I live in Italy and in '94 I was 11 and it was difficult for me to even grab a basic deck. It was cool also because it was already a scarce resource. When my father came back home in the evening and gave me my first deck, I remember I didn't know how to play but man I was already hooked. It all looked authentic and "old" even back in the day. The artwork wasn't silly, yet it wasn't aiming to photorealism too. The aesthetic of the whole card looked simple for the eye and for the mind to parse and enjoy. Also the cards weren't that many. I remember that when Legends came out I was able to read a listing and fall in love with each and every one of them. And I was also able to look back at the previous expansions and hope to collect them all. Fast-forward to today, 24 years of expansions that diluted the value of the cards as something you seek to own. In my eyes I see 2 decades of (mostly) worthless cards. I still want to love the game but nothing tops the emotion of opening a Fallen Empires, Dark, Ice Age, Homelands and Legends booster pack. Not now but even back in the day.

At the time I was 3 yo, so I don't know that feel. But a thing isn't change in Italy: it isn't easy to find Mtg products in stores: there are a lot more Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokémon products in lgs than Mtg... 😅 😂

@R G The game is still good, I agree. 🙂 I compared the emotions I got from "living" the game back in 1994-1996 and now. Nowadays it's just different (also because I'm a different person, of course) and the value of the old sets is indeed greater than the new ones, especially for the people like me that started MTG in those days. And, obviously, mine is a nostalgic take.

That was a fun opening for nostalgic purposes. The artwork was really crafted on these cards before true Digital Technology really streamlined things. So the main reason these look older is because the technology used at the time wasn't able to do the things we can in today's graphic design world. Printing was a little more cumbersome back in the day too. Overall just a fun throw back!

I love The Dark, have a complete set and several extra Reserved List picks stashed away. I think The Dark is one of the most underpriced sets in MtG. I believe the market got it wrong with The Dark and when it spikes it will be legendary.

Been playing a little game of my own tonight. Kids can either have candy or a pack of Pokémon cards. Surprising results so far stay tuned for a update. Update* Results are in only had about 20 kids come by only went through 7 packs. I live in a poorer neighborhood and wanted to give the kids that didn’t go to the suburbs something shiny and special. The Dark is such a fantastic set! Jesper Myrfors did such a good job as an art director and your first pull is actually one of my favourite cards of the set. Together with Preacher they are both white cards with a blue ability. I wonder how that came to be 🤔 Giant Shark works great with Prodigal Sorcerer btw 😂

Match that War Barge w/ that Merfolk Assassin, it only costs you 3 mana and a tapped creature to kill any other creature on the board. My favorite classic combo.

I think what it is about those old cars is it still feels looks like the era. Early magic cards were a product of their era. The art wasn’t digitally perfected in big resolutions, It’s the art that’s hard to figure out sometimes, and all these fairly different styles coming together. What would be a representative art of the name in some wild depiction is now just a screenshot from a movie. I see these cards I can hear the Iron Maiden playing

The Dark was so fun to open. I loved those cards and the novel Gathering Dark was amazing. Out of all the novel cycles that one was my favorite. Jeff Grubb is an incredible author.

I know what you mean about the feeling these cards give when it comes for the artwork. The illustrations were hand-drawn masterpieces, not computer generated digital paintings. The old borders were so amazing and fit for the old school artwork. It kind of shows with the Time Spiral Remastered old-bordered cards how much better they look in those variants. Especially the bronze artifact borders.

All this beautiful artwork they have now, but those old cards...some of them were just above original D&D monster manuals in quality but it was just so much cooler.

The style guide makes all the art look the same within each set, especially with pretty much all art being done digitally now. You just don't get any of the "wtf am I looking at" art anymore.

Boomerang, capsize or use Umbilicus the War Barge to return it to your hand, after giving your opponent's creatures islandwalk, they get buried. Basically force them on the barge and sink the barge to drown them.

Totally agree about the old art. There's something about it that feels "arcane" I guess, or old but in a good way. The classic MTG art falls in two categories imo - stuff you'd see out of an old fairytale book, or something printed on the side of my uncle's (the one with the mullet and shades) van. Haven't opened a pack of The Dark since 97, when I infected 3 flatmates and 6 of their friends with the game... My group of players were so popular that the guy from the local card shop would come play at our place on Friday nights...

My gosh, can someone plase start a petition for Wazzys making the old frames the new standart again? This looks so fucking dope, even completely dull artwork looks completely insane. Where is this old, dirty, grim dark athomsphere on modern cards that have borders where you think they have been designed in a goddamn modern art gallery. Would make me collect every complete set again and losing my mind over fucking commons.. But it seems I am only a grumpy old man.. But it makes me sad when I see the few modern Old School Frame Cards they released and thinking to myself how you would not want to produce the whole set of lets say Return to return to the end of the return to Innistrad in these classic borders. You can smell the theme through a fricking Screen with these borders instead of these dull modern borders having even more dull and CGI-ish graphics. Guess thats why im dumping thousands of Euros lately in Complete sets of old frame editions *sips from his Dalwhinnie and whipes off a tear or two*

The old Magic cards had much more subjective art. There are many amazing illustrators in Magic nowadays, but look like they don't have the space to be subtle, with all the objective guidelines they get.
