With all the time wasted trying to pry the pistons back by hand, it would have been faster and easier just to take the caliper off in the first place. It's a good idea anyway, I inspect my seals and clean everything with brake parts cleaner. And the pins go back in much easier if you clean them with Scotchbrite or sandpaper. No mention was made of inspecting the rotor. The statement about needing to bleed because of the way you hooked up the drain bottle is correct. Best way is to siphon a bit of fluid out of the reservoir and not touch the bleeders. However, I always like to bleed and flush my fluid every pad/shoe change anyway. You have good video skills, and you are good at explaining steps clearly. I appreciate the effort.

Ok instead of cracking your bleeder valve to lessen the hydro push, simply open your master cylinder fluid reservoir cap. Also, at 4:30, those aren’t vice grips, those are clamps.

The bleeder will ingest air with this method so keep it close unless bleeding it out to flush. Just grab both pads and squeeze outward one at a tine with a big screw driver then to go further using the old pad on one side, go ahead pull it out and tilt sideways and wedge it on the other-side and use the same method outward and do the other-side and good to go. .

Correct. I never open that valve when simply changing the pads.

Placing the bottle and hose above the bleeder valve should, in theory, prevent air from returning to the caliper. But it's much easier to just pop the master cylinder cap off.

Do not bleed or remove the caliber!! It just takes a couple minutes working the pistons back using an old brake shoe and a pair of channellocks. Just keep working both sides slowly. Also clean and grease the pins and slide throughly with a wire wheel. If you dont then the caliber can lock up and you will only be grinding away one shoe cause premature failure!

Simple job. Just did it on my runner. I did not open the bleeder screw. I didnt want to have to bleed the brakes. I just had a brake fluid flush and fill done before i did this job, so not worried about old fluid creating issues. Popped the cap on the master cylinder and then used my c clamp to compress the pistons. No issues, no overflow.

Thank you so much for the video! I started to unbolt 4 inner caliper bolts first but stopped when I saw the brake fluid started bleeding between two parts of caliper. Than I went to home, and found your video on You Tube. With your help I did my job very fast.... To push down the pistons I used IRWIN VISE-GRIP Groove-lock Pliers. Also I did't use the bleeders on calipers but just took out the excessive fluid from the brake fluid reservoir by 10ml syringe. Thank you again!

instead of touching the bleeder valve you can open the fill cap on the resevoir achieving the same thing. Just leave a rag on top of the open reservoir so nothing false into it. Air can get sucked back in if you leave the bleeder valve open so I would avoid that method.

This takes so much time. I just push the pistons back with the brake pads. Using a small Prybar. And no. I don’t score the rotor doing this. The old brake pad, yes. Also no need to bleed the brakes. This may not be the right way, but it works and it simple. Can do both sides in 30 mins or less.

that's for sure where the air got introduced into the sytem. When watching this I thought I had been doing it wrong all these years, and I guess if you plan on bleeding brakes anyway, it doesn't matter, but if you don't, that steps seems dangerous, and like the author said, he had to bleed the brakes. All in all great video though, I hope we all learned something.

@@rossharmon996 pushing the fluid back into the resivor is not dangerous 99 percent of all mechanics do it the system needs to be bleed anyways when your just changing pads if the system was properly bleed to begin with pushing all the fluid back into the resivor is not dangerous at all never had any customer ever get injured or a vehicle damaged what so ever at my shops doing that procedure only time its bad or dangerous is if the system wasn't properly bleed of air to begin with

I don't think you got air in your brake system from shaking the bottle of brake fluid. When you attached a hose to your bleeder, you got air got in that way. Using your method of opening the bleeder (which is unecessary, by the way), you allowed air into the system and needed to bleed the air out because of it. Also, it could have been a good idea to lubricate the pins as well. Good concise video though. Thanks for the effort.

Why ruin your screw driver, use a pin punch instead. And, you forgot to put the spring back on. A C-clamp made for changing brake pads could have saved you a lot of time. You had to bleed brakes because you drained fluid to relieve the pistons, it really wasn't what you said stating I shook the fluid container prior to adding fluid. Don't forget to verify what DOT number fluid is required.
