Steve, loving this content. I had an old XJ jeep years ago and did a similar thing. Cheap car, relatively easy repairs and I’m no mechanic.It got frustrating at times however was so rewarding because I learnt so much and I could see the outcomes of my hard work. Keep it coming it will be so worth it

With that much rust on the fuel sender unit, it looks like its been a long time since that 80 has seen a full tank. Late last year my '96 80 Series (1FZ-FE) developed a rough idle. It turned out to be an air intake hose leak past the MAF sensor. Giving the engine inconsistent air/fuel mix ratio. You're a brave man tackling the helicoil yourself with no experience. Kudos. ✊
@Australian4x4Adventures7 ай бұрын
Well technically I stuffed up the helicoil install but ya have to learn somehow I guess haha. I’m currently taking it all apart again to fix the helicoil. ( again )
@magicalvortex7 ай бұрын
Next time you make a tool for fitting helicoils magnetize the tip of the tool. Make sure the steel is magnetic and either fit a solenoid over the tip or wrap plenty of insulated wire around the tip and shaft and connect it to a battery to arrange the domain structure of the tool/steel and make it magnetic. Let it go for some time and it will magnetize the tip, that way when your ready to use the tool it will stick better and when you reverse it to snap off the tail piece of the helicoil there's less chance of it dropping in the chamber and even if it does, you have a long magnetic tip to fish it out, just make sure the piston is up on the chamber your working on to make it easier to fish out if it does.

That fuel tank has had a gut full of water sitting in it , drop it and flush it out Steve otherwise the work you did on the engine will be wasted with all that crap running through the engine . Well done on giving it a go bro 😎 👍🍻

You should just put the helicoil on the plug, like it came out. Your endeavor with this challenge is inspiring.
@Australian4x4Adventures7 ай бұрын
As much as I would love to do that it unfortunately doesn’t work. The helicoil is like a spring and as you put it in it needs to be stretched so it goes in every second thread which allows the spark plug to go back in. It’s a right pain 😂
@frednurks85287 ай бұрын
@@Australian4x4Adventures I’m not sure what you mean by stretching. A helicoil is made to suit the thread form that you are trying to repair. The helicoil fills the gap between the larger diameter hole that is drilled and tapped with a thread that is equivalent to the smaller diameter original thread that you are trying to replicate. You cannot just skip threads like you have described. When you buy a kit you must know what thread the original is. That is: you don’t buy a whitworth if you are trying to repair a NPT. Is it metric or is it imperial thread. Being Toyota it is probably metric.

the trick is to fill the groove in the end of the heli-coil tool with grease to hold the tag the you break it off.....

@@Australian4x4Adventures also…to get the broken bit out….use your air blower with a long tip stuck down in the cylinder and it should blow it out the hole….
@Ovaworked4x47 ай бұрын
Helicoils don't really like to be undone. Count the threads and wind it in that many turns. As for breaking off the end and retaining it, put some duct tape on the end sticky side out and when it's wound all the way in just give the tool a sharp hit to snap off the tab. Hopefully the tab stays stuck to the tape. As for that fuel tank, it definitely needs to be cleaned and if it's rusted then it will need to be properly repaired. I know the budget is tight but would a long range tank be an option?
