Of all the modern Skyline GT-Rs, it aged well. The R33 is the fat middle kid that everyone ignores. The R34 is the cool one that's been hitting the gym that everyone wants. The R32 is clean and subtle but purposeful.

To me, the R32-R34's have the prefect car shape. It's like they took a basic 2 door 4 seat car, and tightened up every line, tweaked each detail, and made the ideal "normal car" shape.

holy f888 what a great episode. this is not an easy car to explain to people who are older than gen z but you did it perfectly ANNNNND you even recorded shots like at the 17:00 minute mark with an old camera. you hit the rose tinted glasses square in this episode. thank you for such great writing and creativity and passion. When I was 16 I was playing gran turismo all day every day and that's what sparked my passion for the skyline but as someone who is nearly 40 I realize that it's more of a character than a car and that's pure magic. it's what any car manufacturer is gagging for. A car that doesn't need to be the best and you'll always forgive it because it's the super hero you love and I think since the mid 2000s cars have all become a little pathetic.

Be it nostalgia, rose-tinted glasses, whatever it really is, there is this overwhelming sense that we just don't get cars that are made like this anymore. It's either a grocery-getting sedan/SUV or something sporty with a price-tag 30 grand more than you can afford. I understand Skyline's aren't cheap to afford but I also understand they were affordable in Japan when they came out, and there's so many cars similar to the Skyline from that era that it just feels like we don't get anymore. And there was so much in between too, cars like the 3000gt VR4, the 300zx, hell even the lower echelon like the Prelude, the Eclipse, the Tiburon, the Celica, there's just no market for those anymore it seems, but there was something so truly special about them. Cars that had passion, cars that were fun for the sake of being fun and didn't cost 60 grand after dealer markups. Cars that HAD no dealer markups. It feels like the 80s, 90s, and even early 2000s, had an absolute explosion of fun little cars that held this aura about them that they were so much better than they really were. I owned an '04 Eclipse for quite a few years and sure, the engine only made 150 hp at like 4,500, but it also made 145lbft at like 2,500, so the thing really felt so much faster than it was. And it was LIGHT, it was so incredibly light, the handling made you feel like you were in a racecar. It was a very similar experience to the Miata just FWD and none of the clout. Something about all those cars, and how we just don't get them anymore makes me feel like we lost something so important

We had lots of Skylines running around Aus some years ago. It seems like many have either been wrecked or gone into hiding. Now they're rare and special to see again. I get more attention now in my R34 GT-T than I used to - although I usually keep it hidden away too. Owning and driving one is a privilege most people just won't ever be able to have now.

@@ingusmant Import what exactly? Not sure on your context. Australia has/had a scheme called SEVS (Specialist and enthusiast vehicles). Skylines have been allowed under this. Funnily enough, the R34 did come in a 2L variant (RB20) but this was deemed not powerful enough for SEVS criteria. Our legislation literally mandated that you could only import the models with larger, more powerful engines 🤣 There were R32 GTSTs running around, but not many, at the time people either went for R32 GTR’s or R33 GTS-T’s.

This is one of your most poetic videos yet. It is sad that the number of exciting new cars is getting smaller each year, that’s unquestionable. But the car culture that existed these past few decades will be kept alive by the current generation. It will die when we die. There are still loads of cool used cars around. I’m having more fun driving older cars in 2023 than I’d probably have if they were new. There’s appeal in scarcity, there a more tight knit car community than ever, repair tutorials and online order parts, and upgrades.

Just a note, the Honda Preludes mechanical 4WS that owners kept was on the 80s model (as described in the video) but the 90's models from the era of this car had electronic 4WS which most owners eventually disabled. Back in the late 2000s it was standard advice given to new owners of used 4th/5th gen Preludes as the electronic 4WS ECUs/systems were starting to fail due to age and the crashes caused by it were racking up.

Just wanted to mention, these GTS-Ts are quite fine cars to daily drive too. Parts are sadly getting rarer by the day, but keep up with typical maintenance & don’t thrash them around 24/7, they’ll keep going for a really long time. I’ve got 220,000 miles on my ‘91 GTS-T, on my 7th year owning it, & had nothing more serious than a fuel pump leave me stranded. I hope whoever wins this one will enjoy it instead of leaving it in a garage.

