Thanks for creating this video. I can almost feel how planted the W140 is on the road at various speeds. My first experience with the W140 was from a back seat of a friend's chauffeur-driven 300SE. I was still about 13-14, but I can remember the serene ride quality and the in-line six engine roaring as the driver accelerated. Several decades later, I now drive a 400E(W124) and have had it for seven years. It's not a S-Class but sharing the same M119 as the S420, it almost feels like a scaled down version of the flagship. It is a challenge to keep maintaining a car of 30 years of age, but I have always enjoyed how it drives. It is a dream to be able to drive it on the autobahn!

Awesome video & awesome car! I had two w140 one of it is same like your s280 ,99 model & another is 95 S320L.. what I can say is that both are different in terms of driving cuz the 5 speed feels much calmer to drive & most of the I will cruise in it.. on the other hand, the s320 with 4 speed transmission feels much direct when driving it & you will always feels the need of driving fast! Only thing is that for me based on my experience with both of it, the s280 with 5 speed are the car for driving around town & cruise all day long. Easier to drive & Park it in town. For the S320 with long wheelbase it is intended to be driving on the highway or long journey rather than driving around town it will drink a lot of gas which I think fuel economy is little bit higher than the other one. Nevertheless it is the best car to drive regardless of 4 speed or 5 speed transmission.👍

The W140 is with no doubt one of the best cars out there despite its age -there are very few cars that can match it in terms of robustness and driving something truly special. The transmission differences are really interesting. I have always found the S280 to feel a bit underpowered and "sluggish" for such a large and heavy car, I'm sure the S320 feels better in this respect. With this being said, the drivetrain is incredibly smooth and it is a great cruiser like you said. It is very likely that the 4-speed transmission yields worse fuel economy - the W140 has never exactly been known to be efficient after all and the smaller displacement engines are no exception to this haha. Even the S280 is quite thirsty and surprisingly has almost the same fuel economy as the S600 V12 based on my tests.

@@Auto_Lore yes it is the s280 feels underpowered & sluggish for a big car like W140, it take some times to get there eventually it will hit the top speed. The 320 are much fun to drive. Yes it is thirsty even with the 5 speed it is quite not economical that I can say ,but when you compare it with the 4 speed it will clearly the 5 speed wins in terms of fuel consumption. Driving feels In my opinion will be the 4 speed cuz you can certainly feels the punch & the the power delivery instant with the 4 speed..the fuel consumption in City drive both quite the same regardless of 4 or 5 speed & it is up to the driver where a person with heavy foot will instantly make the f.consumption going up Hahaha. Anyway I enjoyed watching you vids! Thumbs up.. 👍

Thank you! Based on my own experience, I would estimate the fuel consumption to be around 15 L/100 km (~16 MPG) under normal city driving conditions. Surprisingly, it is not much more fuel efficient than the larger W140 engine options that have significantly more power.

It is rattling even on smooth roads WAY too much. I have been driving a 1998 S320 5-speed in the U.S. for 11+ years, and I have no suck noise on the front end. This also looks like the pre-'97 facelift with the side light on the front fender and missing the tucked-in side panels. Swedish Specs (?) Who knows. I would throw that old phone out the window once you get to highway speeds.

Because when you turn on the lights, you have reduced the capacity of the battery, so the battery will struggle while turning the engine to start. In some parts of countries, where roadtax are expensive s280 were available besides s320.. even the late Princess diana had accident in a S280 w140 which they told that the car were the limousine company for the ritz at the night of the accident being used..

One can think of it as the most economical "entry level" W140, formerly known as the 300 SE in the first two years of production. I find it very fascinating how many engine options were available for the W140 - 5 gasoline and 2 diesel engines!

The S280/S320 feels deceptively slow due to the way they are engineered for comfort and smoothness - like you said, they definitely start moving once you reach higher RPMs.
