1:26:05 Sometimes Seaman's positioning was mind-boggling. Great goalkeeper over the years, one of the true greats, but this is reminiscent of Nayim and Ronaldinho lobbing him from all sorts of positions.

Agreed. Even at 1:32:42 he's beaten too easily at his near post. Hardly a rocket shot, and a good 20 yards out.
@ShaneJoshua19807 ай бұрын
In fairness Koeman's reputation proceeded him and Seaman's form for about 3 years was patchy compared to 91 when he should have been in the running for PFA player of the year. His positioning was awful though and he was my hero. The wall didn't need to be as big either but ultimately Taylor wasted so much potential in this squad.

Not having a habituated defence (why not Arsenal's?) and world-class full-backs cost us. Dorigo was excellent at club level and was a cracking free-kick specialist, but just kicking the ball back to the Dutch showed he felt out of his depth - he did have a tough job, but Ashley Cole / Walker, etc later showed the quality needed at WC level. I liked Parker, but he was equally mindless in possession at times. How Taylor couldn't also see that what we needed was a player up top, like Sheringham, from the outset to receive all those mindless booted balls, get them to stick, and then thread them through. Even Shearer couldn't do it in this game and was lost as a consequence. Sharpe was invisible unless conceding the ball, and Merse showed flashes of skill, but as with Waddle, there was never an end product for England in the must-win games. Seaman was a twunt and I never forgave him! I couldn't believe we weren't going to the USA despite supporting a team with the likes of Thomas and Palmer.

Seaman was horrendous in this match - even with his good saves - and I honestly think he was rather poor for England in big matches in general. He seemed to save his worst decisions for the worst possible moments (like his positioning on Bergkamp's goal). That said, the yellow card for Koeman was a farce and he certainly would have been sent off if this match had been played in the age of VAR. Even VAR would have gotten that right without question.

I remember watching this game, and was amazed at Taylors selection, and unfit Shearer, Carlton Palmer and Tony Dorigo, I think his hand was forced due to suspensions and injures, but please you had the whole Arsenal back four to choose from, and you pick Dorigo!. You have to agree with Taylor that the officiating in the game was terrible, the Ref looked as though he was way out of his depth. However, as a team, you should never rely on the officials to win you a game.
@lucasm38794 ай бұрын
Dorigo is actually under rated - if you’re talking about the Arsenal back four, I’d probably pick Dorigo above Winterburn for left back. He won the ‘92 league with Leeds, and was in the ‘90 world cup squad. Other selections bu GT are more questionable to me, namely Palmer, Pallister and Sharpe. Even Merson up front, I would have probably preferred Wright or Sheringham.

That really was an awful England side. Carlton Palmer and Lee Sharpe in a 3 man midfield? Carlton always gave 110%, but lacked quality and technical ability at this level. Lee Sharpe, just wasnt all that great (overrated and overhyped at that time), and certainly wasn't a 'worker'. Lots of long balls and hoofing it forward. Thank god our game in England has massively improved. In terms of skill, technique, and keeping possesion, our players nowadays match other nations.
