The Jaguar XK8 was the successor to the E Type and XJ-S, but is the V8 luxury coupe as good as it looks?

I own a 2004 XK8 4.2 Coupe in dark blue. I've had it for around 5 years, currently on 92k miles and I love it. It's been reliable on the whole. I've probably spent £6k in maintenance and that includes all new wishbone bushes, brake discs, tyres etc, chassis v-mounts, replacing some aging hoses, gearbox oil change. But it's certainly never let me down and to be honest I just like to keep it in good condition. You could spend a lot less if you didn't actually care about keeping it nice or how it drove, which is unfortunately how a lot of these have been run. So if you buy one second hand, just assume that all of that needs doing over the next few years unless you see proof of previous history. But to actual drive, magnificent. The more more you trust it, the more you realise that the harder and faster you drive it, the better it gets. It has a beautiful sound, and what's nice is that it's not sooo crazy fast that you don't get to enjoy the sound (like a lot of modern cars). I rev it all the way out to the redline frequently and it's just so good. And that's another nice thing, it just feels like it's mean to be driven and enjoyed, like a proper car. And combined with the looks and the interior, I can't imagine myself loving another car like I love my XK8. Of course there's lots of different cars I want for lots of different reasons. But the XK8 may be the ultimate daily driver / road trip car for a great mixture of speed/comfort/looks/handling/feel/x factor.

I fell in love with the xk8 when I first saw one back in 97/98. I vowed one day that I would have one. Consequently, my dream became a reality just as COVID began, a BRG 98 Xk8. İt isn't perfect, but the drive is magnificent. I was so enticed that two years later I purchased the ultimate X100, a metallic black 2003 limited edition 4.2 XKR roadster. I've kept both as I want to get the xk8 up to prime condition before I sell it, and buy a convertible for the spring and summer. There's no other cars I want to buy, other than my previous favourite cars in my lifetime. An EType and Jenson Interceptor. They say you should never meet your idols as you might be disappointed. Well I've met mine and they are still, and will always be my automotive Idols .

I'd say cars have become ugly recently: they all seek to look 'aggressive' to feed the egos of potential buyers, which is just sad. A classic XK8/XKR just looks sleek and classy, which is a rarity.

This type of XK8 seems to be improving with age and is one of those few cars that just somehow looks perfect from every angle. Compared with today's modern F-type it somehow keeps a sense of elegance that the F-type doesn't have... It can be very loud, aggressive and very fast but all a bit yobbish compared to this elegant yet unpretentious mobile smoking jacket of a car 🥰

There's a very sound reason why the rear end of the XK8 isn't featuring very much in this video! The design goes awry at the rear! It was never 'right,' in fact, it was positively awkward at the rear. It's no E-Type, or XJ6!

Just a quick note. These have a trunk handle, it's a leather strap on the trunk lid itself. For whatever reason it's missing here. Beautiful cars that are very reliable. Early versions from 97-00 have issues with timing chain tensioners and water pumps, both plastic. But, those are easily replaceable with metal versions

You're most welcome to take this for a drive, it's totally immaculate and completely stock! I am lucky enough to own a 2003 XKR. I have never owned a car before that gets such nice compliments by passers by. Enjoyed watching your video and I noticed the more you drove it the more you got what I call the Jaguar grin. Just watch the video again and see how the grin grows the more you drive it. Having an XKR it has what is officially called the WOT, Wide Open Throttle, its an extra bit at the base of the pedal. Feels like resistance, push past that.............. its a great feeling as it pushes you into the back of the seat. So watch that Jaguar grin. :)

I had a 2000 black/black XKR convertible. My god it was a beautiful car. The R is the supercharged XK8. Not super fast 0-60, but 60-90 was a single leap with a tiny press of the big toe. Literally purred at 110 mph. Kind of expensive to maintain. Worth it. Regret selling it but I only had garage space for one car and I needed a daily driver, and the XKR just wasn’t as reliable as I required at the time. Would be perfect right now with the lockdown and I am not having to drive downtown to the office everyday.

The Tibbe key used for Fords was 6 'flats' but the Jaguar Tibbe was more secure with 8 'flats' plus the key itself is RFID encoded to the ignition immobiliser. So very secure for it's day. Geoff Lawson directed the design but other geniuses were also involved in the penning and clay work including Fergus Pollock and Keith Helfet. It was a design 'dream team'.

I have an ‘04 XKR Coupe in Platinum silver and it is an amazing car. I love driving it and it has been very reliable. However, I have not kept it completely stock. My car in stock form has 400 HP and 400 lb-ft of torque. I probably deviate from that about 5 to 10 HP due to a modified exhaust (did it for sound) and an aluminum intake (did that because it was better than buying the stock plastic intake pipe). I plan on next either upgrading the supercharger pulleys or upgrading the blower to a twin screw unit. My goal is to achieve nearly 600 crank HP.

