Most arcade games have a difficulty ranking system that causes enemies to be more aggressive the more you are powered up, and the longer you are alive. Foregoing powerups causes the ramping to progress slower -- or in some games, never move to high gear.

@@interesting_outputThat may be so back in the day, but games got wise to this, and forced you to power yourself up, or get left behind as the remaining bosses got stronger. Last thing you needed was to need 100 hits to take out a boss while he took an under-leveled you out in just one hit. (But do you regret not getting the swords earlier?)

Defeat the boss, and the background starts exploding because reasons. Yep that's an Irem game.

He avenged his late Princess, and made sure their enemies were dealt with finally. Then he left to mourn in peace.
