly, Chronicle won aboard Nankipoo, too, going 7 1/2 furlongs when he produced a terrific burst of speed to catch tearaway leader Shadow Zone one Saturday afternoon. Oh boy!!! Memories!!! Memories!!!! Memories!!!😊

@pelorusjack5461, yes indeed. The good old days. When would say was the peak of JA racing? Some say, late 1970s - late 90s, others mid 70s to late 80s, followed by a brief lull in late 80s, which ushered in the claiming system in the early 90s, leading to a short term rebounding in the 90s, but longterm decline starting in the early 2000s.

@duenpagon1896 Legal Light and Harlequin were household names, plus the Bimbo and Fanna rivalry took racing to another level in the late seventies to early eighties... that era was the grandest time in racing.

@@pelorusjack5461 Agreed. The casual racing fans all knew of Legal Light, Harlequin and later Royal Dad. Bimbo & Fanna, the riders with the biggest fan clubs of all-time in JA racing plus RJR & JBC coverage was taken up a notch by the efforts of people like Ed Barnes. Not to mention game changing commentary by Chris Armand.

@duenpagon1896 Yes, Royal Dad later became one of the immortals. Chris Armond definitely did a lot to take it where it needed to be, too.

Who remember Wayne Sinclair, Parnell Linton, Emanuel Satal, Dave Jackson, Omeal Lee, Des Smith, Glen Jones, Hubert Anderson, Rod Dacosta …and I could go on..these riders were on the cusp of greatness, but for one reason or another their career at the park never materialized to that level. Plus the two Panamanians in the early 90’s Jorge abrego and Jorge campines…memories plus memories.. special mention to Howard McKenzie a great trainer of the 70s and 80s .Still hoping to see 1984 st. Ledger my apology( Bartley )vs O.B. Kanobi ( bimbo) …Rohan nuff respect

Some other notable names were Ian Spence, James Douthall, Michael Redwood, Everton Stone, Huntley Johnson, A. Bisasor, Alton Andrade, Carlos Gillespie & Jose Ramos to name a few. Jamaica definitely has a rich racing heritage that should be preserved. Hoping the current “promoters” can turn things around & take it to new heights.

@@paggyD2024 but jamaican jockeys beat them horses too wildly and that make the horse go off stride plus them need to learn to balance more properly. When the jockey moving in unison with the horse he get more out of the horse than when him set sideways like him a drop off and a kill the horse wid whipping. That is why when some of them go to foreign they can only become exercise riders because trainers don't trust them pon them horse in the afternoon. Because you see Spanish jockeys, them ride like that was what they were born to do, always a pleasure to watch. Jamaica produces good jockeys but not many. Them only good locally.

@@st.patrickreid8968 No disagreement, except that excessive use of whip is not limited to JA jockeys, but a worldwide issue which have led to the rule changes over time. Changes have included the refinement of the whip design to include "shock absorbing characteristics" with a compression factor of at least six millimetres. Then it was increased vigilance by stewards to ensure that the whip be used for safety, correction and encouragement only. More recently, the limitation of the number of strikes throughout a race and up the straight.
