I dont have a single freind or family member who would consider a nissan after the way the local dealer treated one of my buddies when the cvt trans in his 5 year old versa exploded at 70k miles.They quoted him $5000 for the trans to be replaced, told him they wouldnt even speak to him any longer after he mentioned all the recalls on the cvts and then offered him a "generous" $500 for the car as a trade in since he would be a "returning customer". The kia dealer offered him $3500 on it even with the bad trans and offered him an additional discount on his current car.
@DrewLSsix13 сағат бұрын
Not to make excuses, but it's far easier to be generous with your offers when things are going well financially. The dealers are suffering as much as corporate is and they likely can't afford to comp customers like Honda might. I work at a Honda dealer and we will often work very hard to get someone a new trans or motor when we know they have issues, along with countless little things that we really don't need to cover. But Honda is doing well, our dealer makes $$ and we dont even bother to stock base model cars. Literally every single new car on our lot comes with the big screen, I only ever see the little screens when theres been a dealer trade.

My father said before that He'd be alright leasing a Nissan but never buying one, and I gotta say I agree with him on that. I feel one thing many carmakers don't often look at is the used car market, basically what happens after it stops being new, and Nissan destroyed their reputation in that aspect. I'd never buy a used Nissan at least not one from the past 20 years with the CVTs. My neighbor is trying to sell his son's 2014 Rogue and besides some small body damage due to being in a crash, it's not badly beaten up. My sister is learning to drive soon and we're looking for a car for her, and if Nissan was more reliable we probably would've gotten it, if it was a Toyota or Honda we would've snatched it up so quickly And who knows, maybe if she enjoyed her Nissan she'd be interested in buying a new one down the line, but because of the reliability issues that path was closed

Thanks Roman - First time I’ve listened to a Roman report - will go through the backlog now, found it really insightful. I’m in Australia, so we don’t have the predatory loan issue here, but Nissans are seen as the lower of the Japanese brands - I think moreso than Mitsubishi. Funny how that has changed from the 1990s where (in my memory) they were more of an upmarket brand. I hope to see them continue, it’s an interesting market with china spamming and the EV migration, but there is still a huge market for that entry level car - with a large dealer network support.

My personal theory around Honda’s interest in merging with Nissan is built around 2 points: 1) Nissan has a more developed EV platform than Honda does. Honda thought they could half-ass an EV by having GM build them the Prologue, but I think it showed that the Prologue wasn’t a real Honda product and that turned people off of it. They want Nissan so they can develop their own EV and have enough control over the design process that they get everything they want out of it, rather than (I assume) having to accept whatever concessions GM forced them to make on the Prologue. 2) Honda sees the same thing Nissan does, that cars are too expensive and there’s a large underserved market in the sub 30k range, and they want to basically rebadge some of their models as Nissans so they can sell to the more affordable market without devaluing the Honda brand name

Several issues with Renault-Nissan: Renault in Europe has Dacia brand as budget friendly. When they started, servicing your car at the dealer was cheaper than servicing it anywhere else. Also common parts like headlight, mirrors and bumpers were cheap to replace. But as the time went on, price of servicing went up. In general, cost of ownership went high, as they wanted to increase their profits by loosing money on cars when sold, and having high return on service. I own Renault Zoe EV, which when came out in 2012 had 43kW! AC charging capability, which was great for delivery companies because cost of 43kW AC charger is under 400€ in parts. It had robust motor built by Continental that can last over 400.000km and under-stressed battery because motor had only 66kW/90Hp, and it lasted forever. My car is 2018 with Renault motor, 80kW/110Hp and it eats motor bearings. Renault does not replace bearings which cost about 40€ in total, but installs brand new drive unit (motor, inverter, charger and AC compressor) at the cost that is higher than car itself. And it is designed to fail at just after it goes out of warranty. As for Nissan Leaf - great car, bad EV. In both gens it can DC fast charge only using Chademo, there is no battery cooling or heating and cells degrade extremally fast. It has no resale value as used EV as it is almost useless. So nobody buys it new. So, if a brand wants to be a budget brand, they have to be budget all the was and earn on selling units. If they want to be mid brand, they have to sell quality cars at competitive prices. And if they want to be luxury brand (Infinity), then can not sell generic SUVs at 2x cost if they are on the same platform as mid level cars.

The craziest thing is I loved the micra. Then they discontinued it north of your borders. In my mind it didn’t make sense to cancel it, it was a budget friendly hatchback to battle the rio and spark. But I think their lack of profit didn’t help.

