Don't feel bad. I can't tell you how many times I've went way far in depth trying to diagnose a misfire/air pump, etc. Sometimes the most obvious solution is the one over looked. No harm in looking at the entire system as a whole and testing/verifying each individual component. This video was a great learning tool for me as it was for everyone else. Keep up the great work!

Eric doesn't use high tech diagnosing tools because he tries to do tests that the average person can do. It isn't practical for the home mechanic to buy expensive equipment. ETCG is designed to save you money. Good video Eric. I've chased my tail many of times and then found the problem was right in front of me.

I have seen a lot of your videos and this has to be one of the best. In particular I like when you explain the strategy and logic of a particular approach before you try something. And then when that does not work, you explain the next logical strategy and approach. A good Sherlock unraveling of what the root cause is that eventually reveals itself. I am way past my youger and foolish years when I would just throw parts in an attempt to secure a fix. The true fun is in an accurate diagnosis
@Cragified11 жыл бұрын
I think this is a very good video to put up Eric because it shows the challenges a technician faces trying to diagnose a problem and all the possibilities they can be. It also illustrates how important it is to look at all possibilities before you start throwing expensive parts at it. A lesser tech would have just installed new injectors and then the customer would eat that without a resolution to their problem.
@Grescht9 жыл бұрын
Eric, I'd like to share with you some things I discovered in my endeavors with this exact same car experiencing the EXACT same problem. I really think it'd be a GREAT addition to this video because the majority of the viewers watching this video are working on high mileage cars versus the lower mileage car featured in this video. After going through regular diagnostics, and replacing the standard tune-up parts, I determined my intake gasket was leaking as well. After a timely job of replacing it as you know, I also replaced both egr valve gaskets (top and bottom) , the egr inlet tube gasket located on cyl 4, and the throttle body gasket. I started her up and it purred like a kitten..... For about 5 mins. Then it went right back to missing at idle. Under load driving was greatly improved but under 2k you could feel the miss and I was not happy. I pretty much went back through the entire diagnostic process trying to eliminate things. Long story short,
@Grescht9 жыл бұрын
When I replaced the intake mani gaskets I did not fully remove either half of the manifold from the car, I just separated them enough to get the job done. What ended up happening was during this process I managed to loosen some carbon somewhere in the egr passages because they were absolutely FULL of it and a chunk of carbon made its way into my egr valve which made it unable to close. This happened five minutes after it started and was running perfect. It had all the symptoms of a vacuum leak. I think you should add a note to the video really stressing the importance of full removal of the manifold so you can do a thorough egr valve and passage cleaning by removing the four access plugs located under each runner. It's impossible to do the cleaning in the car and if you reinstall with new gaskets you are just wasting your time. At any point in the repair you can knock loose some carbon and it can get stuck in an egr passage and BOOM, you're missing again required full removal a second
@Grescht9 жыл бұрын
Second time. I learned this the hard way and after having to do THAT job twice, I wouldn't wish that on any mechanic. CLEAN YOUR EGR AND EGR PASSAGES WHILE THE MANIFOLD IS OFF!!!!! DONT BE LAZY LIKE ME AND NOT PULL THE MANI ALL THE WAY. YOU DONT WANT TO DO THIS JOB TWICE. ^ moral of the story kids Learn from my mistakes and Eric's knowledge. For information on how to clean the egr passages refer to Eric's video where he performs this job on a F22 series Honda motor that's very similar.

Yeah, those Altimas are known for intake gasket leaks! A quick look at fuel trims on the scanner at different throttle openings (during a test drive) is a great way to narrow down the type of misfire. A dirty MAF would give very different trims than an intake air leak. And after the fix, you'll have quantitative evidence that you fixed the issue! To rule out an ignition issue, you could have taken out the #4 plug with the boot, laid it on the block, and ran the engine. Otherwise great job!

@Nobody77205 жыл бұрын
Looks like it's just water droplets vibrating from the engine. Also it's unlikely for the charge to arc from the side of the cap terminal to the side of the plug wire passing through two different insulated points rather than the solid conducted connection beneath. Arcing generally occurs between the wires themselves.

Intake manifold. Did it 2 years ago so I don't remember everything but you gotta: drain fuel lines, drain coolant, remove air filter, throttle body, starter, fuel rail, many hoses and really tough to find bolts, then have fun jimmying out the manifold and collector. There's more, I just can't remember. The dealership pegs it at an 8hr job. There are a couple hundred complaints online from Altima owners with the same problem, vacuum leak #4, lowest quote was 500.
@andrewthompsonuk111 жыл бұрын
This is a good example of the venture effect. Biggest leak when no. 4 sucks. Fuel trims etc may have have not been too bad. Spark wires were marginal. Good to clean the injectors now and then. In all good work.

Also with pinching off the return line. You boosted your fuel going into the cylinder, which eliminated the misfire because you ended up with more fuel + more air in that cylinder. You essentially had a lean misfire in cyl. #4, and boosting fuel pressure just helped to righen up the mixture.

