Thanks for posting! Two things I remember about this telecast...the deep inside line all the players used, and the number of bad taps WRW got in one game to lose after he led by 500 pins.

And Walter used a urethane ball and played much further right then he did during this telecast. Had he stuck to that game plan and played where he did earlier in the week, the outcome could have been different. But we'll never know, right?

I think he was forced to play the line that Del played because Del was shooting lights out from that line. Walter probably figured he needed 230-240 to win and didnt see that condition from the 2nd arrow on fresher oil doing the job.

Incredible that this was Del Ballard Jr's final PBA Title! Ballard, who joined the PBA in 1982, won 12 PBA titles and had 6 second place finishes from 35 TV appearances between 1983 and 1994 with two further cameos in 1997 and 2006 respectively. Seems to have been a player hurt by the introduction of reactive resin equipment.

Del Ballard Jr. put on a clinic in execution on a very demanding oil pattern!! His shots were very smart and accurate, and he made all of his spares, which is so vital on conditions especially like this one.

Interesting in 1981, the BPAA director claimed 4400 members, and at this time, I believe Chris said 3100... O U C H Wonder what it is today? I know that when I went on tour in 07, it was a shell of it's former self

Fewer bowling centers in operation; with that being said, there would be fewer members of that organization. Many independent centers got bought out by bigger companies such as AMF, Brunswick, Fair Lanes, etc.

A very flat pattern was used for this event. Word has it that Walter Ray was bombing them during match play using urethane. Not sure if urethane would have worked on the TV show.

@@irishpogi I was here and helped 'caddy' for the event. After qualifying, my fellow youth bowlers and I got to bowl on the lanes. It was easily the toughest condition I ever bowled on. Couldn't get my ball to come back from outside at all with my trusty Blue Hammer. As "pay" for caddying I got my pick of one of the many balls that were left behind. I picked up a Nuke -- same as Westlake was using on the show. To see him play deep inside and relatively straight with a ball I couldn't keep on the right side of the head pin on a house shot is a testament to how difficult the lanes were!

@@matthewcalabresi504 I heard Nelson Burton Jr describe the conditions. Once you saw what average you needed to have to cash and then to make match play, you know they were very difficult

I love when the pattern tough. With these guys skill, having much play in the lane is too easy for them. A war of attrition in bowling is best. Just my opinion 🤷
