Just found this 8 years too late. Good to see you enjoyed the '97 so much. The choke on the left would have helped on the startup and initial idle. I've had my '97 RK since new with 62,000+ miles all over the western U.S. Never faltered, never leaked, never a flat, still have the original drive belt. Great bikes.

Warm up your EVOs before your ride, unless you like blowing out your base gaskets. Start, idle, then feel the jugs. When they're warm, she'll be ready to ride.

The cylinder cases. Make sure those are at least warm to the touch before riding an EVO.

I got a 2004 Road King a month ago. Spent my life making fun of Harleys. Was a sport bike guy. But wife wanted something comfortable to go with my ThruxtonR. I love this thing. It's beautiful. It's fast enough for the way it wants to be ridden. Had a bunch of tasty add ons. Love it. Now I'm looking at Dynas.

windshields are fantastic ! Once you eat a bird or several wasps and bees... Not to mention rain/hail , cross winds ect.... Then you too will want a shield !! You must be a sunshine only rider !! Windshields also help keep rocks off your bike tanks and knees..

I am considering to buy a Road King or a Yamaha 1900. You have driven a lot of Road Kings. Can you tell me which build year is the best. I am thinking that the generation arter this 1997 has more power. Which one to buy?

I got a 2004. Never had a Harley and expected to be frustrated by its lack of power. For the way it wants to be ridden, it's totally fine. I love the feel of the engine, too. Feel bad for making fun of Harleys now. These engines had cam chain adjuster problems until 2007 model year, so at least make sure that's been permanently addressed, and might wanna hold out for fuel injection.

William Thompson Evo motors (84-99) are very reliable engines. Old enough to be serviced cheaply but new enough to have good parts still made. Ive heard that base gaskets will develop leak if you don't let them warm up. enough