Maybe the cheap as chips approach is the perfect way back into the heart of American sales? There’s so much uncertainty. But they’re never won’t be people looking for a cheap new car. The middle class buying power is decreasing… perhaps Nissan needs to stay the course stay at that $30,000 or less marker and wait till we become desperate. Shit that’s really dark. I don’t think they need to pull a Jaguar Roman, automatic V6 Mustangs are underrated. You are awesome!

One of the main issues for Nissan is that they've been building absolute shit boxes for decades now and only through Covid when people didn't have a choice but to buy Nissans did their unpopularity and unreliability start making waves. People have known as far back as 2010 that you buy a Nissan by force, not choice because nobody would willingly buy a vehicle that would be worthless in value and worthless to repair. CVT transmissions are junk, but Nissans took that as a challenge and wanted to make them shit. Then, there's the whole Cummins debacle. They swindled their buyers into buying a truck that had no purpose as it got worse gas mileage than a 3/4 ton, towed only a little more than most half tons, and had similar power to diesels from the early 2000's. Then, if that wasn't a kick in the teeth, the engine turned out to be an absolute shitbox, to the point that their parts inventory dried up in a matter of 2 years and had never recovered with many owners having given back their trucks and walked away from the loan or sucking it up as it sits at dealers for months waiting for parts.

It wasn't the market segment they pursued. It was the loss of reputation for reliability, less earned than from association with Toyota and Honda. No company can sell CVTs to a market that won't change CVT fluid every 50-60k miles and retain its reputation. And that's the market Nissan found by going downmarket. If Nissan wants to survive, my recommendation: bring back the < $25k compact truck. It's a market where there's no remaining competition in the US.

Nissan in Australia has died off. They finally made the patrol updated for tech but the rest of the vehicles sold are dull and known to fail. And we have the Chinese cars to compete with here at the budget level. And as a result of the Chinese competition, Honda and Mazda and Toyota have moved out of the budget arena because they can't compete. They just have reliability and good dealer service and spare parts availablity.

If they hadn't brought out shit motors (variable compression/displacement) or used Jatco CVT's, in spite of knowing they were garbage, they might have had a better chance.

I bet Nissan has gone completely xenophobic with any foreign management / company, Honda must be feeling the same way, if the merger goes go through. I'm expecting Nissan's QC/QA to be at it's 90's standards again, even if Honda buys 40%, Nissan will be able to refloat the corrupted ship.

Something that rarely get's mentioned: The people who buy them, even used, have tarnished this brand's reputation. It's not even just the high APR rates, it's poor marketing. The cars are somewhat stylish, but people who drive Rogues and Altimas seem to have little knowledge or responsibility about cars. Amazingly, "Big Altima Energy" can be seen in cities across the country.

Part of the issue for them is all the car models are so stagnant and they sold the crap out of them to rental fleets which are now massively getting blown out by said companies on the used markets.

1:10 the unrelenting pounding of a format that just barely keeps traction, with minor variations - like the addition of foreign accents - the unhinged intros can only become more unhinged to remain relevant..... thank God for the Roman reports and the back catalog of long format narratives of a subculture like the ones covering the Appalachian trail.

I’ve owned several Nissans when I was younger (this was early to mid 2000s); a 1987 D21 Hardbody, an 87 two door pathfinder, an 89 maxima, a 92 Stanza, an 87 300ZX, a brand new 2007 Versa, and finally a 2006 Murano. The last two vehicles were awful compared to the earlier models - soulless, cheap, and laden with problematic CVTs. For me, it was the CVT that killed the brand entirely. I drive Mazdas now.

Meanwhile my 2017 Nissan sentra I got new has now reached 150,000 miles with original CVT. Sometimes you get lucky with those transmissions. Yes I change the cvt fluid every 30,000 miles.

How's Mitsubishi doing with its bargain bin products? I recently bought a new car, and Nissan even got a look for the Leaf. I didn't consider a single thing that Mitsubishi makes.

The irony of Nissan partnering with Honda is that neither of these auto makers are known for their robust transmissions... Who knows, maybe they'll be more than the sum of their parts.

I'm assuming the Honda/Nissan merger is solely because they found out I added a Honda to my garage, alongside the Nissan I've had for awhile. Obviously only one path forward! But I can say as someone who generally has had Nissans my entire driving life, I no longer would consider them for a new purchase. While I personally never was affected by it, the CVT issue is out there. I also just feel they have gotten ultra generic in their current lineup. Sure, people make fun of the Juke, but it was at least something different. And I happen to love my Nismo RS version of it (with manual transmission, obviously). I still see XTerras everywhere, but there's another discontinued line of a somewhat quirky vehicle. I imagine I'm not the only person who had some brand loyalty to Nissan who no longer considers them for future purchases....especially after getting my first Honda and absolutely loving it.

