What gets lost in this game is that if Mitch Williams retires Joe Carter, Game 7 is practically assured. Why? With 2 outs, Alfredo Griffin would've been the batter as he ran for Olerud one inning prior. The Jays' bench was a bunch of Maytag Repairmen during the season, and Mitch Williams likely gets Griffin to send it to a 7th game. Thus, Molitor's hit was pivotal. If Mitch got Molitor, you'd likely see an intentional walk to Carter even if Rickey was on first base, because you don't let the MLB RBI leader from 1986-'93 beat you. With one out and two on, Williams had to pitch to Joe, as if he walked him and then got Griffin (or another pinch-hitter) for out #2, he still would've faced Roberto Alomar, and anything could've happened. But one bad slider to Carter, and we'll let the pictures speak for itself.

It still makes me sick as a Phillies fan, seeing Joe Carter's home run. This was also the last MLB game to be broadcast on CBS. Also the last championship final that Sean McDonough would call until the 2022 Stanley Cup Finals on ABC.

3:28:52: what in the world is Tim McCarver talking about? Once a tool, always a tool. This chump should have retired years ago.
@nflmlbclassics8 жыл бұрын
I think that Tim was talking about the fact the Phillies' fans were afraid of seeing them blow the 6-5 lead--and as it turned out, we know how this turned out.
@LexTan7 жыл бұрын
McCarver mentioned this because the Philly fans and some players, notably Curt Schilling, had a habit of either covering their heads with a towel, not watching the game play, while Mitch Williams was on the mound. It was most prevalent in the MLB Postseason, when everything is magnified. Even as a Blue Jays fan, I felt it was kind of cruel for the fans and players to do that to Mitch, especially in the postseason. Pitching in that situation is pretty high stress as it is. Also, Mitch saved 40+ games for the Phillies in the regular season, and even got the save to clinch the NL Pennant that year. The worst time to fail is definitely the postseason, but Fregosi even said that without Mitch, Philly wouldn't have gotten to the WS.
