Very informative video. I like the no shaky cam. Makes it alot easier to see what your doing.

Video has some good information. I just did OEM rotors and pads on our 2000 4Runner (16" wheels), the outer pads for each side come stamped from Toyota showing RH and LH (Right Hand and Left Hand) as vehicle side specific but the inner pads are not specific. The vehicle side specific is for the wear pin placement. Also in the video, that appeared to be a lot of CRC anti-squeal put on that pad, Toyota shows much smaller amounts to be used. From what I have seen from Toyota, the shims are to be replaced with new pads and not reused. Probably to avoid bent or damaged shims going back in. I imagine shims get reused a lot though in home shops and mechanic garages.

Great video, I was searching all the clips dealing with these brakes as my 95 Tacoma had the pads installed backwards on one side and properly on the other so when I noticed of course had no clue which side was installed right! (my first time doing brakes on this machine) Your clip is the only one that made this distinction as to which pad went where! Thanks.

So if you open up the reservoir and the line, you don’t have to bleed the whole system ?
@jamespalmer54077 жыл бұрын
What i did was use the old pad to force the calipers in and took the cap off the resevor and force the fluid back up into the resevor, you should never need to mess with the bleed screw
@israelrodriguez69865 жыл бұрын
You did this on a 3rd gen Toyota 4runner? If so did the calipers go back easy even tho the fluid was going up all the back to the reservoir??? Would greatly appreciate your ansr since I will be doing this in the morning, thanks!!!

I know I spend a lot of time talking about safety on this video. I still have all of my fingers and toes, but I know a lot of mechanics who don't, or who have "expired" early due to not taking the time to ensure a safe set up. Preparation is half the job.

RedonKilaus, my 3rd gen 4Runner brake rotors always warp. I am on my third set of aftermarket rotors and pads. Should I replace them with OEM rotors and brake pads?
@redonKiLaus4 жыл бұрын
OEM are better than cheap aftermarket parts, but a big reason rotors warp is not torquing wheels to spec with a torque wrench, and also overheating through towing, riding brakes, etc. I don't abuse mine and do torque my wheels and have never had any warpage issues on my 4Runner. Thanks for watching!
@mags86734 жыл бұрын
redonKiLaus thank you for your quick reply. I will replace these aftermarket parts with OEM rotors and pads, with proper wheel torque. Thank you for posting informative videos, your calm voice is amazing. More power to your channel.

Nice Video. Do you lube the the brake pad/spring pins with anything? Also, after 80k miles, wouldn't you replace the rotors as well? Thanks again for the info
@redonKiLaus6 жыл бұрын
I typically use a synthetic grease like Krytox or Royal Purple. I typically replace rotors every couple pad changes, and the previous set of pads on this particular vehicle was replaced in conjunction with the rotors, so this is the second set on this pair of rotors. As long as they are not warped (torque your wheels to spec and don't overheat your brakes when towing) then you are good to go. Thanks for watching!

I installed the pad with 1 wear inicstor on the inside instead of the outside, is this bad? Should I fix it asap?
@redonKiLaus6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what wear indicator you are referring to - can you elaborate?
@jacktran9606 жыл бұрын
redonKiLaus the metal thing that rubs against the rotor when your pads are worn down. One pad has 2 that stick out from the middle, the other pad has 1 that sticks out at the end.

What happens if you put the backing plates and shims on backwards?
@redonKiLaus7 жыл бұрын
I've not done that so I can't speak from experience, but probably deformation of the shims would be the end result.

*for the 3rd gen 4runner, you do not have to bleed the the brakes..just open up the brake reservoir , use a c clamp to push back the pistons. Done*

Turn or replace your rotors???
@redonKiLaus8 жыл бұрын
Neither is necessary if the rotor runout is within spec as was my case. Unless you overheat your brakes, live in a climate that eats rotors, or don't evenly torque lug nuts, it takes quite a long time for runout to exceed Toyota specs. Thanks for watching!