It's as if you alienate your customer base and then wonder why they left. The Juke (joke) was a sign of very bad things coming.

Honda would never, they've been putting the same engine into the Civic for almost 20 years now. They would not stand for Nissan's quality.

I got a Leaf recently because I figured "if I'm going to drive an appliance, I may as well commit to the bit." I ended up adoring this thing. It's everything I want in a car. The charging and battery tech is ancient and will only get harder to find public chargers in the coming years. It's the only downside I've encountered. I never considered Nissan before recently. Their cars always seemed pretty uninspiring, never the better choice against their competitors. I still don't cheerlead their failure. I hope they can pull it together.

The seriousness of the situation if simply illustrated by the fact that the Honda-mistubishi thing was even considered an option, never mind that it's actually going ahead. Culurally, it's unthinkable to the degree of Ford partnering with GM.

I've been a Nissan fan for more than half my life now, but admittedly they haven't made a car I've been a fan of since the 90s. Maybe things would be different if they had made that IDX thing...but who knows. I remember a Nissan that made cool, innovative cars that were fun to drive. The Nissan Exa, The NX-2000, the Pulsar SSS, the GTI-R, S12/13/14/15, B13...I could keep going. All this stuff fell away and we were left with what? A handful boring sedans, the 350, and some SUVs? No, they weren't as reliable as Toyotas, but they didn't have to be. The fun factor made up for that, and so did the price. Today? The only affordable thing they have with a manual is what...the Versa? Their other cars with that awful Trainwreck of a cvt...what did you expect was gonna happen, Nissan? You tried to box with Toyota and there is just no way you were ever gonna win that match. :'(

I just purchased a 2025 Nissan Frontier in early November before all of this was announced. I think Nissan sticking with older proven NA V6 tech while every other midsize goes 4cyl turbo or hybrid is a wise and cost effective choice. Playing to the truck buyer market which tends to skew more tech conservative would probably be helping them sell more Frontiers had this news not dropped. One glaring issue I see having worked with six different dealers trying to buy this truck is Nissan dealerships. These dealerships have been working the low end, bad credit market soo long they don't know how to appeal to any other customer type. The customer experience at most Nissan dealerships is horrible. They assume you have no money, bad credit, your too dumb to know what you want and can't afford it if you do. They are absolutely unwilling to go out of their way to get you what you want unless you, as one dealer told me, agree in writing to a buy agreement with a dealer market adjustment. In other words, pay us more to actually do our jobs. Or, maybe this was a "go away kid, your bothering me" tactic. I've owned a Nissan Xterra since 2004 so I'm not new to the brand and honestly, while Nissan didn't do itself and favors, Renault holds most of the blame here positioning Nissan as a low tier automaker.

Mitsubishi is simply better at being cheap and Nissan isn’t good enough at being premium or cheap. I think having access to Honda parts could turn that around. Renaults are garbage and having less of that would be nice. I love the Mitsubishi mirage G4. You can get them for $15-$20 thousand. Why would I spend $10k more on a slightly less mediocre car? Put some Honda in it and that might be the ticket.

They should bring back the old King cab. A sub 25k truck with decent reliability and good gas mileage would sell and sell well, hell why do ya think so many Rangers are still on the road?
@Noah_E9 сағат бұрын
Roof crush tests make king/super cabs almost impossible to produce economically. Plus resulting vehicles would have the highest production costs due to stronger materials and engineering needed without the extra pillar of a four door, but would have the lowest demand and lowest profit margin. Plus, people so cheap/poor they only want a basic truck aren't likely to buy new. Car companies aren't in business to build products people want/can afford five years from now.
@TheHangarHobbit9 сағат бұрын
@@Noah_E Riiight, because there are no plumbers, roofers, electricians, and a bazillion other businesses that want just a dependable reliable work truck that gets decent gas milage without the cost of a luxury car 🤣 My family's electrical business ran on a fleet of Rangers because you could carry enough gear to do a full house wiring job while the Mazda 4 banger in those were built like tanks and didn't blow out the gas card. Hell, my local Napa still runs on a fleet of Rangers, why do ya think the majority of Rangers were company white? Mark my words if Nissan put out a small truck with no bells and whistles, just a reliable work truck in company white with a solid 4 banger and decent hauling capacity under 25k every small business would be lining up to snatch them, but auto companies want to crank out 80k+ trucks because the bells and whistles let them put insane mark ups, hence why my local Ford and GMC dealers are full of 2+ year old trucks that they can't move as they are just luxury cars in a truck form.
