This is a great tutorial. I'm in the process of doing this job on mine right now, I have everything apart, and let me tell you that 17 mm swivel would have been really useful! I had fun breaking those free with a breaker bar lol. I realized I need to replace the calipers, Pistons in the driver side are seized, and I cannot get the pins out of the passenger side, so my job's a little bit more complicated. At least I'll have no issues getting the pads back correctly.

I must have been showing them (OEM) for the video, the link provided I’ve used those pads a few times. Can’t go wrong with them, but offcourse the OEM stuff is always the best to use.

Great Video! For the rear brakes, what grease do you use for the rear brake slide pins? Also, what are your recommendations for breaking in new pads with new rotors?
@VikingsGarage
@VikingsGarage Жыл бұрын
Thank you! You can use the little grease pack that comes with the brake pads. Breaking them in is nothing to crazy, just drive normal without sudden stopping for the first 100 miles. 👍🏻

Being a Toyota tech/5th gen 4Runner owner have to experienced constant “warped” rotors, I recently had the trd pro in for service for “back slap” and the tech added a upper anti rattle clip used oem blue backed pads and shims this being said I believe during his test drive post install the rotors were hot spotted warped (aftermarket) less then 1200km this is the second set or f warped rotors I’ve experienced any input would be appreciated thanks have a good day.
@VikingsGarage
@VikingsGarage Жыл бұрын
One it could be the quality of the rotors, you need to get OEM or Stop tech rotors. Two it could possibly be improperly brake in , first 1000 miles . Absolutely, positively no hard stopping at all.
@Jess-Be1
@Jess-Be1 Жыл бұрын
Ok thanks a lot for your input depending on OEM pricing I might try the stop techs, got vehicle 6 months ago haven’t even put5500km on it and been plagued by front brake issues/noise the dealership put garbage brakes on as a part of the deal. Now I’ve since payed them to changed the pads as explained earlier, I was hopeful the rotors would be ok I should have learned my lesson with the first set they threw on and assumed they used the same… should have ditch the “warranty” and taken care of everything myself 🤦

Thx man for another great explanation. Do you know if is ok to clean the brakes ( with brake cleaner obviously) every 5k when I’m doing tire rotation? Thx for your help
@VikingsGarage

There should be no need for you to clean your brakes with brake cleaner every 5k. The only time you use brake cleaner is when you’re doing a brake job.

I really appreciate your support!! And I really want to help, but it would be really hard for me to diagnose this based on your description. I don’t want to be guessing… best advice I can give you is. Check your brakes first, at 40k you might need front brakes, that’s usually more or less how long they last. Best of luck!! Let me know what you find

Hey brother I know this applies to the 4runner, but I just performed front brake pads and rotors on my 2007 fj cruiser with 225,600 miles. The issue I'm having is the front brakes still make a horrible squealing sound when I apply the brake pedal. I used genuine toyota pads and rotors for the job and I'm at a loss on what it could be??? Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm ready to take everything back apart. First thing I can think of is I didn't use the toyota brake shim hardware??? Or I didn't grease everything enough????? Thanks again man!!! I have read this a common issue on the FJ from the forums online. I'm just a average Joe back yard mechanic trying to save a buck. Love this rig so far!!!! Much respect from down here In Maryland!! 🙏

If you use aftermarket pads, do you need those oem “shims”? I bought akebono pads but they didn’t come with the shims. Didn’t know if those were specifically for oem pads
@VikingsGarage

Is it necessary to bed new brake pads and rotors? Or just drive normally?
@VikingsGarage
@VikingsGarage 10 ай бұрын
Drive normally. I personally wouldn’t slam on the brakes too much initially, as that will cause pulsation right away.

You can do anything you want, just be aware that you will most likely have a pulsation afterwards. 😉

What do you recommend for those of us with 4th Gens and the seizing calipers? I’ve already replaced them once and they’re seized again. Some people swap them out for 5th Gen calipers, some say steel brake lines are the answer. Do you have any experience with this and know of a solution that works?
