I enjoyed watching your passionately, enthusiastic, detailed obsession with fixing up the ZJ. That's in my lane of thinking! I've driven Jeeps all my life starting with my Grandparents '51 Willys flathead Station Wagon with the 3 levered granny gears to high school in the early 70's. I've owned a CJ-5 V6 , many XJ's (2/4 door & manual/auto trans), a Commando v-6, M38A1 F-head and several ZJ's and I have personally modified according to my vision. Currently my everyday driver is a '96 ZJ with the 5.2 V8. I bought it from one owner in '06 with 89k miles on it and have always meticulously maintained it. I did a custom plaid kilt looking headliner that matches my Flame Red exterior with the grey/black trim and installed a 2" lift boost w/15 x 9.5 Yokohama A/T's. It has 142k miles on it now and still runs fantastic. I also had a '94 Rare Wagoneer ZJ V-8 before acquiring this Laredo (maybe I should have kept it). Anyways, I'm older now and content with what I have. The simplicity suits my character compared to new vehicles telling you what to do all the time...lol.

We’ve owned 5 different ZJs beginning in 1994. After Christmas just sent USMC son back to base in the 2013 Grand I bought new a decade ago in return for the 1998 ZJ he has been driving since getting his license 5 years ago. I have SUCH an affinity for the ZJ and plan to use the ‘98 myself as daily driver. I way prefer these older units over the modern pushbutton nonsense of new vehicles. Dirtbag simple and bulletproof machines to scoot around in. BTW…3 of the 5 ZJs we’ve owned over the years, 3 of them are still in regular service, one mostly dedicated to hard-core Offroad. These old units are great for beating the nasty annual Indiana vehicle excise tax and insurance is also inexpensive. There were sooo many of the ZJs built it makes parts readily available at reasonable prices. They work well for carrying stuff around and do fine for light towing. Just a great all-around vehicle and terrific on snow with the manual transfer cases. And….if somebody clips you at a red light, just go find another one for $2-5K and run through the laundry-list of ‘known / common issues’ and your back up and running with spare parts. All the best for your flying. We are also aviators so any longer trips are by air rather than highway thus we don’t put many miles on our ‘fleet’ of older vehicles. Please reach out if I can be useful to your aviation journey as I was in your spot a dozen years ago.

The viscous coupling in the transfer case will probably seize up when it gets hot from driving a while and you won't have any differential action between the front and back axles and will force the tires to bind up when you turn sharply

I always buy cars with bad tranny's. Really cheap. Then I replace it myself, drive it for 3 to 5 years. Sell it when I get tired of driving it. Last one I bought was a pretty nice 96 ZJ 5.2L. It's in really good condition with just under 150k on the clock. The previous owner just replaced a bunch of stuff. Both front CV axles, brakes at all 4 corners, some decent off road tires. It also came with a pile of brand new parts in the back. Nex suspension arms with new bushings, 2 inch leveling kit and new Rough Country shocks and adjustable front and rear track bars and a 242 transfer case. And then the transmission went titties up. He got frustrated and sold it to me for $1000. I bought a rebuilt transmission with a 3yr warranty at Auto Zone. Had to wait 5 weeks for that to get here. Took me 3 weekends to swap out swap in the new parts. Now it drives like it's brand new. And I don't have a car payment. There's some really good deals on Offer Up. The guy was originally trying to sell it for $3100 ,but he was trying to sell it for about 6 weeks and nobody would buy it because he didn't even say it was a basket case. And he advertised it as already having the 242 swap. I did have to get the drive shaft shortened a few inches after I swapped out the 249 TC for the 242. I would have swapped in a 231 transfer case, but I already had the 242 and it was rebuilt sometime in the past. I took the cover off and everything was still in good shape. So I decided to just use it. It gets about 14 city/20ish freeway. I wish it got better mileage but you can't have everything. 😆 mine is Silver metallic glow pearl paint code PW4. I've had it all back together since March. Ive already had 4 offers on it just driving around running errands, and from people at work. I don't want to sell this one. Ive been driving it around making sure it's reliable. I like this ZJ. I think I'm gonna keep this one and sell my 93 Explorer Sport. The transmission and transfer case is not that hard to replace in these ZJ's or XJ's. You just need basic hand tools,2 3 ton jacks,a transmission Jack and a concrete patio. I replaced it myself in less than 2 days.
