Kind of amazing you found one in this good of shape, seriously. It's like 90's Corollas/Camrys they are beautiful cars, but most Americans just beat them into the ground and don't focus on preserving the vehicle. Never in my life seen a Geo Metro that looked at LEAST decent. If I were you, I would get it restored the best I could (the water rust spot before it gets worse) and just hold on to it. Being one of 33, it will be worth something once no new gas cars are sold.
@LifeAfterLosing
@LifeAfterLosing 2 жыл бұрын
@@rushnerd absolutely! My plan is to replace both rockers and have the whole car taken apart, painted and put all back together so it will be a lot better than new. The original paint was super thin in the first place so a quality paint job will make it so much better.

@@LifeAfterLosing Good on you man. I have a 94 Camry myself (with only 73K miles) and while the clear coat is coming off like a bad sun burn, I've been pretty meticulous on the cosmetic upkeep. Early 90's cars that look very nice are always head turners and show how much you care about your ride.
@LifeAfterLosing
@LifeAfterLosing 2 жыл бұрын
@@rushnerd it’s been a great car as well. I don’t baby it, but I do take good care of it. Literally everything with the suspension, steering and braking is new, all vacuum lines were removed and cleaned when I got it, belts, hoses, timing belt, water pump and so on. I just bought a new radiator for it and will replace that in a few weeks as well in case I want to take it on a long trip, I know everything is perfect mechanically. It’s so simple that I can do it all myself and I love that the most. It makes me more attached to the car.

My mom and I snuck off like Thelma and Louise, minus the murder and cops, in 2000, the week before I started kindergarten in one of these. No cell phones, no maps. All we had were road signs. We drove all over Kentucky that week. We told the family we were gonna go get some Zero bars and drove off. We were poor, but we could afford the drive because of both cheap gas and this little thing. Mom’s been gone 5 years now. I always reflect fondly on that trip when I see one of these. Thanks for the in depth look. Love watching your videos everyday.

I must say, this is the best, and most enthusiastic review I have yet seen for the convertible Metro. Thank you for not dwelling on the bad image that some car snobs project onto Geos. They were economy cars, but people for some reason tend to want to review them as if they were expecting a Corvette. As far as economy cars go, they have proven incredibly resilient. I see probably a couple dozen other early model Geo Metros still on the road to this day, just in the small town I live in. As you said, Japanese engineering! I'm glad you enjoyed riding around in what us other owners like to refer to as our "little hot rod go-karts!"

I own an early 90s Metro Convertible just like this one, with auto transmission. It is an adorable little car and doesn't deserve any hate. Nobody gives the VW beetle a hard time for being slow and simple, thats the whole point of the car! I would highly recommend this car for anyone who likes collecting obscure rides because they are just so cheap to keep maintained. My 3 cylinder Suzuki Swift, which is just a Geo Metro under another name, has been over the last 20 years the most economical, most reliable and the easiest to maintain of all the cars I've owned. The engine needs no valve-lash adjustment, as it has hydraulic lifters, and one can change the cam-belt in an hour. All other maintenance is also very easy. The engine is burning no oil at 220000 miles and still giving excellent economy. Thanks to good ground clearance and the car's narrowness, I can take it onto dreadful tracks. With relatively high gearing and an unburstable engine, the car is happy at 75 mph on the motorway. I'm not especially poor and could buy a more luxurious car. But I enjoy the special sound of the Swift's willing little engine and the feeling that the car is there to help me. I can fix what little needs fixing and feel I'm in charge of the car, not the other way round!

The Yugos were "advertised" at $4000, which sounds great but most were marked up way above that figure. Combined with how outdated* they were and their poor reliability, it wasn't such a great deal. The Yugo was based off the Fiat 127 that was first released in 1972(!) It also had 45 hp and a ridiculous 5 gallon fuel tank. GM had the Chevette at the time, which was still outdated (75) but it had a reliable Isuzu engine.

