I've read that the discontinuation of Cadillac's "commercial chassis", which used to be used for ambulances, hearses, and in some cases, vehicles that served both duties, decimated the conversion business in the late 1970s, with some coach builders adapting by cutting up sedan bodies and others going out of business. It seems they added maybe a foot and a half to that car in the conversion and I'm surprised they needed to, since I'd expect a coffin to fit in a standard station wagon with the seats down, not that I've tried any coffins out for size lately. That's a cool car. I wonder how hard it would be to turn it into a limousine/party wagon for weddings and proms.

I don't understand why Cadillac never made a station wagon until 2010. B/D bodies look even better as wagons. I want to take a 90s Buick Roadmaster wagon and combine it with a Fleetwood to make the car Cadillac never made.

@pcno28323 жыл бұрын
It's probably that station wagons, hatchbacks and vans are inherently a little noisier and more prone to creeks and rattles than proper sedans and Cadillac was more obsessed with silence in the old days than they are now. Cadillac did offer some customized versions of their cars over the years, including a 4-door convertible and an El Camino style pickup, so there might have been a wagon offered at one time or another. A wagon would offer a big advantage in the case of a limousine, with the extra space for 9 passengers worth of luggage.

One coach builder in the 90s did just this, but probably inversely to how you described it. There are some 90s "Buiack" hearses out there with a roadmaster front clip but Cadillac Hearse style rear clip. I think they were Roadmaster Wagon based. I saw one in a parking lot on the North side of Chicago maybe 6 months ago

Beautiful car. Glad you got to review this one. Some of the last hand-built cars on the planet. I know most hearse owners don't, but imagine pulling the casket table and putting some nice plush seats back there. Minivan? Nah, I'll drive one of these. I like them all, to one degree or another, but there's just something about the 60s and earlier Cadillac hearses that are just beautiful to me. Having said that, Lincoln did a nice job with theirs, too.

I own a 1996 Federal Coach Renaissance hearse. It's the same as the 95 you review here. I have had it over 10 years. I should replace it with a much newer one, but it is such a good looking, solid, heavy,dependable car, that I don't want to.

hey i just bought a hearrse just like the one reviewed here, what air pressure to you keep you tires and what brand do you use?
@jimstevens17262 жыл бұрын
@@jojojojo5353 jo, I bought 4 new tires 2 years ago. They are, Hankook Optimo- H 724. I inflate them to 40lbs as per specs on the door sticker. They are very good tires at a fair price and a lot of hearses are using this brand tire. You MUST use EXTRA LOAD tires on your hearse. Do not buy regular passenger car tires. I was driving a hearse years ago that the funeral home put standard tires on. I took a sharp turn at 45mph and one of the rear tires rolled right off the rim and blew. They were new tires, but they were not extra load! The hearses are too heavy for standard load tires. Good luck with your hearse.
@jojojojo53532 жыл бұрын
@@jimstevens1726 thanks for the response Jim, i have the Optimo Hankooks on it now, i think i will get 4 new ones to be on the safe side and yes i know about the heavy load requirements, this beast weighs hundreds of pounds more than my 87 Chevy G20 high top van fgs , and i will be carrying a few hundred pounds of wood in it often, my confusion was in the door stickers saying 30 pounds inflation and 1 35 pound inflation so not sure how to read that door sticker so will go with 40 if you have been using that pressure with no trouble.. would hate to have a blow out and end up in the back of a hearse because i didn't use the Heavy load tires although there is something romantic about being carried to my funeral in the back of my own hearse😆 just not ready for that so soon, want a decade of fun with it first.Thanks for your help again Much appreciated and much luck to you also Sir

Love the review, I’ve always loved the look of hearses and it’d be cool to own one one of these days. I think some models might have room for a second row of seats so you could take it on a long road trip with friends and load it full of stuff (or tailgating) though would get lots of odd looks. Also I think they look cool, had nothing to do with hauling dead people (I think the more rounded and modern looking the luxury cars get the uglier the hearses get too now unfortunately)
@meleepinata Жыл бұрын
You can put it rear seats, but I should tell you they're not crash rated. A lot of hearses have rust issues and repairs needed that continually got passed by. Hearses and limos seem like perfectly manicured cars, but they're often not. Limos almost always end up getting the worst treatment. A word of caution to avoid any Northstar engines from 97-04. Owning one is a ton of fun, frustrating, and everything else in between.

When you say it has a "GMC Dually rear end", I assume you mean the Commercial Chassis spec 14 bolt 9.5" Semi Float Axle. If it has this, I 'think' this hearse would have been ordered as a Commercial Chassis. As I understand it, only a few coachbuilders were given access to the Commercial Chassis in the 90s(Namely Superior). Many hearses and limos were stretched from normal spec Fleetwoods and still had the 10 bolt found in most B and D body sedans. Now that I think of it, the Caprice and Roadmaster based hearses would have been very practical conversions, they already had somewhat suitable bodywork and were equipped with the strongest axles in the B/D cars(besides the 14bolt from the commercial chassis.I actually have one of these truck axles under a Caprice and live in Chicago too!
@southsidediy Жыл бұрын
Also if it is that 5 lug axle, it should be a semifloater, all dually axles are full floating 10.5" units with leaf spring perches. The most similar axles you would find to these in the trucks were the ones from the 454SS trucks. I believe those had leaf springs. Many 3/4 ton Suburbans, H2s, Avalanches and Escalades had these with coil springs, but 6 lugs in the early 2000s.Still a plenty strong axle and overkill for most any car. Sweet hearse though man, Subscribed!

There was a cemetery that was next to my middle and high school (they were on the same campus.) I remember, during my senior year there was a military helicopter that had made an emergency landing right next to the cemetery, and the military helicopter that was sent to get the original helicopter pilots had to fly around until the funeral was done. Normally, it wouldn’t have been an issue as it’s a small town, and there were maybe 1 or 2 funerals during the school year.
