Worked on a LOT of 4.0s. Heads and valve seats have never been a issue with them. There biggest issues are intake seals.

all you have to do, is connect an old fashioned bright TIMING LIGHT to the engine, and move the secondary pickup from wire to wire, and the light won't flash on the missing cylinder. then it's either coil pack, wire, or plug. simple.

always check plug right after coil output. You can read plug and maybe point you in right direction.If pkug is wet and black could be bad plug {or burnt valve)If plug is dry look and listen to see if injector is ticking

Check camshaft position sensor at the passenger side rear of the engine. If it goes bad it will cause a misfire . it fires the fuel injectors.

i was going to change my sparkplugs wires and coil pack. You got me concerned about shocking myself. What in that procedure do I need to watch out for? I watched some other videos and its seems straight forward? I was going to disconnect the negative on the battery and start replacing?

Don't do any ignition work when the car is running. It could be a heart stopper.

i have a 93 Ford ranger it idles ruff some times and bogs down like it's lost all it's horsepower there is black carbon at the end of the top of my tale pipe on my truck there is a flashing white light at the end of the spark plug wire's would any one no what this could be

I have a 97’ 4.0 & I got a misfire code for cylinder 4 with a heavy shake from the engine. I had just done a tune up 5 months ago. I replaced the ignition coil pack & the code went away but the vehicle is still shaking a little more than it should. Should I consider replacing the fuel injector on that cylinder even if I’m not running a lean code?

Leakdown test. Possibly compression test. Thos engines are known for burning exhaust valves.

I have a 97 ford ranger. And when it shifts into 3rd gear it feels like it wants to stall. And it starts to kick then pick up speed again. What would cause that. I have replaced the fuel filter and done an oil change.

oops tube friend because this truck has 2 oil dipsticks one on the left side near the egr and the other behind the ignition coil, this one behind the ignition coil I was curious, I'm from Brazil and I would like to know, thank you if you can inform me in advance, thank you for your attention.

Need help randomly started misfiring on cylnder 1 threw a code p0301 new plugs, wires, coil pack still a misfire did that test of takeing the wire out of the coil pack and you can hear it sparking could it be bad plug?

Take out plug, and look for carbon tracking. They have valve issues once in a while too. Could be injector issue, but doubtful.

If you have a good spark all the way to the spark plug, and did an injector swap (moved injector to a different cylinder), and still have a #4 misfire, you might want to do a cylinder leakdown test. The 3.0L fords burn exhaust valves all the time. You may have an issue like that with your 4.0. That is the best advice I can give you.

@@nicanorm1069 If you are sure the valves are closed all the way, You have your answer. Those heads are easy for me to replace, and have sent a bunch to get a valve job, and resurface long before I ever did a KZbin video. By the way, you did a compression test, and not a leakdown test. Probably still the same result.

having bad spark plug wire's can make your truck or carboraitor run tuff like idles ruff bogs down and carbon build up at the tail pipe could it be a bad o2 sensor

You will always get a little carbon in your tailpipe. especially if it is misfiring, or running rich. if it runs bad, there is probably a check engine light on. best to see what it is. if you think you have bad plug wires see if they look like this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m17HeH-PpMmtbqM

96 Ford Explorer 4.0 # 2 cylinder misfire. I’ve changes plugs, wires. coil was fine so I left that. new o2 sensors has great compression at a stand still now

Might want to try an injector swap, and see if it goes to a different cylinder.

A bit late but I have money on a cracked head. Not uncommon. Try some K-seal in the coolant. It fixed mine. I had to run it with the plug out but it sealed. Runs fine now. I have a 96 too. Blow compressed air into the cyl at TDC and see if the coolant rises. Next is a replacement head (it can't be repaired).

My 2000 Mazda b4000 with the 4.0 ohv misfires on cold start for 15 seconds then go’s away just happens on cold starts what could that be?

Check your spark plugs. If they are really worn, they will work better when hot. Those things almost always need a valve job too. Best advice I can give you.

Rust Belt Auto I changed the plugs an ran some b12 in it an that seem to fix the issue but I noticed by the spark plug coil harness there’s a plug in red wire that disconnected an I don’t see a plug to plug it into it don’t show a check engine code

You have a short to ground somewhere. My guess would be behind the drivers inner fender. But really, i dont know.

I had rusted out valve covers on my 96 explorer and it had a factory sticker with a high voltage sign and a book, right by the coil. Maybe a skull and crossbones would be better :lol: I painted the new V/cs and put the sticker back on with RTV :lol:.

@@RustBeltAuto You know these engines are more German than BMW :lol:. Cologne V6. The replacement parts from ford still say made in Germany. The lower intake gasket I got had a recent date, guess there is a still a need.

Check your gap on new plugs and I bet you money 9 times out of 10 your not correct gap

O.E. pugs are platinum. They are pre-gapped. If you get the correct ones, you do not under any circumstances gap those plugs. You take the chance of ruining the platinum. 9 times out of 10 doesn't work on a 6 cylinder either. Your math is all wrong.

@@RustBeltAuto yes I have been told that too but over 20 years in automotive mechanics is sufficient first hand knowledge for me to strongly disagree. You most certainly can gap platinum plugs but it does require something other than a typical spark plug gap tool. Yes they are easily damaged if you use the wrong tool......but that is true for just about anything you turn a wench on.

@@michaelbarton7897 the truck is fixed bro. 30 years of mechanicking, 13 ASE certifications, and reading literature from spark plug manufacturers tells me if the gap is wrong on a platinum, or uridium plug, either you have the wrong plug number, or you need to return it, and get a new one, because it has been dropped, or damaged somehow.
