Attending college in Guadalajara, Mexico, at the time, me and a couple of friends were visiting a tiny town coastal town smack dab between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta, I reckon it was during the span of the last 4 games of this series happening. There were very few bars in the area of as-yet-"undiscovered" small towns, we spent our nights at one particular bar where Jasso the bartender informed us that their satellite dish, one of the old big ones, couldn't move, the motor had broken down a couple of days before and the technician hadn't arrived yet, just my typical luck. As CBS was not on that particular satellite, Jasso scanned the transponders and CNN turned out to be the most useful station, updating game info every 10-15 minutes with text on the bottom of the screen. It felt like every night, every time they showed the score and inning, my friends and I turned to look at each other and went "Oh My GOD!" We were missing out on the best Series since '75 and probably ever, but we did experience, it in a very limited way via news ticker and nothing else, in a truly special, magical environment. BTW, as the Twins had already won in '87 (and I was rooting for them then), this time I was going for the Braves. Although just barely. Almost subconsciously even, leaning just an inch in that direction. I really liked... no, strike that, I LOVED... Glavine's breakout season.

I look down through comments below and the many debates about whether or not this World Series was the best of all time and see many legitimate arguments as to why was not and why others were. That is the essence of the love of baseball fandom. However, I will stand by the argument that Game 7 of this WS was without question the most amazing and gutsiest pitching performances by two pitchers EVER in the highest of staked games. Today's baseball mentality will never see the likes of such again. And being a diehard Braves fan for over 40 years, I will be the first to admit that Jack Morris's performance was the stuff that baseball dreams are made of. John Smoltz held his own for as long as he could, but Jack Morris was a baseball god that night. When one truly considers ALL the factors that two teams, that were the worst teams in baseball in 1990 and both became the best teams in baseball a year later...and all the drama of the series...ending with clearly the most amazingly pitched Game 7...there is truly a valid basis for calling this the best World Series of all time...this far. Just my opinion.
@ADEAL9185 жыл бұрын
Tawnku Imi-Uru I wonder whether later in his career, Cox would have stayed with Smoltz as long as Kelly stayed with Morris. Because Smoltz truly matched Morris pitch for pitch in that Game 7, the difference was that Smoltz was taken out when he got into the same jam that Morris had just pitched out of.

@billny339 жыл бұрын
Clarence Parker III I think the backdrop of 9/11 added a tremendous layer of emotional depth to the 01 WS that may factor into some people's opinions of this debate...including my own. For a while I had the 01 WS as the greatest ever. But the truth is games 1 and 6 were VERY lopsided and game 2 while close for 7 innings before Matt Williams hit a 3 run HR off Pettitte, wasn't quite a classic either. Randy Johnson would have won 1-0 even without that shot. So I think the idea is that the 91 WS was more closely contested through all 7 games than 01. And games 3 and 4 from 91 closely mirror games 4 and 5 from 01. The team that ultimately lost the series winning 2 dramatic walk offs in a row to get them back in it and help make them likely to win the series before going back on the road where they would ultimately lose in heartbreaking fashion in game 7.

Such an epic series when you consider the Twins were so close to going up 3-0 or 3-1 only to lose game 5 in a rout and suddenly the Twins find themselves on the brink after a rout. Kirby accounts for all 4 of the runs in 6 plus a spectacular catch, and game 7 could have gone either way in regulation but key defensives stands in almost every inning. Morris accounts for all 30 outs for the Twins and Gladden accounts for the first and final run of the series. TK said it best after game 6. Storybook series.
@billny332 жыл бұрын
I was not yet a baseball fan (I think I was 8) when this series happened but I feel like there are a lot of similarities between this and the 2001 World Series. The home team won all 7 games, there were back to back games in the middle of the series where the team trailing 2-0 won incredibly dramatic, epic games that created the feeling that they were a team of destiny en route to going up 3-2, however that team was in for a rude awakening when going back on the road for games 6 and 7 where the series ended in dramatic, walk off fashion and everyone believes the team that lost game 7 had an absolutely golden opportunity and should have won. Both series threw the absolute kitchen sink at baseball fans. Perhaps the main difference in the series was Arizona really dominating games 1, 2 and 6. The 91 series only had 1 game where one team really put some distance between them and their opponents like that, which was game 5. But I think other than that, and all the raw, post-9/11 emotions being spilled into the 2001 series and the unique double worst-to-first storyline draped over the '91 series, they are remarkably similar.

This is the greatest World Series of all time(!). I was a Braves fan, but by the end of this gripping contest, I honestly couldn't decide which team truly deserved the title more(!). When Gagne's 3-run HR in Game 1 proudly affirmed the Twins' presence to all suddenly-worrying Braves fans, we all knew this would be a Series for the books, despite the Braves' loud double-digit victory in Game 5(!). Perhaps the Twins deserved the ultimate win they really earned, but still, many sports-writers and fans rank the 1991 MLB World Series as one of the greatest men's athletic contests of all time, lumping it with other 'trophies' (e.g., 1992 Duke-Kentucky NCAA tourney-thriller, 1982 soccer World Cup, Super Bowl LII [NFL], Ali-Frazier [boxing])! I became a secret/silent Twins fan after this Series and purchased a Kirby Puckett baseball-card. This is why sports is so...delicious. Thanks for posting this(!). God bless...