Agreed, the last real Jag made at Browns Lane, before they moved shop and started making everything out of aluminium. That was the beginning of the end. In a way that just shows that this car was a retro throwback even when it was new, but that's why I love my XK8. It feels like a modern version of a classic Jag, with just enough new tech to make you feel safe and comfortable. Whilst the newer cars are very impressive, they are just trying to be like a bland German car, full of black plastic and lacking in any real character.

Never have I read so much hysterical crap since Tony Bliar's weapons of mass-destruction speech. BMWs are for drug-dealers and chavs. A car dealer who sold both marques told me that. I've had seven Jaguars and five of them are still in my outbuildings. Two are currently on the road. All but one have been ultra-reliable. A coil let me down. When I took my '02 XK8 for its MOT both the tester and a customer wanted to buy it. A bloke flagged me down last week to tell me how beautiful the Old Cat looks. They actually are pretty affordable to own, one of these, or and XJ8 for that matter, can comfortably turn in 25 mpg on the motorway with the cruise control set at a sensible speed, and they'll cruise all day like that without any stress on the car or the driver. It would be useful to have a Jaguar specialist who knows these cars well to hand if you own one as they're far from being the easiest cars in the world to work on and a bit of knowledge definitely trumps a lower labour rate as it's very easy to tackle a job on one of these, take a lot of stuff apart and then find you've just got to turn around and put it all back together again as you can't actually access what you wanted to work on like that, something that a knowledgeable specialist would know. Some parts for these, particularly suspension parts, are expensive and they seem to have a taste for air conditioning condensers as they are mounted low down at the front and take a beating, but otherwise good ones seem to be generally pretty reliable. Rust can be an issue on less than good ones, but for the price difference between a tired example and a genuinely nice one, there really isn't any point in buying anything other than a nice one, then sit back, enjoy it and look after it and watch the prices start going up again. XKR prices already are, so these are bound to follow...

7: 23 Valet mode meant the valet couldn't access the boot or glove box, so your valuables would be safe.......the valet could still drive the car around though.

I think the Ford keys you were talking about were the ones they used before they bought the type of key you have.Ford got told by the car insurance companies to fit more secure locks to their vehicles as so many were getting stolen .A lot of Ford owners fitted Chubb locks to their cars at the time.

Nice car love the videos, like somebody has posted the keys are Tibbe with six cuts. If a customer used to bring one of those keys to a dealer, me any many other Ford guys could read those keys and work out the number, of course they still had the chip in them.

Hello, thanks for the test drives. Having owned 2 Alfa Romeos and still owning a 97 XJ, I guess I fall into your Enthusiasts Group. I do have a load of things to add to the XK article but they are aimed more at the 90s Jag. I'm now queued up at the local classic repair shop as the underneath has rusted to pieces ...but I love the car, need I say anymore? Cheers, Paul F.

Min 9:20 re the phone: My XKR convertible (2001 till 2019 and one of the very few cars I really regret selling) had a Motorola phone beneath the armrest which could be used via spreakers as in cars today ... WOW back then! All in all, the XK8 and XKR (X100) are to my mind the sexiest GTs still around and really not that bad to keep if treated well. Apart from timing chain in the XKR no real issues.

A (rather posh) friends dad had one of these. I remember riding 2, possibly 3 up in the back which was ridiculous. I love the styling but it is just such an impractical option. A jag is one of those aspirational things that now seem like a bit of a relic. Not met anyone who has owned a modern one (Ford era and beyond) that doesn't regret it.

Yes, beautifully styled seats, door interior, centre console and dashboard all trimmed in sumptous Connolly leather and Californian burr walnut, both of which were crafted in the Browns Lane trim shop and veneer centre respectively by real pros.

The leather and wood may be of high quality but it's the look of the dashboard, instruments and switchgear which is the thing I like least about the car. It doesn't gel.

There must be a financial dividing line somewhere between buying a much newer, much more economical car for a lot more money, and buying an old but well-kept luxury car for a bargain price, and taking the hit on insurance, fuel and MOT costs. I've no idea where that line is, but my gut feeling is that this XKR might well fall near it. Depending on what mileage you expected to put on it and how long you intended to keep it, I guess. I'd be very tempted indeed!
@furiousdriving
@furiousdriving 4 жыл бұрын
I think mileage is the deciding factor on a car like this, if you won't be using it far daily its a winner, if you do 30k a year it'll bankrupt you!
