I prefer it when pro golfers weren't using game improvement clubs of today and only the best ball strikers were in contention. Great video.

Great era. Before golf clubs and golf balls man handled the golf course. And the incomparable Johnny Miller on the mic. Plus the emotion on these players compared to today is evident

Tom Lehman never gets enough credit for being only the 2nd player to ever lead the Open after 54 holes for three straight years, the other being Bobby Jones (and no, I am obviously not comparing the two). Yes, he should have probably won at least one of them, but he was a bit unlucky in all of them. 1995: Corey Pavin hits that incredible 4-wood on 18 to win. 1997: He had the right line on 17, but went a bit long and it rolled into the water. 1998: He probably had no chance to win, but he was in the final group with the late Payne Stewart, but never seriously threatened. Still impressive to be in the final group a 4th straight year. This is the one he should have won. Even with that being said, he got a horrible break on 18. Greg Norman said it in the interview after his round: "they (Lehman and Jones) will hit driver off the tee and could drive it through the fairway". On 18, Lehman pulls out the driver........and drives it through the fairway. Really a terrible break. I'm not trying to make excuses for Lehman here, but considering everything I mentioned, he just, as I said, deserves a little more recognition for his accomplishment.

Yep, and some of those putts that could have dropped. Not related exactly, but same thing against Olazabal at '94 Masters. Awful luck.

Tom Lehman was indeed a great player. Won all over the world and did it the hard way. Didn't he play in Asia in his early career? I say that because we didn't hear much about him until he was well into his 30s, where he became world #1, won the British Open and was just a whisker away from having 3 consecutive US Opens and a Green Jacket to boot. And then as soon as he gets to the top, Tiger comes along... Now I know lots of golfers could say "I should have won this/that" but in Tom's case, he was desperately unlucky. What could he do about that shot from Corey Pavin? Nothing. Having one major each would make you think they were on the same level but of course they weren't (Corey wasn't a bad player of course but never the best in the world like Tom was for a while). I have maximum respect for anyone who goes around the world, playing on other tours far less lucrative to achieve their dream, all the while becoming a better golfer and eventually make it to the top. Stories like that don't happen too often in sports.

Lehman is a bum and maybe the most overrated American golfer of all-time. If he didn't slob on God's knob in every post-round interview people wouldn't even know who he is.

Make no mistake.....watching the accolades of so many legends of golf for the greatest player who ever lived, Jack Nicklaus, will show, he will never be surpassed......These people lauding this great champion knew nothing of Tiger Woods yet, but forward 26 years and even with Tiger's phenomenal talent, history proves that he will remain second to the master of golf....Jack Nicklaus.....His collective achievements over 50 odd years can never be overtaken.....The God of golf.

I can see why Montgomerie never won a major.. You can tell he isn't confident when the pressure is on.

True, although in the ‘95 PGA play-off he hit two great shots into the green, and got thwarted by Elkington’s monster putt.

I look at guys like Norman and Montgomery differently than most. Yeah, ultimately you want the win, but seconds--however they got there--count for a lot to me. They still bested all the rest of the competition and had a great tournament. If I were to award points, I'd give 10 for a win, and 5 for 2nd. It's like Nicklaus's record is way more formidable for having 19 seconds with his 18 wins. It's stupid to look at either player as a loser. They played a lot of great majors, more than a very few. Not closing the deal only keeps them out of the very first rank.

@BookBinder Bachelor Well maybe because Nicklaus only really played at the majors, and he usually practice the venue for more then a week, while most others come in the week of the major. Jack would have already been there more then a week when most guys arrive. That is the reason for all of those seconds and 3rds. Plus the guy was one damn great player.

And I kind of disagree, 2nds mean nothing.

@@ericday4505 Not according to the purse allotments. If they really did, it would be winner take all. And re: Nicklaus. He's the one who made a fetish of the majors. Winning a regular tournament is still a big deal. Very few have won more than 10 in an entire career.

@@nicholasschroeder3678 If a guy is on the tour, because he is trying to feed his family then ok yeah, but these guys most of them already have endorsement deals and such, and a second place finish really is only big if you are a journeyman. In fact too many seconds and you begin to look like you can't close the deal, especially if you haven't won.

@@ericday4505 Can't agree. A second in any kind of PGA event IS a big deal. It shows top notch play at the highest level through 4 rounds. No one counts a second against a player. He beat all the field but one. Any player with consistent top tens gets lucky--and there's always an element of luck--and notches wins. Sheffler and Zaltoris are disappointed at not winning this week, but they still had great tournaments and everyone knows that. They were there, and but for a putt, they could have stood in the winners circle. What's truly meaningless is the guys playing for LIV who get fat checks for joining up and then playing in exhibitions against has beens.

DL III the best choker of all time. I mean you’re on the 18th green you know you have to par and you leave it 3 feet short From 20ft away. Choke! Unbelievable.
