What some people might not remember, that it was Darren McCarty's spectacular pirouette goal that actually won the Stanley Cup. The second goal of this game ended up being the game-winner. Anytime anyone sees Darren McCarty in public, you should definitely say there goes that man that scored the Stanley cup-winning goal

You beat me to it. All fans of the Detroit Red Wings should be giving thanks for that man. If it wasn't for his intervention we could be sitting at 62 years without a Cup. Every Wings fan needs to remember or be told if they're young that management nearly traded Stevie Y to Ottawa in 1996 and the deal was done, only Mr. I's intervention vetoed the deal at the last minute.

@NYFanatic6 жыл бұрын
Bob Meyer I think the Wings would still have won one of those two cups from the late 90s, but not the 2002 cup had that acquisition for Alexei Yashin occured. Yashin coming to the Wings would make him change for the better because he would have to be mentored by his fellow Russian teammates Konstantinov, Federov, Fetisov, Larionov and Kozlov. Yashin would be kept in line and he would not hold out Detroit like he did with Ottawa. That also means that a few years later the NY Islanders don’t pursue Alexei Yashin by giving up Zdeno Chara and the 1st round pick that turns into Jason Spezza.
@bobmeyer8546 жыл бұрын
Sorry but I completely disagree with that. Yashin wasn't half the player Yzerman was. He also was no leader. The legendary Stevie Y speech after Game 4 against St. Louis might well have been the difference between them flaming out in the first round and winning the Cup. Who would have been the captain if Yzerman was traded? Also the Shanahan deal likely never happens if Yzerman is dealt because the rationale was to let Fedorov and Primeau take over down the middle after the deal. The Murphy deal probably doesn't happen either since Coffey wouldn't have been dealt. It boils down to this: Which package is more valuable to the late 90s Wings? 31 yr old Yzerman, 28 yr old Shanahan, and 35 yr old Murphy or 25 yr old Primeau, 23 yr old Yashin, and 35 yr old Coffey. The answer is the former. Those cups do not happen if that trade goes through.

All four of the Red Wings' Cups from 97-08 were great, but 97 was the most magical for me. For one thing, they broke a 42-year drought. For another, this was the first time I remember a team from Michigan winning a championship. (I was too young to remember the Pistons in 89 and 90.) I had seen teams from elsewhere win championships in various sports - the Yankees, Packers, Bulls, Cowboys, etc. But for it to happen with my Red Wings was just extra special. I still have some of the newspaper articles from back then.

One of the great memories of my life. That's wings team may have been the greatest. And Scotty Bowman the greatest coach of all sports. But the wings need to get back on the ball. They got a pass because as I've said always,when you win championships with a few years,unlike the Lions still waiting a lifetime,you have earned it. But missing the playoffs for two straight years,in the NHL is inexusable. For Hockey town it's heresy. The Wings made a big mistake when Holland stayed and Bowman left instead of letting his son take over as GM. Instead they went to Chicago and of course,more Stanly cups while we went back down to the cellar. Holland should have been fired last year when he said team wasn't a contender. Who does that as a gm? Well,the wings naturally played to his expectations,and after making playoffs 25 straight years,have missed them since. Hopefully,the kids of Mike will do what's neccessary and like their dad,make hockey town proud once more. You can't win championships every year,but a contender always.
@incrediblesulk5555 жыл бұрын
Freed Belak stop with the nonsense. Holland built these championship teams. Your comments are ridiculous. So try and make the playoffs every year? What 25 in a row wasn’t enough? How many times did Pittsburgh miss the playoffs,or how about Chicago? Come on man, pretty tough to keep a championship caliber team like they did by picking low in the first round every year.
