I've got a blue '92 Convertible, bought it 9 years ago for $1,300. When I rebuilt the motor I weighed the stripped bare block, my fat Shih Tzu dog weighed the same.... 28 lbs. The car now has a white top, white wall tires with moon hub caps. It gets more attention than my LeMans tribute C5 Corvette.

Two things, your car sounds like it looks amazing and that engine should always be referred to as weighing in as one 28 lb chunky Shih Tzu.

I saw a Dusty xfi parked in a lot with only 26,000 miles and I left a note in the windshield and they called me. That was 2018 and I am so glad that I bought it with my 60 mile commute and current gas prices
@autoobsessivegarage2 жыл бұрын
That’s unbelievable! Most have a massive amount of mileage due specifically to their awesome fuel economy. Well bought.

I had a 1992 Suzuki Swift GT with the 1.3l twin cam engine and it was a blast to drive. The turbo 3 cyl Chevrolet Sprint or Pontiac Firefly were fun too (before they changed the brand to Geo)

I love the swift GTI and GT models! Agreed also on the Sprint especially for its intercooler decal.

You did not mention one of the reasons for putting all the captive imports that GM was selling under the GEO brand nameplate. Chevrolets big ads and sales line was "The Heartbeat of America" and were celebrating the American spirit and it was felt that selling a foreign built car with the ads stating what great American cars and trucks that Chevrolet was building (presumingly in the US) and selling would lead to lawsuits because the imports were not built in America.
@autoobsessivegarage Жыл бұрын
You are correct that Geo was created to sell their captive imports under a different brand. What’s extra interesting is that the Chevy bow tie logo can be found inside the Geo globe logo.

I bought one, as a teen. I also had a '65 mustang, so the power was embarrassingly lacking. On my way to graduation, I was forced three lanes of traffic by a wind gust. If you added RXP, you could get 50mpg. It was good for a kid delivering pizza. I hated everything about the interior. I customized it, the best a kid could in the '90's. An old man bought it off of me, in my youth. He was a weirdo that collected them. I regret letting it go, when fuel prices are high. It was sooo basic in options, but after only driving and restoring classics, as a kid, it was in line with those basic options. Wind noise was awful, top was plastic and cost a fortune to replace due to sun exposure. The engine has to be removed to replace a tranny seal. Over $3k in the 90's. I JB welded it, as a kid, due to the cost.🤣
@autoobsessivegarage2 жыл бұрын
That’s an epic story. Yeah, these things were certainly lacking in the power department but balanced it out somewhat with that fuel economy. JB Weld for the win haha.

If I had the money to be stupid, I'm spending it on a 92 Performance Blue Geo Metro Convertible and turning it into a tesla-powered RWD or AWD EV with the dumbest thickboy tires I could find, which is fine, because I'm pretty sure the whole chassis is so flimsy that the only thing that would survive a conversion is the body anyway. Nobody expects a Geo Metro to tear ass down down the street.
@autoobsessivegarage2 жыл бұрын
I fully support that build. Damn that would be fun.

I owned a first year convertible and the car was a blast. The only reason you bought gas was that your brain said it has been a few weeks it has to need gas!!!!! Mid 40s fuel economy a drop top and it was under 9 grand new . Car was much better then I expected !!!!!

Yes you are correct. But their value peaked in 2008 due to the economic crisis. People were playing more for cheap and fuel efficient vehicles.

@@autoobsessivegarage The 1.3 twin cam motor from the Swift GTi has about 100 hp, it is an easy swap to the Metro. I have that motor. I've heard that a Suzuki 1.6 was used in Canada. A Honda D series should also be a good swap for more power. Beyond that you need to clearance the frame to use larger motors. I've never driven an original Mini Cooper, but in most regards a Metro is a better little car, but because the generic styling - the pizza car reputation, not many mod Metros.
