I am comment #666... Hearses are great novelty vehicles. I grew up in South Georgia and a classmate Joey W. (whose dad owned a used car lot) got one as a party car our senior year of high school. It was a gas guzzler and he could rarely afford to drive it, this was 1981 gas was over $1 a gallon. At lunch one day, on a $5 bet Joey did a belly buster off a picnic table into a mud puddle for gas money to get home and back to school the next day... People went crazy! True story...

I too had the opportunity to do a burnout with my father-in-law, dead, in a casket, in the back of a '56 Ford F100 truck that we had built. The funeral director was petrified, worried the casket would slide out the back and on to the ground. I had planned this ahead of time and made sure the casket would be more than secure in the bed of the truck. It was a surreal experience..

As a hearse driver myself, i can only say that it is the best car one can own Advantages -Much loading space -Best tent to sleep in at festivals -you are not abused as group taxis as they usually have only 2 seats -metalbands would most likely sign it -no need to invest hilarious amounts of money into it to get the stares by the others -cops usually leave you alone -blasting the undertakers theme from it as you drive past (old) people is just funny as fuck Disadvantages -unable to transport more then 1 person at a time Otherwise, no idea, downsides are basicly like every car. Needs repairs, gas and all that.

I used to have an old car with lots of engine, and I made a couple of mods to it. I routed the rear brake line through the floor, and through the center console, where I installed a shut off valve, so I could shut off pressure to the rear cylinders. Then I installed a windshield washer in the trunk, with the squirters in the rear fender wells, pointing at the back tires. Then I filled that with antifreeze, and had a button for that in the console as well. Now I can shut off the back brakes, hold the front brakes and the gas at the same time, and burn the tires off it until the cows come home. And the antifreeze made lots of smoke, and helped keep the tires from catching on fire. Lot of fun! You seem like the perfect guy for that mod.

So, once upon a time I belonged to a small informal Mustang club. Most of the guys in the club were rag-tag car builders who scratched performance parts from anywhere they could. We also had a guy with a brand new Atlantic Blue GT with the big wing, Cobra R body kit, and wheels. We heard about a car meet up in Concord and we were from Santa Cruz. Well, we hopped on 17 to 880, then got on 680. This was back when cell phones were not REALLY prevalent, but people had them in their cars. We're cruising up 680 and get to a point where some FC RX7 decides he wants to play with us. Well, I had probably the highest power car in the group and it was equipped with 12 inch glass packs and side pipes (which were good for a 20HP loss). This RX7 guy and I started trading "who's faster", then the rest of the guys in the group started doing it -- by this time it was a matter of necessity as leap frog was the only way the pack could stay together. Well, things went on and we kinda lost track of how much distance we covered. Eventually we calmed down and the Atlantic Blue Mustang resumed his leader duties and we soon pulled off the freeway towards our destination. But alas, we hadn't escaped the long arm of the law, a Motorcycle Officer had been trailing us for quite some time and proceeded to pull over the entire group. The story, as was relayed to me, is that for a 20 mile stretch of 680 we'd lit up 911 with every cell phone. The officer didn't personally witness our shenanigans, so he couldn't write up anyone specifically, however he did issue a stern warning to our pack leader to mind our P's and Q's. To this day, I can only imagine what a side-piped 5.0 with glass packs would sound like ripping past you at full throttle, chased by a suped-up Turbo-II FC RX7...

I worked at a mortuary in Phoenix, can confirm. Flew to Long Beach to pick up a coach that had been shipped from Hawaii. Drove home with my foot to the floor and expired Hawaiian plates. One DPS officer turned his lights on as I passed him but that was it. Also driving a tow truck will allow all sorts of forgiveness from law enforcement. Especially highway patrol.

Loved the stories.Thank you. The fist time i ever seen my brother in law was when i was maybe 12 years old and was outside the church waiting on my mother and i heard what sounded like a dump truck without a muffler and look up just in time to see a black 70's something hearse going over a hundred and when it went past i could see my sister and soon to be brother in law laughing hysterically as they shot past the church.. As it turned out he (brother in law) was a guy that worked at gas stations with repair shop combo' and would buy these type of cars for super cheap and fix them. Drive them until something better came along. To me he was the coolest guy ever. He could fix anything and drove everything.
