Here is the low down on removing the old, leaky oil lines going from the radiator to the oil filter adapter. The part is listed in the manual as an "oil filter by-pass valve". This should answer all your concerns before you start this project; The bolts on the old housing have 1/2" hex heads, but the one on my doner engine are 7/16" hex heads, however, the thread diameter of both is 5/16". Don't let that throw you off, it is the thread diameter that matters here. They are grade 5 from the factory (3 lines). There are 18 threads per inch (coarse thread). The length from the bottom of the head to the end of the threads is 1 and 1/8" long. The torque specification is 120 inch pounds (10 foot pounds) according to my Haynes manual for a Chevy small block (or a big block). Again, it is referred to as an Oil Filter By-Pass Valve. There is no need for a gasket. The Wix filter number (includes an anti drain back valve) is 57099. A/C Delco number is PF454. The filter is about 3 inches tall and clears the front drive shaft. I cut the old lines about an inch from the nuts at the radiator, crimped them closed in a vise, and filled the back side with RTV. That was to make me feel better, but there is only, or at least there should only be oil in that part of the radiator. My oil pressure has definitely increased on my stock/factory oil pressure gauge. This retrofit eliminates several weak spots that are potential leaks. There is only one hidden bolt that goes to the front of the left engine mount. I cut the metal lines with a sawzall with a 14 teeth per inch blade for ease of removal. Only regret is not doing this sooner. I now have higher oil pressure, less leaks, and less mess when changing the oil. Good luck, I hope this helps others... K-Lap

@@Chevro91 all I know is I don’t use a gasket. I’ve had my motor in my suburban running with no gasket now since 2017. With 130k miles on it. The motor I had in it before that. No gasket. It was still running when I changed it out at 235k. The only reason I changed it out was because one of the heads had cracked and I didn’t want to just replace the heads. So I built this motor and put it in.

I would have to say no gasket... just because in either scenario.. the oil filter is the gasket... it's what's holding the oil in..

This video was a huge help. I bought the same filter and part from Summit. I did the delete on my '99 Yukon, but as it came in the package without a gasket. FYI, torque specs for the new bolts is 95 inch pounds. I had also read in another forum that there is no gasket because it is designed to seep by.

Maybe I'll go out of theme a lil bit, but I have a question; I have a '93 GMC Safari, and recently found that there's an oil hemorrhage @ the "in" line besides the filter when the engine is on. The problem is just an O-ring but it doesn't come to buy separately (at least one like the older one. It's uncommon). I looked at every known and not known auto part, and nothing. At the last one (exclusively GM), the attendant tolds me; "You can just block the holes and that's it". I did more research, and found that the people delete all around, including the oil cooling manifold that holds the filter too. But I don' t know what's the difference between just block it and delete the manifold, and why not just block the holes? Thanks.
