@TheAnalXylophone6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, is there a specialised mkIII Supra shop, as is Prime for MR2s?
@AeRiaL_6 жыл бұрын
I'm unaware of this with the MK3, did it just keep blowing headgaskets? What was the problem?
@andersonjukebox83156 жыл бұрын
AeRiaL Basically the 7M-GTE (the engine Americans were stuck with) werent able to handle the turbo they shoehorned in, so the headgaskets blew. Extremely frequently. Same situation as the MR2 apparently. Some fellas figured out the correct amount of pressure to torque wrench the headgasket to make it... better, but eh... It had other problems as well, I guess with the fuel pump. Toyota made the legendary and over engineered 1JZ (Japan only... woo...) in response to this. A lot of people just swap out their 7M for a 1JZ or 2JZ.

As someone who owned a '91 Turbo that put down about 430-450 whp by the time I finally sold it, I'd put the trap-door air volume sensor up there pretty high on problems, as well. Less for reliability reasons and more as a roadblock to tuning the motor once modified. Other annoyance include access to the fuel tank, the electro-hydraulic power steering system (all of it), the cable clutch, and the double pulley throttle/cruise motor. And then there's the pneumatic-controlled variable intake manifold, the 5th fuel injector in the throttle, the crazy pneumatic staged boost control and relief valve... the list goes on. This car was literally a dumping ground for all the crazy engineering projects Toyota had in the early 90's.
@jacoblharris6 жыл бұрын
Most everything you listed was corrected with the JDM 94+ MR2s and the gen3 engine. No more AFM, TVIS, or cold start injector. The MR2 never had a cable clutch though, always hydraulic.
@MrSaturn70856 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and that would be fantastic except we didn't get any of that here. Hydraulic clutch? What did I replace the bushing on with a brass bearing then... shift linkage cable? It's been about 8 years since I sold mine off.

Fuck trueno/AE86 circlejerk caused by that anime. MR2s and Celica GTFours are much better cars than AE86 or Supra ever was... thanks to this stupid circlejerking it's impossible to get AE86 or Supras for proper prices. I can attest to all of this. I'm going through hell sorting my car out right now. Bought my mr2 turbo as it stood, "someone else's project". I think I do have a blown headgasket, and the intercooler fans I had did not work. I actually just bought a little specialty rad hose from Prime MR2, and they had to wait on the part from Toyota. He communicated this greatly though, and even refunded my shipping and sent a key tag in as well. I asked for neither haha. Great company, difficult car.. Here's to keeping them on the road.

Car looks rather nice. Mods appear to be done in a tasteful and relatively clean way, so kudos to that guy. And regarding that Delorean thing... The odd guy with the mildly boosted LX9 resto-mod Fiero probably gets even less attention than the comparable equivalent MR2. (Since the car looks mostly stock with the visible changes in the engine bay being understated.) Sometimes the art of doing it right is to appreciate it for yourself.

I really want to make my SW20 show worthy some day, it has 400K miles on the original motor and clutch, its my daily driver at the moment. Part of me wants to do an electric conversion, but the other half of me wants to keep it semi pure and do a turbo swap, or maybe an MK3 engine. I get a lot of parts at mr2srus but prime driven will probably be my next stop, they have good prices on all the replacement trim pieces that have cracked that i need. I should probably address the suspension first though, most of its original.