I look at all the comments remembering the 1991 series and I feel I missed out on a national party. For me, the cherry on top was when a _little 7-year old girl_ sang the national anthem in game 7, which melted America's collective heart. That just doesn't happen anymore. Why'd I have to be born in 1992?
@billny337 жыл бұрын
webstedge1099 i was born in 1983 but did not become a baseball fan until 1994. I missed out on this and Toronto beating Atlanta and Joe Carter's HR in 93, but I still enjoyed learning about it as history even if its not as great as seeing it live. Every fan will get their collection of moments.
@webstedge10997 жыл бұрын
I was born in September of '92 and I like to think of 1991 as my conception year (it wasn't until that week between Christmas and New Year's) and I was 2 when the strike cancelled the '94 series. I am hoping that in the future we will get another World Series that can be right up there with, or maybe even top 1991 as one of the best WS ever. What I did see live was when the Diamondbacks stopped the Yankees from winning 4 in a row and spoiled their 9/11 tribute playoff run. That one will have a special place in my heart as one of my worst sports-watching moments. I think Mariano singlehandedly cost NY the championship (although the Snakes did win 3 games by a combined 28-3 and just like 87 and 1991, 2001 had home teams go 7-0.) I also saw when Matt Harvey almost pitched a CG shutout only to completely fall apart at the end. I lived through, but didn't watch on TV, when both Sox teams ended a combined 174-year title drought by sweeping two WS in a row, and when the Yankees celebrated a championship in their first year of their new stadium.
@billny337 жыл бұрын
webstedge1099 the Diamondback loss was nothing short of soul-crushing. I'm def with you there. You hinted at the White Sox breaking their own 88 yr curse in 2005. How bizarre is it that the general public just shrugged their shoulders and said "meh" at a title for the long starving White Sox franchise?
@webstedge10997 жыл бұрын
I really can't speak about the 2005 White Sox, I like how their series with the Astros was one of the closer ones where it just went the same way 4 times in a row. 2004 wasn't really that bad in hindsight, as Boston rode an unlikely 8-game win streak straight to the Promised Land before the Yankees and Cardinals knew what was going on, making for a great storyline. But I still cannot look at pictures of the Arizona players dancing on the field. What's crazy is that Arizona (never mind the fact that they literally came out of nowhere to win the championship and have done next to nothing since) wound end up being the first in a string of 6 different champions in 6 years, and 7 different teams in 8 years. About having the little kid singing the national anthem, I wish something like that would happen again. It also happened in 1996 when an 8-year old sang the anthem in game 6 at yankee stadium.
@billny337 жыл бұрын
webstedge1099 the Red Sox beating the Yanks in 04 crushed me too but it was great for the game I must admit. Their Series win vs St Louis to me was basically an epilogue and nothing more. Game 1 was entertaining but after that it was a very boring World Series other than the fact that the curse was broken. 05 was very exciting all 4 games. I also think the 2011 WS game 6 is about as epic as 1986 WS game 6 and I'm glad I got to witness such an unbelievable death defying comeback. 2016 WS game 7 I think is also something no one will ever forget, the longest cursebreaker of them all. Are you a Yankee fan or did you just get behind them extra strong that year after 9/11? I actually got over that loss by watching the tape of that 9th over and over and over until I was numb to it. Not easy but I think it was the only way. A lot of painful imagery in that postgame celebration from a Yankee standpoint.

I think it was partly because the Blue Jays went 8-4 against the Twins during the regular season that year. But much like to why did to the Tigers in 1987, a team that also went 8-4 against the Twins that year, The Twins beat the Blue Jays in just 5 games.

I remember when me and dad watched this and he told that when you look back at the Braves in the 90s you would think for how great a team they were you thought that the Braves were the team of the 90s. The Braves won 5 pennants and only won one World Series in 1995. Instead the Yankees reversed that.
@krog213 жыл бұрын
Team of the EARLY 90s. The Yanks, as we know, owned the mid 90s. I'd say San Francisco was the team of the 10s (well 1st half, similar to the Braves of the 90s) but not really sure who the team of the 2000's were. A lot of teams had good 2-3 year runs. Maybe Boston?

I would also argue that the 10 shutout innings were more gutsy than dominant. He had a lot of tough innings in that game that he somehow found a way through. I expected a 10-inning 1-0 game to have a quick pace with a lot of 1-2-3 innings, a lot of strikeouts, and it really wasn't like that when I watched the whole game.

Despite what people say about Kirby Puckett not being a HOF because of short career from the eye condition he had. The way I see it he is a HOF he was a five tool player. He really was a great ballplayer. Granted if it wasn't for the eye condition he had he probably could have played longer and he might have gotten 3,000 hits. But all in all Kirby Puckett is a HOF.

yeah and shame on Tim McCarver who played in the 60s, certainly had to be following baseball in '57 when the Milwaukee Braves won, he should know better.
@SuperfanDK7 жыл бұрын
As much as I disliked McCarver as a commentator, I'll actually defend him on this one... Even though he said "Braves", I think he actually meant Atlanta, since this was the first time the Braves made the World Series since they moved there.
@kcaruso375 жыл бұрын
@@SuperfanDK yes, but it seems like when you hear it over and over he said the first time ever. shouldve said it little differently. on the braves 1991 season tape, ernie johnson sr said, first win since 1958 ws. that makes more sense to me. i know they lost the 1958 WS but meaning they won a game. 1958 just like 1991, the world series played all 7 games

@billny3310 жыл бұрын
I don't think he needs to sound more excited though. Len Cariou is the best at narrating these films and he does so in a very understated manner. I think Ernie's voice is just much more natural when calling play by play and doesn't carry over properly to this. I think in this video it sounds awkward and exposes him as having a tired old man's voice. He is a legend for sure, just not great work in this video.
