I lucked into a new Peavey Predator back in the Nineties. I don't need a Strat. Most cost effective guitar purchase I ever made.

My very first electric was a predator black body white pick guard. I got it in 1995 along with rage 158 amp....it changed my life so I'll always have a soft spot for it.

I just picked up a 94 usa predator for £20. Good grief, it has micro tilt! Good body weight. Neck is perfect to play, very slim and slinky. Bargin of the year.

i love the old American made predators. The only thing i found lacking on mine was the slightly harsh ceramic pickups. 30 bucks on ebay for some alnicos fixed that up.

I just was given a late 90’s Predator International. Metallic blue finish, HSS with tremolo. Decided to redo it to a Strat configuration that would improve the guitar. Removed the tremolo, springs and claw and the Humbucker. Ordered a set of Alinco SSS pups and made a new pick guard from scratch since the Strat Guard is not the same hole pattern and shape. Filled the back and tremolo cavities and converted the guitar to a hardtail. Amazing transformation. Still brighter in the #1 and 2 positions than a Strat. The guitar has the Strat quack and plays really nice...

superb demonstration! I have a peavey predator 93 and a stratocaster 64L, I'm a bad guitarist 😁 the peavey is very cool, easy to play. the stratocaster is great, between hands bonned we take the ears!

Thank you for taking the time to do a good review comparison , very helpful . I really like "Strat" style guitars and tend towards the lower cost versions. I've owned 5-6 American made Fenders but in the end I have gotten rid of them. Now the owner of a few MIM,MIK,MIC "Strat-ish" style. I have been hot and cold for a Peavey and I think your video sold me......again thanks.

I just bought one for 60 bucks that's beat all to hell, havent got to plug it in but i can tell the neck plays effretlessly. Paud 60 bucks probly gonna take off the spraypaint black and bring it to just woodgrain, and new tuners.

I like a lot of the older Peavey USA gear, I have a Predator, a Reactor, & a Foundation. My understanding is with some models "handcrafted in the USA" was misleading, to say the least, because Peavey bought loaded pickguards from overseas and installed them in the US.

The Am Strat has a bit more sparkle and clearer tones. A pickup change in the Peavey with fix that. I owned a Predator back in the late 90s. I put a set of 1996 Fender American Strat pickups in it, blocked the trem and it became my #1 for a little while.

Nice demo. Useful to me because I have the chance to buy a Peavey. In the comparison I liked the Fender better because it has better mid and low range but that´s just my impression. I still like the Predator very much, with a vibe of its own, and I can get it at half the price in my country than an American Fender. Sorry I can´t bid on yours because of import restrictions.

+hocuspocusjokerride I've owned many guitars and the one I'll never sell and the best playing one is the peavey predator. I have a peavey reactor on it's way in the mail to me right now. It's the telecaster version. I hope the neck feels exactly like the predator.

That's what I want to know..... the sound doesn't matter to me that much, because as long as the pickups and electronics are decent, I can process the sound into whatever I want..... it's the way that it feels in my hand and the action that matters to me....

I have had a 94 Peavey Predator strat clone since it was new. The body is Poplar with ceramic pickups. Just picked up a new Fender Player strat as well. Love them both. I can take the Peavey with me camping nd don't have to worry about it.

Update : My Predator now has Hipshot locking tuners, Graphtec nut, Rose Robusta alnico 5 pickups and an Obsidian Blender installed. Think I will keep it...

Seemed like the neck and maybe middle pickup on the Peavey were sunken down way low compared to how I have my USA Predator setup and compared to the ones on the Strat. Both great guitars just thought that bore pointing out as far as tone it does make a big difference.

the only thing you could possibly bitch about the peavy is the ceramic pickups, but thats really just a matter of tweaking the eq on the amp to compensate the good thing about ceramic pups is they dont de- gauss

I picked up a Peavey Strat on craigslist for 50 bucks. I don’t think it was a USA model but it looks like this one The fret ends we’re lethal sharp.. it took me hours to file them down. The neck Is set crooked.. I loosened the four screws holding the neck on and pulled on the headstock sideways, then I re-tightened the screws. The strings still leave the night and go to the bridge at an angle were the first string wants to go off of the fretboard. I may have to reset the location of the bridge to fix this, if it can be fixed.. I bought the guitar for my five year old grandson to hammer on when he comes over to visit to keep my Les Paul and my Stratocaster out of his hands until he’s old enough..

Peavey Predators had two styles necks. The one you have is a late model with a maple cap fretboard. The earlier ones were split down the middle to insert the truss rod like a G&L. They have that big ugly (IMHO) black truss rod cover. It would be interesting to find out who came up first with the bycut neck, Leo Fender or Hartley Peavey. I have three Predators. One has DiMarzio Virtual Vintage pickups, one is stock, one I stripped the paint off of (was in bad shape) and will get a Lace sensor Hot Gold pups. When I took the paint off I found out that the body is alder, has six pieces with top and bottom laminates.On the one with Dimarzio pickups found the bridge is upgraded with a Callaham tremolo block and saddles. The ones for a Fender MIM strat fit perfectly. I also installed Sperzel tuners and it is the best sounding guitar I own, bar none.

It depends on condition. The real old ones with the the script logo are cool. If you can find something besides black buy it. I prefer the ones that don't have the big black truss rod cover, but you can always make one from thin maple or tan plastic. The electronics should be the same.

Long shot since this was 10 years ago. I just picked up a 1995 for my daughter. I can’t test much as I’m a lefty (she write and eats lefty but throws righty so we are trying out righty). I want to take this and make it a great guitar. If I want a better bridge (or block and saddles), pickups and tuners what are good choices? And in terms of bridge and tuners what could I just drop in the would fit? Hail Mary…see if I get some answers thanks.

Why did I sell my old Strat ? ...... I prefer the sound of the Peavey, cause the Fender Strats have a sludgy sound. On the contrary, the sound of the Peavey is a bit sharper but more precise and neat.

Predator lows sound a tad muffled. on neck and middle pick ups. Otherwise I think the Predator sounds better then the strat.

Are these original Peavey pickups? I've never seen those pickups. The don't look like Peavey. If they were change, then the rest of electronics may have been changed as well.

Hey Kent, the pickups are original to the guitar. They are not ceramic, as one comment states below. They have non-staggered AlNiCo rod pole pieces - I'm not sure if they are 5 or 3, but definitely not 2. I just added the red & blue pu covers and knobs. I do believe everything is stock, based on other Peaveys I've owned from that era of production.

Well for one that is not a stock Peavey Predator. The predator comes with 2 humbuckers and a single coil and a switch over to choose between the 5 different coils.

Cheap guitar, better pickups > expensive guitar and stock pickups. Cheap guitar with upgraded pickups and a good amp > expensive guitsr with stock pickups and cheap amp.
