That was nearly me a couple years ago same year and color Camry too. Except it was a cop car who thought it was a good idea to drive @9 at night in an area without street lights (area now has it) without any lights on. I was making a left so I had to cross over a lane of traffic (looked empty). If I was 5 secs later they probably would have hit me. They never stopped. They then turned on their driving lights, not even headlights. It was a black car with police in white on the hood which is why I didn’t see any of it before they nearly hit me and how I know it was a cop.

Poor side impact performance isn't unusual for something designed prior to 2000. The 1997-2001 Camry Sedan's side structure remained unchanged for all five years of production.

Relative to new cars, yes. But you have to remember this is a 25-year-old design, and when it was new it was actually much safer than the average new car. It aced the IIHS offset crash test. The side impact protection was mediocre, but it was just as bad or even worse on most new cars then. Plus, with the optional side airbags, the Camry would have done a bit better.