This is an amazing review , diving deep into what this car actually means These cars appeal to me due to the aforementioned feeling of nostalgia. For me it's conceived nostalgia I haven't even ever experienced. These cars are almost a portal into the past yet are somewhat quite mundane and ordinary. Without the engine in this car it's just a slightly more than average late 80s-90s car and that is non more evident in the sedans, yet to me this car stands for more than just it's engine , I see it as a time when people cared about their craft, the skyline of the 80s and 90s excites my love for attention to detail, these cars are a piece of art in their own way Even though realistically they're just a rwd Altima

Amazing review! In your element of course. Nice Motocompacto shoutout 😎 I’m surprised you are interested. Ironically, it’s top speed is actually lesss than the 35 year old motocompo. I think anything over 20mph is classified as a motorcycle for tax reasons.

turbo'd non-GTR skylines are an incredible driver's car. i daily drive an R33 GTS25t w/ the RB25DET that i've put some good time into cleaning up and it doesn't compare to any other driving experience i've ever had. these cars are damn fun, and when well taken care of are as reliable as any other nice straight 6 from the era. it's a car that speaks for itself, so keeping it stock is the path i'm taking -- i've become so obsessed with the car's history that i have the dealer brochure for the car in the seat for car shows!

R32 owner here. I cringed everytime he said "2018" for the legal year-this generation started in 1989, so they were legal all the way back in 2014. In my rural Wisconsin town, there was one since 2015, also a 1989 like mine. Bought mine in 2019, with average miles (174K kilometers), no rust, a few mods like GT-R seats (stocks are trash), ISR exhaust, coilovers, and R33 GT-R wheels. Paid just under 13K, a car like mine is probably 24-27K now. It's wonderful to drive. 2800 lbs, same as the 86 twins. Next to no turbo lag with very short gearing (2900 RPM at 60!). Both feels and is quick, especially for a 2 liter. Corners like it's on rails with the big 17s, the LSD is very tight, so breaking traction is easy. It feels like a dainty sports car, not a big, heavy Grand Tourer like a 3G Supra or Z31 300ZX (I've owned both). The best part? It doesn't feel 35 years old. The gearbox is the only thing that dates it, but it feels way newer than other cars I've owned from that era. Part of the reason I bought it was the mystique and reputation of the R32 (it's also objectively a great looking design). It also checks all the boxes of a fun to drive, powerful, RWD, manual, with the bonus of a 2+2 with a big trunk. Basically a Japanese E36 M3. Problem areas? Oil pump is the big one-the screws that hold it together were never lock-tite'd properly from factory. They don't cool well, but the entire cooling system as well as the oil pump were new when I bought it, so I've had no problems with either. The HICAS stopped working years ago, and the electronic climate control never worked all that well. Oh yeah, the clutch fork pivot failed, and took out the slave cylinder and the master cylinder, so those are all new. 1st gear syncro has always been dead but the rest are good. Several states including Maine, Pennsylvania, and Georgia are changing the legal status of imported JDM cars, by denying new yearly registrations. Very terrible stuff, makes my blood boil.

A close friend of mine had a bone stock 89 gtst painted calsonic blue. Had the honor of doing the catback install with him in my garage. These cars are stunning in person, but I cant justify the prices on these cars in the states at all anymore. People forget the skylines were economy sedans.

As someone who couldn’t afford a skyline a strong contender is the Nissan Laurel. I got a 97 C35 which is based on the R34 chassis. No manual option but an RB25 Neo makes up for it ❤

If I knew nothing else anpit you, that alpne makes you worthy of my Respect. For the best qay to see a man's true self, one looks at his actions, not his words. Especially how he trests those under his position, or that offer nothing to him. Thank you for being who you are

2023 sees the end of my dream Kia Stinger, it's the only new car I really want. No pay to use features, turbos and all wheel drive everywhere. There is a part of me that wants 2023 to be the newest year of car I ever buy.

Historic car, but I'll keep my (cheaper and undervalued) Z4 3.5i turbo. More displacement, more horsepower, better looking, convertible, no annoying turbo/blowoff whine, and somehow (despite being BMW) easier to source parts. The stunning thing though I just learned though is the Skyline is lighter! WTF?... like a LOT lighter Which by the way, I'll drive to PA (where I grew up) for you to review my car darnit! Biggest thing I realized w/ mine was it was the only car that could make me switch to dual clutch. Blasphemy, yes, but hit the right buttons and go to the right mode and it's bliss compared to my older 335i 6-speed.

Back in the 90s, my grandparents were complaining about how all the new cars looked the same and were "made of plastic" implying that they were low effort. They would've hated this car. In fact, grandma is still alive and still Catholic disappointed that I don't own a Chevrolet like my 57 year old cousin once removed.
