Gail Devers all the way baby! Not only possibly the best combination sprinter/hurdler in track and field history but a great person as well. Congrats and blessings to Gail.. came back at 40, less than a year after having a child and blew away a world class field in the 60m hurdles in February at the Millrose Games!

Irina Privalova was always great in the first 50m. Too bad she couldn't maintain that speed until the end of her races. She was always a 2-4 finisher, usually getting passed in the last 20m or so. But still, I like her looong strides and she never quit on a race.
@drtslim2 жыл бұрын
What I surmise is that she had a quick reaction, but her top-end speed wasn't as fast as some of the other top runners as they would catch her once they reached their top speed closer to the end of the race.

at :21, Ottey kicked into a higher gear and started flying. If only she had another half meter...

I'm an American and my loyalty lies with the Ashfords, Flojos, Torrences, Devers and Jones. But because Ottey didn't win many championships, shouldn't negate her greatness. She was around and competing well through the runs of all of the greats that I just mentioned. She clearly had a love for the sport. the fact that she competed for so long and was still at the top HAS to account for something. No?

stop hating.. devers won.. and she is still running... she was the fastest in the 60m hurdles in 2007.. that was amazing..

Its strange to me that Privalova was the best 60m runner and best 400m runner but always lost out in the 100 and 200 in the final stages to either ottey, devers or torrence.

Which is why the 60m should be an Olympic event because it tests different skill

A scientist who handled the 1999 drug test for Jamacian sprinter Merlene Ottey says a mistake was made clearing the runner of a positive test. "The sample shouldn't have been corrected at all",said Christaine Ayotte, the head of the lab in Montreal where the testing was carried out. "And when they did, they used the wrong formula. It was a very stupid mistake. They turned it upside down. The problem is that no one from the IAAF side was able to correct this formula during Arbitration.....

At :21 Gwen Torrence briefly had the lead. Had Ottey had a better start she may have won. I know, it's all in the past. Just an observation.

From what I can see, Devers just barely dipped ahead of Ottey but I think Ottey is the better athlete.
@Aarontlondon17 жыл бұрын
Gail Devers is and was NOT a better athlete than Ottey ever! Devers may have been lucky to perform adequately at major championships, but Ottey has been much more celebrated, won many more accolades, and medals and has had far more achievements than Devers has had.
@RelicHunter32115 жыл бұрын
what you may need to take into account that for both of these races, the results were subjective. In other words, human judged who they felt was the winner, and in all honesty, the officials were biased for the Americans. I believe that Devers won in 1996, but Ottey clearly on here.
@Ras09true14 жыл бұрын
Ottey won,a similar thing occurred in 07 with VCB, lwIlliams, Vcb won, so Ottey won here.It's torso first. By the way don't talk crap About Ottey using drugs, if you know track you would notice that Ottey was one if not the most consistent female sprinters in terms of times in both 1 and 2, just like how Asafa times are consistent. Not like some who only ran fast in final. Even after the drug allegation her times never faltered, she ran at Olympics in her 40s
@CHEETAH6915 жыл бұрын
I didn't make a judgement on this race. I was responding to someone who basically was making a joke out of Ottey's long career. But, I don't know how the officials could have been "biased" towards anyone. Why would they be more so for Devers and not Ottey? And to say that Ottey "clearly" won, is more than a bit of a stretch. No one CLEARLY won this race. Hence, the controversy 16 years later.

Merlene got that ruling overturned because her sample at the lab in Lucerne hadn't been handled properly and so was able to compete in 2000. Merlene was well able to hold her own against those East German "Women" who are now probably either crippled or ill due to the chemicals and steroids they were ingesting. Don't know where you got your info but here are Otteys head to heads against them - vs Koch 0-7, vs Silke Gladisch Möller 5-4, vs Heike Daute Drechsler 6-4 and vs Krabbe 10-2.
@CHEETAH6915 жыл бұрын
Where was that American influence when Privalova nipped Devers for the 4x100 at this same championship? Or how about when Gwen Torrence stepped on the line and lost the gold in the 200 in 95? There's no bias. It was just a close race. Ottey lost.
@xidiamond68515 ай бұрын
Devers was the queen of the lean. If ottey leaned she would have won more races
@RelicHunter32115 жыл бұрын
There's ALWAYS bias when it comes to human subjectivity, with the most powerful and influential coming out on top. Few instances of the contrary doesn't disprove or erode this fact. If u don't know that, then you're definitely not as smart as I initially thought.

Ottey may have got the charges dismissed on techicalities- but she is not clean and never was, and after the fact the IAAF and CAS realized their mistake, but they had already ruled... thus WADDA was formed... she is dirty

You use ONE example of an American getting the better outcome as proof that there was a clear bias shone . You ask 12 people who viewed the race what they saw and I can guarantee that you won't get a concensus. It's just the way it is sometimes. Did Ottey get to the tape first? It didn't look that way to me. And I'm gonna ask that you chill with even the hint of questioning my intelligence. That's a slippery slope to something, I think, neither of us logged onto this site for.

Actually Ottey holds the record for most World Championship medals as well as most Olympic track medals by a female athlete and I would think that, yes, she is more celebrated than Devers especially in Europe which is the home of track and field. Need I remind you also of the fact that Krabbe was a drug cheat
