I love these rare 5.9 liter Jeep Grand Cherokees. In the late 90s, they were the fastest SUVs in the world and started the performance SUV market we see today. I bought this one from an auction after its previous owner abandoned it for over 5 years. In this video, I bring it back to life in a fast-paced complete mechanical and cosmetic transformation. Grab that cold pop and enjoy!

That video still haunts me to this day. Only about 10,000 of these were ever made. I ran mine to 235,000 miles before the transmission gave out. I wouldn't sell it to anyone who just wanted it as a sweet parts car for their 5.2 limited. I eventually sold it to a wealthy family who wanted to recondition/restore it.

can you remove the seat cover to re-sew it? Should be easier than sewing with it attached to the seat foam.
@markbennett6658

It’s pretty easy on a later WJ as I recollect. I had them off mine to replace the seat heater element. Jeep did a repair pad that you just put between the foam and the cover and plugged into the existing wiring. It would be easy to re-sew the seam from the inside with the cover off

I needed something to get through a bad Detroit winter 5yrs ago so I bought a JGC off my friend for cheap thinking it had the 5.2... Went to fill up and noticed it needed premium, that is when I realized what I had scored, the 5.9! What a powerhouse for that size of SUV. 9mpg and didn't care. Had to get rid of it that spring after finding out it needed a whole new transfer case along with a slew of random electrical issues... miss that car. Great job on this one!

I gotta say, if you remove the seat covering and buy a 20 dollar sewing awl that seat could be done in under an hour. Doing it with the seat in the car you really do need an awl to make the hole then put the needle through. Piliars and curved needle is a nightmare. Props to your wife for sewing as much as she did.

Got a junkyard rear bumper and fender, painted and clearcoated them, drain and fill on rear diff and trans, going through engine, had heads rebuilt (4.7L), replaced oil pump, timing chain set, water pump, various sensors, hoses...still not done, but looking forward to a pretty pristine SUV once I am done. Man, this has me reminiscing like crazy. My very first car back in 2006 was a black ‘98 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 Limited, and had the black/tweed cloth, and the wood grain trim hah I ended up getting a 5” pro comp suspension lift, some chrome American Racing off road steelies wrapped in some Terra Grapplers, a magnaflow exhaust, a K&N intake, a Yakima roof basket, and of course being a 16yo kid I had to throw a JBL 10” sub in a ported box in the back, all JBL door speakers/tweeters, and a gaudy Kenwood color changing headunit that came with the worlds most pointless little remote 😂 god I miss that jeep so much. For being a ‘98 I’m still blown away by how ahead of its time it was. Everything was electric, and the roof console setup and screen display it had was incredible. Could change it from a compass & ambient temp, to digital clock, to gps coordinates, to avg mpg, to gallons left in the tank, to your estimated remaining range, and even your travel time. I would LOVE to get into another one some day and do a nostalgia build making it exactly like I had mine back then.

My dad bought a white 5.9 almost brand new. We towed our four wheelers and went on many trips. That think was an absolute joy to floor from a dead stop, getting up to speed entering a highway, or when trying to get out in front of some traffic! 😁 I remember getting a super cars book in school and seeing our jeep being in it and thinking that was so cool! The 12 miles to the gallon gas mileage was horrendous though, I guess it cost to have fun though. 😎

This came out great! I'm really glad you saved this. I love these ZJ's, especially the 5.9. I had a 97 ZJ up until 2013, I still miss it. It was a great vehicle, unfortunately New England rust had taken over. I owned it for about 12 years, it was always a great vehicle and never left me stranded. And you are 100% correct that they have amazing seats!

The 5.9 limited had even better seats. They were covered in soft calfskin leather.

Finally you are back to origins. No more "youtuber" videos with visits to friends and car lots, and more of these amazing restoration videos which was why I subscribed in the first place. Great job!!

Man, Glad to live in the south after seeing some of that crust! I look under my 08 with 240K on it and barely an surface rust! I'd have likely sent it with some new calipers!

My friend in high school, his grandfather had one that looked just like this. In Brainerd Minnesota funny enough. The moment I saw it I wondered if it was his old Jeep. I would love nothing less than to bring it back home where it belongs.

I like this kind of "restore" better than some others I've seen. It really goes into the nuts and bolts that any moderately knowledgeable guy can do. Diagnostic on the reasons it would not start and then ran rough was cool. I learned a lot.

Thanks for all the tips...I've had my 5.9 in the barn since the VC went out in the tcase. Swapping in a 242....a tip on those bleeders..grab a couple birthday candles, heat up that bleeder (or any corroded thread) press that candle into the threads like you were sweating copper pipe....let it cool...now loosen it. Only need a little, don't want a wax ball in your caliper

This is a great SUV. I grew up riding in one my grandfather had in the mountains of NC. He handed it down to my dad and we drove it a while until my brother flipped it down a ravine. These are amazingly safe as he came out of that crash without a scratch. I would love to have one of these and do what you did to save one from the scrap yard. Good work.

i wonder how many hours you have into this project, much less the sweat and toil and sore muscles. You worked your ass off to show us all this in 40 minutes and I thank you for that. It also helps me understand why I am a fanatic about keeping my car clean and detailed because it is so much less work to do a couple hours a month and have it look new.