Love those Samurais & Jimneys too. Both my daughters 1st cars were Samurais we had 4, all together, I each & one for parts. they never broke down. I went crazy in early 2000's and bought about 15 samurais total 1/2 were runners and half project units.. had a rock crawler &. a tin top daily driver. Paid less than 1500 for pristine runners in very good shape and 200-400 for the others, I sat on the parts cars for about 5 years and they tripled in value, so I sold the lot of them., fast forward 20 years and they are very pricey units now especially living in my low budget world. Suzuki/ Geo & Izusu saved Chevrolet's faltering ass back in the day, My only other car is still a 1941 chevy 1.5t truck, veteran from from ww2 it has 800k miles on the clock & on its 3rd engine a 1959 235 6cylinder. I can't find any info about it online so I figured it was some aftermarket thing. Any ways it reminds me of the blue/red decal on this metro and now I'm wondering if it was some obscure geo dealer option.

They were dealer installed options. They were extremely popular on a lot of the smaller and more fun cars in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The decals were put on all types of cars from trucks to little cars. Splashes, waves, heartbeats, smoke, lasers, and so on.

The Yugo's engine screamed near redline just driving around town. The Yugo had trouble going up a mild hill. People could deal with that, BUT when the keys would break just opening the car door. That was the end of Yugo.

those gas numbers are way off from my experience. In the 90's when I was a teenager my mom had a 1st gen with the recessed headlights. My dad and I took it from NC to upstate NY and we averaged 71mpg on that trip. Granted thats all highway travel, but that was the most fuel efficient car ive ever seen. Even modern hybrids dont get those numbers.

I'm In my late 30s and for anyone my age this car and the tracker were the 2 legit top off vehicles that at least for me instant time machine me back to a time where someone would be in there late teens early 20s just getting ahold of what being an adult is and feeling like you have a rad car and that's hilarious becuz people older and younger than me could never have that kinda feeling while driving a geo... that being said if you preferred having a roof the Foxbody stang or the rallyed up spec escort would also convey the same feelings... I love how the garbage cars I had to drive becuz my early Driving year fell in between where all us lower middle class Midwestern kids could afford where what was considered just trash under powered cars.. but now a days since car company's want to charge a home mortgage price for a vehicle made of plastic and every thing is engine out and blows up after warranty so finally the cars I used to just run into the ground are becoming classics and are now at a price point I can't afford a decent example of... so it's like when u hear an old man talk about driving some epic muscle car that was 2grand brand new but now I'm that guy and the vehicles are always this random quirky time machines.... you know it's sad when you remember driving off road in trackers and manual 4wd astrovans... lmao

Me and my friend destroyed one of these when we were kids back in the early 2000s. My neighbor gave it to us because it wouldn't pass inspection so we took it on a rally through the fourwheeler trails behind my parents house and ended up having to pull it out of there with a tractor. Good times.

Even if you just keep the stock engine but mod it enough to make it drivable at modern highway speeds. It would be a great car especially for the gas mileage

Yes Metro came with either 1.0L 3 cylinder engine or 1.3L 4 cylinder engine. Even 4 cylinder engine wasn't exactly a powerhouse - you would be lucky to go 0-60 in 15 seconds.

I believe a Canadian Swift version was offered with the G16 - 1.6 liter, the U.S. got two versions of the 1.3 - the Swift GTI was the twin cam version. I am considering swapping a Kubota diesel to one of my Metros . I've heard claims of 75 mpg, but others say I can mod the gasoline 1.0 to about 60 mpg by duplicating the XFI spec Metro. I have a twin cam Swift motor that has double the horsepower of the 3 cylinder G10.

Your history on the origins of the Metro Vert is a little off, it was supposed to be a California market car by Suzuki rebadging their Suzuki Cultus Convertible and exporting it. Suzuki debuted it at the 1990 Frankfurt car show and then dropped its plans to export it, GM under the Geo badge picked it up, stripped alot of the options such as power windows, 1.3L TBI engine, alloy wheels etc and sold it as a watered down 1L econo box that you see here.
