The teams did well in such a short period to get the VN somewhat competitive. If the VN had come to scene a year earlier I think I could've really stirred the pot with some development time. Look at the VL Walkinshaw, after it's release in 1988 and it only got quicker and quicker each time a top team ran them.

@@TouringCarsofAus No rev limit in '91.. The Perkins/Mezera car had a random misfire issue, then dropped a valve. What happened after '84 Bathurst? Group A...Nus killed it. Many motors ago I had a VK with a LV2, valve bounce was strong in that one, no fun without the B cast heads. Dodgy ign module, fuel pump relay and that plug on the sender unit, had fun with the thermal paste, adding a Skyline external JECS fuel pump(high pressure), binned OE relay, manual relay to a toggle switch. Sent it, the float valve held for a few days on the DIY Rochester Quad fuel injection, long enough for the LV2 to liberate itself from its mounts. Those Opelfeit M21's are not meant for V8's that talk, they're not Muncies. I upgraded, Mopar.. They probably replaced it with solid links, but the R32 also had the HICAS 4 wheel steering system which made it sound even more imposing when the Bathurst commentators described it as the ''600hp, twin turbo, 4 wheel drive, 4 wheel steer Skyline GTR'' It certainly stuck in my mind..
@TouringCarsofAus3 жыл бұрын
In reality the 4 wheel steer was removed as the car was more prone to crab walking. In 1990 when they mentioned it, it was largely for marketing purposes 🙂

If Godzilla hadnt come along and crushed all comers, would Group A have continued?
@TouringCarsofAus3 жыл бұрын
To be completely honest, highly unlikely. The Sierra RS500 basically started the slow decline of Group A due to the fact you had to have one to even have a chance of running at the front of the field for the most part, especially in Australia. The GT-R essentially added the final nail to coffin. I think the large investment by manufacturers and the fact that if you wanted to improve the existing model, you had to develop than produce 500 to be sold to public so in the end, the rules of Group A itself caused it's demise. That's just my opinion however, it is still and always will be a fantastic era of motorsport in Australia nonetheless :)
@richardcunningham55403 жыл бұрын
@@TouringCarsofAus i suppose what i didnt say... was that Group C, then Group A, after all these years, were in my view 100x better than the V8, two-make shite we have suffered ever since. Diversity of mostly relatable road going cars was incredble, Sierra RS500 aside, which we never saw in a showroom.
@TouringCarsofAus3 жыл бұрын
@@richardcunningham5540 Agreed! Although Group C had quite a large bias to the Commodore it was still great to watch with the XD/XE Falcon's, RX7 and eventually the BMW 635 and Nissan Bluebird Turbo. I have to admit, the first season of the 5L tourers was awesome because we still had the E30 M3s, albeit severely handicapped so they couldn't beat the V8s, especially at Winton or Lakeside where there times were slower than Tony Longhursts 1992 laps. After that, it's for the most part one sided. Group A was like this but had years like 1986, 1987, 1990 and 1992 where there were multiple winners in different makes and models. I completely agree, the current formula Australia is running is severely outdated and the cars are completely irrelevant to me in my honest opinion. I generally stick to watching the historic races, TCR, TCM and S5000.
@Hapkido82AUS3 жыл бұрын
No Group A was going anyway. Manufacturers hated building homologation specials. Also, the GTR was doing well here, but globally, the E30 M3 won the most races in Group A.
@nnoddy81612 жыл бұрын
I think Group A and Group B produced some of the best road going cars in history. The early years of Group A were great - BMW 635Csi, Volvo 240T, Commodore, Rover Vitesse, Jag XJS, Toyota Supra and Alfa. Post '87, the rise of the E30 M3, RS500 and ultimately the GTR meant the days were numbered. The cost of producing these examples became too much, even for Ford, Nissan and BMW. Always wondered how the E30 M3 would have performed with a turbo bolted to the S14 (bearing in mind BMW's expertise with F1 turbo using the same engine block).

Not really.. the VN Group As looked impressive on paper with more power and a 6 speed Hollinger which was the only other car in the field to have 6 gears aside from the GTR but were still bigger and had shit aero compared to the VL Walky of the previous 3 years.. around 8km/h quicker down conrod on average but good luck avoiding lockups or getting the same mid corner speed and grip that the VLs had over a 30 or so lap stint.. having less downforce will nearly always have those drawbacks.. why do you think larry went back to a VL the following year in 92? They could actually hold the road alot better.. Now if the VNs had more aero, or if the VL Walkys had the 6sp Hollinger - THAT would have brought some very different results for Holden at bathurst and even the ATCC
@TouringCarsofAus3 жыл бұрын
100% Agree. Sadly Holden designed the aero kit of the VN to be a lot more subtle as many complained of the VLs over the top styling as a road car. In turn it could keep pace with the Sierra but lost out in corners.
