Glavine started the game? This looked more like a Charlie Leibrandt special.

The most exciting Championship series of all time. Braves and Pirates had just repeated in their respective divisions. The Pirates started as favorites and had a series of players with the talent to be World Series champions. Led by Barry Bonds Andy Van Slike, Orlando Merced, Cecil Spi, Jay Bell, the Lind boy. But they did not hit in the entire series, they were handcuffed by the Braves' poker of aces. John Smolz, Steve Avery, Tom Glavine and Chalie Librand would later be joined by surgeon Gregg Maddux from the Chicago Cubs. In the seventh game, Doug Drabek threw a jewel of a pitch, entering the 9th, not winning 2 x 0 against the Braves, but a very costly error by José Lind at second base in a routine play opened the gap for the Braves' reaction, who with a golden hit by pinch-hitter Francisco Cabrera left the Pirates on the field Andy Van Slike from center field almost put out Sid Bream at the plate who seemed like he would never arrive, he was a slow runner Bobbi Cox should have replaced him that detail could have change history. It should be noted that the atmosphere in the Braves was very exciting, the fans' axes beating the indigenous drums, the chemistry of that team was unique. On the side of the Pirates led by the great strategist Jin Leyland, they had a very good rotation team with Drabek, Wagner, Bob Wak, Zane Smitt, John Smily, The knuckleballer Tim Wakfield who drove the entire Braves slugger crazy with that pitch As a butterfly, he won 2 duels, game 3 and game six. The frustration on Van Slike's face, sitting as the outfielder, like the rest of the team, couldn't believe it. The other side of the coin. Explosion of joy from the Atlanta Braves, the stadium collapsed. Fun fact Drabek at that time was the first pitcher to lose 3 games in a championship series. The offensive heart of the Pirates in both editions 91 and 92 did not hit and yet they played 7 games in both editions. The last great Pirates Team Word and the birth of a Braves dynasty

Check your spelling. In any case 1980 and 1986 were all-time classics. Any chance this had of being a classic was ruined when Randy Marsh blew the call in Game 7.

A few years later I was "legally required" to later run into #RADickey43 also in Chicago 2009 while a proud member of #TwinsMLB and likely the game Tim pitched in Chicago there was stiff wind blowing in. #Knucklecurve only likes calm or winds blowing out😊😊😊❤❤❤

I noticed something about this game--I know hindsight is always 20/20, but still. Wakefield was the Pirates' star in this series--they had a weak bullpen, their main liability all year, but it wasn't particularly overworked, having not been used since Game 4 and not in Game 3 at all. They had an 8-0 lead by the SECOND INNING in this game. (And 12-1 after five.) Why on earth did Leyland let Wakefield go the distance in this game with that kind of a lead? Why not take him out after 5 or 6 innings and then he might have been able to use him out of the bullpen for Game 7 if needed? That could have made a big difference rather than leaving a clearly tiring Drabek in to complete the game and then having to go to a not particularly reliable closer in Belinda.
@douglassher17104 жыл бұрын
There's a lot to second guess - for instance, with Belinda being an extreme fly ball pitcher, why not bring in lefty Bob Patterson to face Damon Berryhill, which would have greatly increased the chances of an inning ending double play? And you're right, the bullpen was completely rested. But at the end of the day, the game could have gone either way, it all came down to one unlikely hit.

Drabek wasn't tired going into the 9th. He retired the previous 5 hitters and struck out 2 in the 8th. The problem was he thought he was going to be taken out, because the Pirates had relievers warming up since the 7th. And he mentally checked out.

Rob Square could be very true. But again it’s actually very understandable for Leyland to decide that staying with Drabek was still a lower risk than going to the Pirates’ notoriously unreliable bullpen. But the key question is whether that calculus might have been different if Leyland had removed Wakefield after he had the big lead in Game 6 instead of letting him go the distance. The bullpen surely could have been entrusted with an eight-run lead (it was actually 11 by the 5th inning) to hold for three or four innings, and if so, maybe Leyland could have gone to Wakefield to close out Game 7-talk about REALLY sealing an MVP performance! True a knuckleballer is easier to steal on, but with a two-run lead even that’s less of an issue and I wonder if Leyland later regretted letting Wakefield go the distance in Game 6 with an eight-run lead by the third inning.

Jose Lind doesnt make the error he does in the 9th, and all of this is a moot point
@npc1092 жыл бұрын
I think it comes down to this logic, and I can't fault Leyland for thinking this way....Game 7 doesn't matter if you don't win Game 6. Worry about the moment in front of you. An 8 run lead against Atlanta at Fulton was never a 100% sure thing.....plus, you may need long relief in game 7 if Drabek struggles again, as he did in games 1 and 4. He could have put Tomlin or Danny Jackson in I guess...but yeah I still think it's just win this game and we will worry about game 7 when we need to.

Unfortunately the outcome of Game 7 was catastrophically bad, but if you’re a Pirates fan, you could watch games 5 and 6 of this series and feel good about this team. They showed great character in pushing it that far.

How in the world could Leyland have not played Lloyd McClendon and his .727 average in Game 7? He benched him in favor of Alex Friggin' Cole.

Douglas Sher extreme plattoon deference. Simple left/righty matchups. But yes, that doesn't apply as much with right handed batters. Generally right handed hitters do better against right handed pitchers than lefty batters do against lefty pitchers.
