Awesome car. I remember from the '90s that those Eagle Talons were killers at the Philly street races and on the highway.

Gorgeous. That Talon is still my favorite character in the show. 'Nice to see it back in action after the drive-train issue. No doubt the poor beast will get broken again, since it's often the "Oooh, let's try this" subject in the group, but in many ways that's what I like about it. A restored classic car like the Grand National is a joy to behold, so it's great that you keep them close to the original stock form. In the case of DSM's however, much of the reason that they became so popular in the first place so many people tried to juice them up. In that light, one could argue that the only way to keep a DSM in true "classic" condition is to never stop modifying it.
@TomsTurboGarage
@TomsTurboGarage 10 жыл бұрын
Very well said William! First off, you're point about DSMs in their "classic" condition is a very interesting one. Almost reminds me of how post WWII hot rods are today. The period correct modified versions are as important as bone stock 1932s of the day. Also your observation of the cars in my videos as characters is very interesting! I really love that perspective and it's changed how I think about my videos. Thank you for the unique observation!

Hey Tom! Just wanted to let you know I enjoy your videos and the passion you have for DSMs! It's a lot of fun to see someone putting out knowledgeable, informative, and detailed videos about this stuff. I have a 2g GST that I have driven through high school and college. This summer, with help from a parts car, we converted it to what I call the GST-X. Naturally, your videos have me dreaming up all kinds of new chapters for my hot rod. Thanks and keep putting this stuff out! Boost on!!!

good to see you still get the old dsm out. I commented on one of your videos a while back telling you i was trying to buy a 91 tsi awd and a month ago i finnaly got one. runs like total crap, has a broken cv shaft, for some reason the engine wont turn more than 3k rpm's and its running rich enough to get about 10 mpg. even with all of those problems it is by far my favorite car ive ever owned. getting ready to start with and engine swap and replacing the cv shaft, seeing how great yours runs gives me alot of hope for mine. keep up the great videos man, i watch every one the day you post them.

@TomsTurboGarage
@TomsTurboGarage 10 жыл бұрын
ganuv I use 20w-50 synthetic, of course I've been called a fool for running that, so be sure to do your own research. Transmission oil in the DSM world is another very controversial topic, usually folks like either factory spec redline synthetic or something like Pennzoil Synchromesh. Good luck!
@TurboMitsubishi
@TurboMitsubishi 10 жыл бұрын
Synchomesh is a no no according to several builders. Jacks Transmission recommends Mitubishi's gear oil designed for the Evo 8's MR 6 speed trans. Even warranties his transmissions so long as you use it. Do more research or go to jacks website to read more about it.

I personally believe you got rid of the Talon because it was a little ridiculous and almost became unreliable when you snapped the drive shaft on the first launch. It was a great build i give you mad respect on it but i don't know if that platform was the right thing for all that power? It would take a lot more suspension and chassis upgrades and a little more weight in my opinion. Cant wait to see the finished product of your Mazda ls3 build man!! I respect you as a great mechanic and not to mention you have a dream garage i wouldn't mind having!!!
@TomsTurboGarage
@TomsTurboGarage 9 жыл бұрын
Hi there and thank you for the kind words. I sold the Talon for a couple reasons. First, I wasn't driving the car much. Second, I got kicked out of the 1/8 and 1/4 mile tracks for not having a roll cage and other safety equipment given the speed I was running, and I wasn't willing to make those additions. Instead I found the Galant, which is a much more useful car with great character. I posted some more thoughts here: talon.turbomirage.com/talon_goodbye.html.

I just put in a new clutch this past weekend in my 91 Talon (non-turbo) 2.0 and for some reason the "Check Engine" light will not come on when you turn the key and the car cranks but will not start. I heard it could be the ECU. Have any advice? Thanks in advance.

I've noticed that you turn the key to the on position and hold it for a second or two prior to engaging the starter. Assuming this is not for dramatic effect, are you doing this to allow the fuel pump to build pressure in the line? I always seem to have issues with faulty fuel pump check valves.

Hello Tom, I have a two part question here. 1. I have a saturn ion redline and i don't know if you know about them or whatever but i have a supercharged one and atm and my question would be do you think that i should get a stage two supercharger or should i go on a full turbo swap with a smaller pulley, Really curious on your opinion about this cause i can't decide what to do. 2. Just recently bought a talon tsi 1gen with a 4g63 in the motor but it has 280k miles should i swap for a 420a or should i just rebuild the motor? I also would like to make my talon roughly about 500-600hp which out switching to meth if i can or go higher than 91 pump gas cause i live in colorado. Thank you for your opinion and it really helps.

I'll take the quiet comfort of the Grand National. Going fast with class.

Tom's Turbo Garage You always have the biggest smiles when flogging the black beast. I wish it wasn't so snowy and cold here or I'd have mine out for a beat run.

onebadv6 Haha, yes winter is a real bummer for car guys - unless you're building something cool in the garage! The Grand National is a sort of effortless sensation of speed. The Talon (which has a significant power to weight ratio advantage) feels much faster and dangerous. :-D

Tom's Turbo Garage That and the talon has a significant drag advantage. 3600lb brick doesn't go through the air so well.

In this video I was running 25psi. It's amazing the difference between 25 and 30-32psi on this turbo. 25psi is fast but 30-32psi is an all four tire frying off all the freaking time type situation!