Hi. I've got an unmodified 1998 Nissan Pathfinder, 164,000 miles, 3.3L V6, 5 speed automatic transmission. Owned by an elderly couple...treated well. Runs smoothly. 10w-30 oil/filter is new and full. Same with transmission fluid. When it's first started it knocks or loudly rattles for 3 seconds. Then it stops. Once warm it will only do the startup rattle about 50% of the time. Exact same noise returns from about 1,800 to 3,200 RPM and then stops. Also, the noise quiets and sometimes disappears between 1,800 - 3,200 RPM if I let off of the accelerator and coast. It also will not do it sometimes if I'm going up a steep hill slowly with the RPMs are in that midrange, under the hill's load. The noise increases in speed and loudness with increasing RPMs. It sounds like 1 or maybe 2 cylinders of the 6, to me. The main bearings and rod bearings were changed. Looked good, some rod bearing wear on a couple but not serious. No rod or crank shaft slop was noted before or after replacement. Made no difference in the noise. The crank was NOT sanded/polished. It throws a P1400 code for EGRC Solenoid Valve error. I don't notice any idling or power issues though. It returns within a few minutes after clearing the code. Could this cause a knocking noise at certain times like I have? It runs smooth cold and hot. I've narrowed it down to 5 things based on its part time occurrence: 1. Flex plate? 2. Timing belt tensioner failing (unknown when last changed)? 3. Torque converter? 4. Hydraulic lifters? 5. EGRC Solenoid Valve? I have two short videos I recorded it and can share if you want to hear it. Thanks!

My approach to this after seeing the tune up partly improving the rough running, I would resistance check the injectors, then swap 2 injectors around to see if the issue follows that injector. If no change, I would suspect vacuum leaks. When you pinched off the return line, thus sending FULL fuel pressure to the injectors, you could be dealing with a fuel pressure loss which is simple to verify.... however, by sending maximum pressure to the rail and injectors, if the computer does not shorten injector pulse time accordingly, a larger volume of fuel will be injected, which helps compensate for the vacuum leak which makes it run too lean.
@JeremyredlinuxRoberts7 жыл бұрын
I wish I would found this video back when it was first posted. I had a 94 altima with the same engine. As soon as I read misfire in the title I could have told you where it was and how to fix it. The #4 plug wire blows out the side and arcs on the wall, sometimes it will only miss under load because of the lower spark. The best thing to do for these engines is put a roll of good electrical tape in the glove box or the console and use it to wrap up the plug wire until you can get a new set. The brand or quality of wire doesn't seem to matter either, all will only last a year maybe 2 if your lucky.
@TheCoatneyadkins7 жыл бұрын
you know it's funny you say that Cuz with my altima (not same year but same engine) the #4 contact inside the dis. cap on mine is where it would always misfire, the plastic around the contact actually got so hot it kinda melted a little bit and the contact was leaning back and twisted and all distorted. lol ended up just replacing the whole distributor cuz I broke the shield that covers the cam sensor and pickup n all that..... the new distributor worked....I had no idea the number four ignition miss was common on the ka24 engines. good to know though

Hey Eric, the best injector testing method I've seen it an injector balance tester. Just connect a fuel pressure gauge, prime the fuel system up to max by turning ignition on a few times and connect the balance tester to the injector. The tester is plugged onto the terminals of the injector and can pulse it 10, 20, 50 or 100 times. Looking at the fuel pressure after you can do a comparative check- 1-2 psi difference would be bad injector

Hey Eric. I gotta say, I'm a fresh out of college technician working at a Chevy dealer and I've encountered this exact same problem before. But let me just say this. Your scanner is capable of reading live engine data, correct? You should have looked at fuel trim before you even stood up out of the driver's seat. You would have had a clear battle plan right away. A lean running condition, with a MAF code and a misfire screams vacuum leak before you even open the hood. Thanks for the videos!

I just bought a car, 2004 civic, only has 83,000KM on it as I’m in Canada. Anyways I had to bring it back to the dealership as there was knocking in the front when going over bumps. I took the wheels off myself and found the stabilizer links were rusty and bushings cracking and breaking apart, which in my opinion, if they did a “155 point inspection” should’ve been noticed and replaced. So they fixed it for free the front and rear links, and also an alignment as when the wheel is straight it veers to the right pretty hard. The knocking is still there while going over bumps but i do notice the difference from the new links. It still pulls hard right when wheel is straight, and now when I start driving in the morning after it has heated up slightly, when I come to a stop the engine kind of stutters and vibrates/shakes the car. I’m thinking it could maybe be a misfire, but when we went to test drive it, I pulled the oil dipstick and they had overfilled the oil majorly.. I’m talking like at least 3 inches over the 2nd fill hole (full mark). Does anyone know if the symptoms I described could possibly be from the oil being that overfilled and it being test driven by others like that, if there’s is air bubbles that got into the crankcase and around the pistons? I’m not a mechanic but I do a lot of work on my cars, just haven’t done major internal repairs or diagnostics. Any help would greatly be appreciated, as the car is pretty much brand new kilometre wise, and I don’t feel it should have these issues unless the dealership guys knew something was wrong and they lied anyway.

I've worked with these motors quite often and knock sensors tend to be fairly common on these engines. So more than likely, that will need to be replaced in the near future. It's rather common on older Nissan/Infiniti's...

i have 95 f150 5.0 and i have a miss fire at idle as well. i have replaced all ignition (wires, control box, plugs, distributor cap and button, coil), checked for vacuum leaks and cant find anything, i have also taken the intake plenum and throttle body off and cleaned them as well as replaced the gasket along with cleaning the iac valve. i did have a wet spark plug with gas so i replaced the injector(fixed the wet plug). Fuel pressure is good as well as the Fuel pressure regulator.

Enjoyed this video. Can there be a misfire in cylinder #1 if there is a vacuum leak by throttle body? Thanks so much for your response.

good video, although you went about the misfire the hard way. I always first look at fuel trim to check for problems first. fuel trim can determine a vacum leak. Also second in order would have been a compression test. I would of recomended the wires and cap though. both looked to be a potential problem.
