The airbag story on these are kind of weird, they had driver bags only from 1992-1993 and dual bags from 1994-1996. Aside from that, the driver airbag design was changed some time between '92 and '96, not sure what the cut-off year is (I think it's '94 or '95). The earlier driver airbag design was untethered and was more likely to break your nose than the tethered driver airbag in the later models, such as the '96 tested here. The passenger airbag on these was always bad, it was a mid-mounted design that deployed straight at the occupant. It came back too far and was overly aggressive. The next generation Camry, and all subsequent Camrys have used a far superior top-mounted airbag design that initially deploys along the windshield before curling back toward the occupant, though the '97 had a design flaw that resulted in a few people getting eye injuries. The 1998 and later Camrys all have a perfectly safe and effective passenger airbag. I'd rather have the driver airbag than not have it in any of this generation of Camry - even the earlier one will help more than it hurts. The passenger airbag, I wonder if it would inflict more injuries than it prevents for a belted occupant. In this test, it looks like the passenger probably wouldn't have hit the dash even without an airbag. The 5th percentile passenger in the other test would be at even more risk of airbag injury. As a kid from about 9 to 12 years old, I often rode in the front seat of a '94 Camry coupe. If that passenger airbag had went off... yikes! I would have lived, but that would have HURT! My family used to have a 96 Camry wagon. When I first saw the IIHS pics, I thought the passenger airbag looked way too big and was worried that it would do more harm than good.

Interesting! I would guess the driver air bag in the 1992 Celica I used to drive is probably the same kind as the one in the 92 Camry you mentioned. Glad it never went off! I found a crash in the SCI archives where a 90s Camry, I want to say a 96, had a head-on collision with a dump truck. The driver of the dump truck died, but the female driver and female child passenger in the Camry lived, albeit with major injuries. I was surprised.

The most ubiquitous car of the 90's by far, my grandpa drove one to 300k and crashed it into the San Diego trolley and a crazy girl I knew had a wagon version with well over 350k

The golden decade for Toyota IMO (not necessarily for safety!)

I have a '96 this same color. I think this did pretty well for a car ancient by today's standards.

So the car was at least 5yrs old at the time and probably had two owners by that time.
